I definitely have my preferred choice of the winner in Hebron tonight, the musicality is just simply off the charts, my fav sections being the low brass all day every day with just how they were able to bring out this dark sound even further from Hebron that we don’t usually hear them have a full musical program of. For FloMo I will definitely say their opener is fantastic, I very much love the presentation of the whimsy and oddities that the show has to offer, along with the amazingly talented soloists they posses at the start. Their woodwinds are incredible, so much to enjoy about their show, but to me, nothing beats just how locked in Hebron was in tackling that repertoire and leaving me flabbergasted? FloMo’s has lots of heart and is so well-produced I’m very much hoping they contend at Grand Nats?? but I’m hoping Hebron wins tonight!3 points -

I feel like if Pearland is in the conversation for finals, Cypress Woods probably should be, too. I guess scores were a bit lower at Lone Star than expected. I was going to say maybe Klein Oak as well, but they seemed to fade a bit this weekend. That being said, I don't 100% trust the results of independent contests. Seven Lakes also seems to be having a great year, but there are a lot of great bands at this contest.2 points -
What a day! So much great stuff to see. Shows I loved, in particular: Highland Park, Wylie, Summit and Richland. Duncanville is so visually impactful - really enjoyed them too. Quite the day for band in DFW!2 points

Yeah. But an improved performance can shake things up, especially at contests using the UIL sheets. Looking at the recaps, Summit was strong musically (getting first from the music ensemble judge), although percussion wasn't quite as strong (although the good news is that I don't think percussion is judged separately at area). Two weeks to get it as clean as possible for area.2 points -

Has to switch to multi cam for Flo Mo, but I’m honestly not mad because this show is SO GOOD!! I was hoping for a more fun Flower Mound show this season, and they are delivering!!! The guard is insanely good. Maybe it’s just me but I feel like Flo Mo struggles with ending their shows, like I wish the final moment was as impactful and creative as the other amazing moments in the show. That performance is gonna be hard to beat though. Maybe my favorite show this season (close with TWHS and Hebron.)2 points -

I'm somewhat surprised about Duncanville, although, as with many other programs this year, their situation could perhaps be easily explained by the effects of the pandemic. Also, The Colony's absence from finals is notable, even if this is consistent with their bottom-of-finals finish at HEB finals this year and their early-ish performance time today. My guess is that they are the first out. I'm most surprised by Summit's lower placement, though, given their BOA Midland placement last week. Of course, Midland was not an incredibly deep contest, and this is not BOA scoring. Additionally, Summit had an early slot today, although that is not by itself a strong explanation in this context. Highland Park seems to be securing their program's upward trajectory. Since they were not in contest with Wylie for captions in prelims, it is difficult to say how close or far the two are. Movement in finals will be interesting. I think Summit is most likely to move up, and Highland Park most likely to not move down (apart from Lewisville).2 points

2021 BOA San Antonio Super Regional (Nov. 5 & 6)
gregorydf01 reacted to natertater21000 for a topic
We have now entered the long quiet before the storm in Texas as far as BOA is concerned. Nothing but UIL and weeks of cleaning for all the bands before the big show. So with all of the major BOA Texas regionals complete, here is where I personally see the groups going into the SA super. I'll be grouping the bands into unordered tiers rather than ranking them individually (too far out to do so in my opinion) The top 5 Vandegrift: The cleanliness and precision of their program and overall performance is currently unmatched. They are the band to beat and I am currently unsure of whether or not I see another band doing it. Love the show inside and out, can't wait to see it live. Reagan: My personal favorite design of the year. The show flows from one idea to the next effortlessly and they are performing it incredibly well. How they continue to clean musically is what will determine whether they can overtake Vandegrift. Both are playing excellently, it'll just come down to who is more excellent as it so often does. I absolutely LOVE the drill. The Woodlands: The most unorthodox design of the top groups, although not as out of the box as it would've been 5-6 years ago. This show has an incredible amount of potential and I'm mostly interested in seeing which side of the design coin the judges end up preferring at the end of the season. While I can understand some people having reservations about the uniform, I think it fits the overall aesthetic of the show very well. Everything on the field really pops and it's so fun to watch. Claudia Taylor Johnson: This show is classic CTJ. It's an explosive crowd favorite show and I really enjoy it. As is usually the case they are performing difficult choreography at a high level throughout the show which is my favorite CTJ-ism. The dueling soloists being a centerpiece for the show is an interesting idea. I hope they will be able to find a way to avoid the electronic issues that have been happening. Hebron: Musically this is my favorite show from them since "Sculpt". I am constantly in awe of how well they play. The technicality, clarity, and expressiveness in their sound is truly incredible. If they are able to clean up visually to the level of the other top 5 groups and add some visual GE elements they'll push up into the medal range. Threats to the top 5 Cedar Park: The new design is exactly the right amount of modern design philosophy mixed with classic CP style and I absolutely love it. I really enjoy the arrangements of modern pop fused with classics from CP's past, and the drill is very satisfying to watch. I think they may just be a lock for top half of SA finals if this upward trajectory continues. Vista Ridge: This one will be very interesting. I really enjoy the show (anyone who plays Barber's first symphony well gets two thumbs up from me). Still not completely sold on the Katy Perry elements but I'm thinking they'll make more sense when the show is complete. The show is very demanding but I think they'll pull it off. 8-14- These placements at SA are going to be extremely competitive. I'd go more in depth with each group but this post already feels like an essay so i'll keep it brief. In no particular order Marcus, Cedar Ridge, Leander, Rouse, Keller, Coppel, Bowie. Just out but could easily get into finals. L.D. Bell, Round Rock, Westwood, Westlake, Wakeland. I always feel like I'm forgetting someone when I try to make a post like this. So many fantastic bands, Music is alive and well in Texas!1 point -

Their first performance at Dayton was really strong, and that was almost a month ago, so I'm assuming they've stayed on the same trajectory since then. I wouldn't pick them as winning the Eagle but they're still up there. I agree that there's even more shows that are deserving of the title. I really enjoy Avon's show with their music selections, and CTJ's is probably my favorite production of the year. There's just so many bands this year that are capable of winning it all.1 point -

Here's my take on what happened (congrats to everyone) 1. FloMo: deserved and everyone saw it coming (congrats on the 3-peat, just don't choke late season). was so surprised to see more of the show and MAN. THIS IS GONNA BE AMAZING AT NATS 2. Hebron: music was a given, didn't get to watch it but i'd assume it was great. (as reflected with scores) area c will be a tough one [on a random note: i was in the lot with ld bell as hebron was on the field. LET ME TELL YOU THEY WERE SO LOUD AND I COULD AUDIBLY HEAR THE ARTICULATION FROM THE LOT. THAT WAS JUST SPECTACULAR] 3. Marcus: that horn player was legendary. and LOUD MARCUS? HUH? AND THEN THE VISUAL CLEANLINESS HOLY 4. Keller: they clearly stepped up since heb. a lot of improvement has definitely paid off. 5. Coppell: interesting show idea. cool mandies/vista prop; though, it's implementation in the show could be better 6. L.D. Bell: they just need to clean more and get their closer on the field. had they did, i would've had them much higher but great job to the kids. [also, finals run was much better than prelims according to the kids. leave it up to the performers to say about it.] there's a lot of room for improvement for this group and hopefully, it will pay off by area 7. Wakeland: boa judging WTF. 8. Carroll: man. rip music scores. but i still love them either way 9. Timber Creek: man. same thing with carroll but the visuals... man. 10. Lone Star: boa judging WTF part 2. also rip music scores (deserved higher imo) 11. Forney: great performance! and also shoutout to micah [the wheelchair trumpet player] and tomoki [the blind flute player] 12. Aledo: boa judging WTF part 3.1 point

BOA looks at music and marching but places a big emphasis in the overall show…it’s classified as general effect. The “acting”, the props, the flags are a major part of the judging. UIL is purely marching and music. Judges don’t evaluate the show itself. It’s only how well you march and play the music as a band and individually.1 point -
Taft actually did pretty well this week. They might end up higher than expected come area time. Still a lot to improve, but I think area finals are firmly within reach. That being said, I'm still convinced that Stevens is in the race for that last state spot between LT and Brandeis. Stevens tends to peak pretty late, but when they peak, they peak.1 point

Flower Mound's closer really wraps everything up. The GE in this show is off the charts, there's just so much to look at and take in. Each and every one of the performers on the field from the front ensemble to the choir group at the front are so immersed in the performance that it really draws you in to the world of Seuss! I was a bit hesitant when I first saw this show in the Marcus football game video but now that they have what appears to be the entire show on the field it really does all come together very nicely. This will be a great production at Grand Nationals!1 point -
Coppell has some top tier woodwinds. The runs they did in the closer were executed masterfully! The ballad is turning into one of my favorites of the season, from the guard and two dancers in the center to the big hit with Humoresque near the end. Great show, and one that I think may be good enough for a medal at St. Louis in a couple weeks.1 point

These results don't surprise me that much. Hebron is fantastic musically, but the show is a little safe from a design standpoint. Flower Mound is taking more risks for sure. I don't know if I like all of those risks, but they should be rewarded for them. FM's show also gives you those MOMENTS. That being said, given how awesome Hebron sounds, I could see that translating into music GE, so we could see some changes later tonight. I don't think there's a massive gulf between the two bands, personally.1 point -
