    UIL Area B 6A 2021

This right here. Saying that it's preordained does a disservice to the hard work that students in every program put in day after day. It's true that the top 4-6 bands in the metroplex hasn't changed much in the last 8 years or so, but that's because those same 4-6 bands have also gotten BETTER. FloMo, Hebron, Marcus, Keller, Coppell etc. today are WAY better than FloMo, Hebron, Marcus, Keller, Coppell, etc. from 10 years ago. To catch them, a program has to make a huge leap. Waxahachie and Prosper are great examples. Both were smaller 5A bands not too long ago, and with hard work and great community support they made the big leap and have been SMC Finalists and GN Finalists respectively. It can be done!

Yup, Saturday is what matters. Every band has been working to fix all the little things (and, in some cases, big things). It's all about execution now, and those who have worked on the right things and put in the work will likely have a good day on Saturday. Best of luck to all!

  10. Not to take anything away from Summit, but a majority of bands did not have a competitive season last year due to covid, and I believe Legacy’s numbers have suffered as well. However, Legacy jumped from 8th to 4th at POC, as well as jumped 4th to 2nd at their midlothian competition. I’m also a newbie to this marching band forum (joined a few days ago), but rising FOUR spots from prelims to finals seems like a large leap. I’m 100% sure that this is legacy’s best year since 2009 when they last made state. They placed 9th at area finals in 2019, and are much improved since then. I would say Legacy is here to give Summit some good, fun competition for years to come. All that being said, I will be rooting for Summit on Saturday and good luck to Legacy as well as the rest of the area F bands.

  12. I also agree. Being a summit alumni, I do have hope for them as they are doing extremely well this season. However, I feel Legacy’s show is stronger musically and has a better overall effect. Given that both bands have placed high at all competitions, and Legacy beat them at POC, I’m excited to see them compete head to head once more. Many people in this forum have been predicting summit to place top 3 at area finals, but I have yet to see evidence of why they are so confident. This area is cutthroat and several bands will be out for blood. Good luck to all the bands competing!

  16. Edited the original post, there is now a link to a second spreadsheet (https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1Zr5UfrRdfXCtw2f-DVBWbim6uTtCnG4zwFev_9MNdwU/edit?usp=sharing) which has the programs organized into their Areas and shows the maximum possible number of state spots. The bands with an asterisk by their name are bands that will qualify for Area regardless of how they score, more will be added if regions don't reach the minimum of 2 bands per class advancing.

  17. BOA DFW was 4 days ago. Aledo was definitely cleaner and had a better run than Centennial on Saturday. It reminds of 2 years ago when Aledo was much cleaner early in the season than Centennial and placed higher at BOA DFW and BOA Waco. Colleyville Heritage was also finishing ahead. Centennial is really good at making adjustments during the season and incorporating suggested changes from judges. Now that's not to say it's going to happen the same way again this year. Aledo is really good and is the favorite, in my mind, for Area. Then we add the curveball of Richland and Summit back in 5A. Outside of Aledo being the favorite, I think it's nuts to predict the other 3 state qualifiers yet. There are too many variables and so much work being done every day with these programs. Also, I'm pretty sure no one has seen all the contenders in this group and are just going off what they've read in other comments. They've been in different contests with different levels of competition and judging variables and not all have videos that are findable. I think we can make some educated guesses on the finalists, but Finals is going to be a dogfight. Lastly....where we can submit a petition to the UIL to ban band directors from choosing "Pure Imagination" in their shows? ?

  18. You should see the football, too! Slightly off topic, but if anyone is looking for a neutral game to go to, Colleyville Heritage and Summit square off at Mustang-Panther Stadium on Friday night to essentially decide the district title. Should be a great game and halftime. Wish I could make it up there.

  21. their first trip was in 2011 and made finals in their 4th year of opening. after that I believe it was felt that we should stay in Texas and work on taking on the Texas schools and getting some wins at BOA and build their brand. 2014 wins in Conroe and San Antonio led to plans to attend Indy in 2016. 2017 was an undefeated season with wins in Austin, Midland and San Antonio and led to the plans for the 2019 trip to Indy. going this year puts them on the same cycle as TWHS and Round Rock. With the creation of out Bands of CTJ Foundation, it is our hope that we can support trips like Grand Nats and reduce the cost to ensure that every child has the ability to attend. this year our foundation has supported the Grand Nats trip for CTJ as well as support one of our cluster middle schools for their trip to Midwest Clinic in December and some new instruments for our other middle school. the goals of the foundation is to support the entire cluster. as many have noted, the cost of the trip is a major reason why so many schools limit their trips to Indy. I am hopeful that they stick to the every other year schedule but that ultimately will be a district decision as well as any desires for additional out of state trips. I don't know that they will ever do Macy's Parade but I believe there is a desire to make a return trip to the Rose parade. fingers crossed.

  23. Wandered over to Music for All and got the judging panels for this event. Prelims Panel A: Ryan Brittain (howdy, Westfield alum and amazing horn player!), Dave Carbone, Glenn Fugett, W. Dale Warren, Ken Giese, John Howell, and Michael Turner. Prelims Panel B: John Alstrin, George Boulden, Nola Jones, Gregg Williams, Lee Carlson, Robert Solomon, and Jim Sturgeon. Semis Panel: Mike Howard, Jay Kennedy, Chester Phillips, Ken Turner, Curtis Costanza, Marie Czapinski, and Tim Ochran. Finals Panel: George Boulden, Glenn Fugett, Nola Jones, Greg Williams, John Howell, Jim Sturgeon, and Michael Turner. No major red flag judges for me, at least when comparing things to my tastes. Well, maybe a couple of slight ones on the semis panel, but hopefully any quirkiness is balanced out. Semis will already be the most nail-biting contest this year. If I had to guess finals assignments, I'd say Nola Jones and Glenn Fugett on Music GE, George Boulden and Greg Williams on Music Performance, Michael Turner on Individual Visual, Jim Sturgeon on Ensemble Visual, and John Howell on Visual GE. But maybe BOA will change it up a little.

Correct!!!! I had to do some digging around since 12 Area Participants usually means that there is no Finals contest. However, because of several programs opting to do the Military track instead of Open Class, those Div 1 rating at Region still count! Bad judge rule. Someone would have to dig up the exact ordinals but essentially Leander was ranked 3rd by two music judges and 3rd by 1 visual judge so they qualified to state based on this fact alone. Any band that gets a 3rd or higher from two music judges and one visual judge also qualifies to state and Leander fit that criteria. Leander finished 1 point below Westlake, so they didn’t tie but Leander still advanced.

  30. Based on the results from the Birdville contest, I'm revising my prediction slightly. Still going with Heritage and Summit advancing but the battle is for those two final spots with some really deserving bands missing out. I don't think Richland is a lock any more. Azle's result at Birdville was really impressive and they're goooood. And Aledo being right there with Azle and winning the music caption bodes well for them. Richland needs to work on their closer this week but that show is high energy and impressive. If you pin me down now, these are the schools fighting it out for the last two spots. Azle Aledo Richland Burleson Centennial My concern about Azle is that performance time...being the first band to perform can be tough. Best of luck to all!!

  32. Got the chance to see Flower Mound in person last night. From what I saw, I think they have a bit more planned for the vocal soloists from the tuba feature. I hadn’t noticed it before (possibly due to only seeing videos until now) but that group of five or so marchers spend the rest of the show without instruments. They still have their own drill and choreography though. In general they’re sounding pretty good, /very/ loud.

  33. I'm here at the event. Will send periodic updates. I warn that I am not particularly good at evaluating performances in real time. ? The first exhibition band was Argyle, who won 4A Iin prelims. They sound fairly good at times, but they're a bit of a mess visually right now. Then Richland performed in exhibition. Their show is haunting but beautiful, and I was happily surprised with the package as a whole. They're pretty small -- about the size of Argyle -- but they're performing pretty well. I think they have a good shot at being middle of the pack in Area F finals. They clearly need to clean their closer though. And their first trumpets need to play in the ensemble, not just in tune. ? Burleson had a fun bee themed show. They're sounded rougher than Argyle and Richland, but had some good music ensemble moments. They performed at a level above Argyle and just a bit below Richland. The guard was fairly good. Midlothian's show was ballet themed with a gem motif. They wore tux uniforms! They performed weaker than Burleson tonight, though I think some of this comes from show design weakness. Brewer performed just below the level of Midlothian. They had a patriotic themed show. I missed the name of Burleson Centennial's show, but visually it's themed graffiti on brick. They have several large props like this which some of the kids go on top of. They have a lot of stage presence tonight! I feel pretty comfortable placing them above Richland. Their show feels state-worthy, but they need to make it through Area F. Great show!

  37. The Crowley band programs have sadly taken a serious down turn over the last 5 or so years. I remember when I was in high school in the 80's and 90's they were a massive powerhouse. That band could PLAY! However, splitting North to CHS proper really changed things. Both schools have great directors, but I fear the district isn't willing to support the programs like they used to. North Crowley was a state level band not too long ago, but the fall came too fast. I am not sure why both of those high school programs have slipped over the years, but I hope they improve.

    UIL 6A Area I 2021

The maximum number of bands that can qualify for state in this area is 6, but that would require for all bands (32 in total) to get a 1 at region. If three bands do not qualify for area, then Area I will only advance 5 bands (which is the likely outcome). With that being said, I think this area will be extremely competitive with Seven Lakes basically having a guaranteed spot while Cy Woods also having a really good chance with how their season is going at the moment. To add to that, the most interesting part (in my opinion) is seeing who ends up advancing out of so many highly qualified bands (ex: Seven Lakes, Cy Fair, Cy Woods, Tompkins, JET, Bridgeland, Cinco Ranch, and the list goes on...). Seven Lakes and Cy Woods have had really impressive results with Cy Fair and JET having neat finalist appearances in boa Conroe/West Houston. However, I wouldn’t count out bands such as Tompkins, Bridgeland, and Cinco Ranch from the conversation since there is still a bit more time of growth before Area begins. For instance, I know bands like Bridgeland tend to peak really late and I think with how their show is built, they can end up earning a lot of credit if they manage to execute their show at a high level. To conclude, I am really excited to see how everything turns out that day, and for anyone that is performing, best of luck and have fun!

  40. So as of this moment, this is my prediction for finals (in no particular order): Summit Azle Aledo Birdville Burleson Centennial Colleyville Heritage Legacy Midlothian Richland Granbury And then to be honest, I really think you can make a legitimate argument for any one of these 10 groups to grab a state spot. Every group is going to have to have their best absolute best run of the season in order to have a shot at advancing (which I know is a given, but even more so with this area). I honestly don't think you can lock anyone band into a state slot just yet. To me, this feels like a super wide open area because of how evenly matched everyone is. Can not wait for Oct. 23 to roll around.

  45. It's done for balancing cause if you had Vandegrift, Vista Ridge, Lake Travis, and Westlake and in the same area as Round Rock, Westwood, Cedar Ridge, and James Bowie, you'd have potential state finalists not even making state. They're split up to ensure that all of the best bands are making it to state.

  46. Just as a sampling on the location aspect of Grand Nationals let's reverse this and look at when Avon came to Texas. They received 4th place at BOA San Antonio in 2017. 2006 is the last time they did not medal at Grand Nationals. Avon goes every year to Grand Nationals and is very used to going. They are used to performing in the stadium and all the other factors that go with a basic home field advantage. This is a factor, but as some Texas bands like Vandy have shown it is not insurmountable. It is harder for the Texas Bands having to travel further to a less familiar environment and less practice time. Just makes me more proud of the accomplishments of the Texas Bands!
