UIL 6A 2023 State Marching Band Contest (Oct. 30. & 31)

Box 5 has issues with what seems to be server overload, but the content when available is well done.  The audio usually is balanced decently and they know how to film marching band.  NFHS just have no idea what they are doing.  I've seen them ignore the sections that are in the middle of a feature to zoom in on a section of students that aren't playing or moving at all.  I've even seen them zoom in on the drum majors.  I recall there being big issues with audio quality too but I might be making that up.  I just know that they don't really know what they are doing when it comes to marching band.

I think Flo has gotten better based on the quality of the DCI recordings. In the past, I felt that Box5’s were better with their visual and audio quality than Flo. Box5 looked clearer, more vibrant, and sounded clearer as well. 
 

I remember someone last year saying that NFHS’s audio quality sounded like the performers were backfield all the time and I see what they mean. And there were issues with the color saturation (e.g. blues looking like purples or vice versa, I think). As well as ill-timed camera panning and zooming.

For me personally, I had almost no issues with Flo these past two dci seasons. Of course it wasn’t always perfect, but post Covid they’ve done much better, wouldn’t mind if they went back to doing boa/UIL, anything is better than NFHS

Surprised Murphy allows so many videos to be posted. Seems like he always yanked down Burleson Centennial ones. Can't even find any of the 2019 videos from the state finals year.

Any thoughts on Vandegrift's show (it's on youtube) this year? I am in love. They're taking a different tack than what you typically see. The tone and mood is dark, mostly quiet, introspective. Quiet rain instead of rainbows and flowers. Impeccably executed.

For me personally it lacks in the design and over all general effect aspect because of it but the kiddos are still putting on an amazing performance and showing us that they mean business

I personally cannot wait for all the amazing performances ahead of us! I think it will be a very close competition, and we will probably see some surprises along the way. Go Texas bands!!

Cy-Fair was only 1 point behind them at Area based on a music judge difference. So here's to hoping you're spot on and Cypress Fairbanks gets two bands in Finals!  That would be a huge accomplishment for the district!

Don’t sleep on Cypress Woods. They came out on top for Area I at both State and BOA SA last year despite the others beating them at Area. If they have an “on” day, they are fire. They are playing very difficult music very well. They beat Fair in prelims at Area this year (admittedly their finals run was not as good as their prelims run).

Ha! Yes, this comes from the merger of two smaller districts in the 1930s, and for many years Cy-Fair was the only high school until the area had a major growth explosion, and now there are 12.
