Carmel is always one of my favorites when it comes to visual design. The drill, the guard, the way they use the whole field, etc. There are a couple large bands where it feels crowded on the field a lot but Carmel always has great variety when it comes to field coverage. packwick Posted October 7, 2022 Posted October 7, 2022 i mean Gaines is practically the da Vinci of drill. this is him in his element, intricate and near perfect craftsmanship. Avon and BA gonna need to bring out the big gunsss. music is cool too. subtly plays w/ the Barber. if u don't know it well u could miss it. of course they know we know it well. Rubisco 1 Quote

peshbandkid Posted October 7, 2022 Posted October 7, 2022 I recently saw footage from Carmel and I’m distraught. I don’t think I’ve seen such involved drill with strong musical performance. By the time they get to Grand Nationals, I’m not sure if there will be a challenger  packwick and BaritoneBallah 2 Quote

slowbrass Posted October 7, 2022 Posted October 7, 2022 Carmel looks nice but it’s nothing too crazy for them imo. I think Blue Springs might be a sleeper for visual because their movement is incredible. Carmel’s music on the other hand, is some of the best I’ve heard. peshbandkid 1 Quote

Ha. I know it's tongue-in-cheek, but there is a kernel of truth here. This is a top-shelf visual program from Carmel. It's shaping up to be every bit as compelling as their 2016-2018 National Championship shows. Gaines really knows how to create a beautiful, intricate picture on the field -- along with finding fresh and musical transitions between those pictures. It's honestly almost a dead art at this point. The set design and concept are a bit simple, however, and it makes me wonder if the judges might go for something more extravagant. The music is familiar, but done in a fresh enough way. The phrases are nicely shaped, expressive, subtly dynamic, and the control during the tempo changes is impressive. Combined with the visual, it makes for some high elegance indeed. In other words, it's pure Carmel. Do I think they'll win Nationals? I don't know. Avon and Broken Arrow are both capable of beating Carmel at their best, with I think much lesser chances from bands like Tarpon Springs, Blue Springs, and William Mason. But Carmel has certainly thrown down the gauntlet. packwick 1 Quote

Dallas Hobbs Posted October 19, 2022 Posted October 19, 2022 Does anyone know how the number of bands chosen to advance to semifinals is determined? Every year I see a different number like 34, 38, or 37 bands in semifinals but I never know how they came up with that quantity. Quote

Then the next 8 overall move on, regardless of class.  After those 30 are determined, if there are not 2 from each class from each panel advancing, additional bands advance to fill out that representation.  Toasted Almond and Dallas Hobbs 2 Quote

Tubalord11 Posted October 19, 2022 Posted October 19, 2022 So how is everyone feeling of our tx bands right now? I personally think of the 4, prosper is the strongest, and has a great chance of top half of finals. Johnson seems to be doing good as well, with a solid win at midland. Carrol made a good redemption this past weekend at boa prosper, and Hendrickson had made finals at all their contest, but haven’t broken into the 80’s, but hopefully a most likely win at their area this weekend can be a good confidence boost for them. I’d love to hear y’all’s thoughts as we get closer to nats! GeekBoy54 and BaritoneBallah 2 Quote

I’d love to hear y’all’s thoughts as we get closer to nats! Haven't seen full videos of Prosper or MG Johnson yet, but the snippets I saw and the scores they got set themselves up very well for Indy in a few weeks. I think both have a chance of bottom half of finals. For Carroll, they will be in semis but I don't see them in finals. Design/GE is going to hold them back I'm afraid. As for Hendrickson: they have a great show and will solidly be in semis, but from a music execution/pacing and GE standpoint and seeing the other names on the list of who's going to Nats this year, I don't have them in finals. Dependent on how they do in Waco and San Antonio, that may change so I'm not counting them out yet. BaritoneBallah 1 Quote
Popular Post AlphaOmega Posted October 19, 2022 Popular Post Posted October 19, 2022 Hello, everyone! It's that time of year again. Grand Nats is creeping up! Having gone three times, twice as a marcher, I want to give y'all a brief packing list for marchers and some advice. Bring the Following Everything you need to perform Toiletries (oral care, hair care, contact lens stuff, etc) A thicker jacket (not a winter coat. It's gonna be cold, but you're not in Antarctica). I'd also bring a beanie and maybe some warm gloves. A duffle bag or backpack to take to the Indiana Convention Center If your band is going to rehearse at the ICC, bring your rehearsal gear $50-$100 in cash, or have that on a debit card. I recommend wearing leggings under the uniform (guys too) and put thick socks OVER them. Band directors, some of y'all are sticklers for under the uniform gear, but remember, it's cold. The walk from ICC to Lucas Oil is not pleasant. Extra food. Your metabolism will be through the roof. You'll always be hungry. If your hotel room has a microwave, bring popcorn and fall asleep watching a bad comedy! Phone, charger, portable charger Hand warmers DEODORANT! Shampoo Things Performers Do NOT need to bring Shower stuff other than shampoo. You will barely have time to shower. The only thing you need to do is wash your hair. School stuff. You won't have time or wifi. Pajamas - sleep in what you're wearing tomorrow. Video game consoles - Yes, kids will do this. You will average at 6 hours or less of sleep a night. Bringing a console means you'll stay up way too late playing video games. Winter coat - it takes up too much space. I brought a thick hoodie my second trip, and that was fine. If you have a letterman, that works perfect. Other Stuff Make sure you or your kid buys the official Grand Nats t-shirt and patch! Great for quilts/letterman jackets Don't let school get in the way. You are there for band. Worry about school when you get back. The rehearsals and performances will be better 'cause you will be focusing everything you have on band. Parents, bring things to take care of the kids. Medicine, extra food, first aid, etc. Boys, you smell. It's in your DNA. Even if you don't wash your hair, you need to rinse off in the shower every day. Ladies, you probably don't smell. You could go the entire trip without showering. Everyone - you will average at 6 hours of sleep a night. When your band directors tell you to sleep, GO TO BED. It's the end of the season, and I'm sure you'll all be sick and tired of each other. Try to enjoy it, and don't talk bad about other people like you usually do during the season. Students, as long as you keep your focus on band, this will be the best weekend of your life. THE ONLY THING YOU SHOULD DRINK IS WATER. Parents, you too. Enjoy yourself. If I forgot something, reply to this post. Tubalord11, Zil and Toasted Almond 2 1 Quote
