Well - I started the 2019 BOA San Antonio feed a year ago - yes - it was just a day or so after the 2018 event.but looking at the data - that feed had more than 1,900 replies (and will get more I am sure.) and had more than 256,000 views.

so lets start talking

so in addition to the normal discussion of who will win, place and show - some things to consider

  • Will BOA have Semi's in San Antonio?
  • Will UIL proposed changes impact BOA SA - will bands have to choose?
  • Will adding Semi finals and a Thursday event impact participation in the dome

ready - set - GO!!!

I think Semis would really help the judges and the performers. But how does it practically work? Does the competition start on Thursday? Or go into Sunday?

Area contests will be held for all classifications every year. Next year 5A area will occur on the same weekend as BOA SA.

on Thursday - with local bands going early - Texas is still the bible belt and you cannot have a competition on Sunday

From a student's perspective, semifinals would be a phenomenal idea! Considering how many schools don't get to make finals, semis would give an extra chance to perform their show for the last time (assuming the school is going to BOA SA as their last comp for the season).

Semi-finals is very much a must. It;s unfortunate that 5A bands are being put in this predicament though.

Semifinals isn't going to happen next year. BOA doesn't want to lower the prestige of Grand Nationals by making San Antonio into a three round competition.

I think the biggest dynamic for San Antonio 2020 depends on the date! We know UIL will be held Nov. 2–4, but San Antonio dates haven't been confirmed yet. If it is actually held Nov. 6–7 as the rumor mill is spreading, then that really could change what groups we see at San Antonio, since it doesn't conflict with 3A and 5A Area preferred dates, but it could also see fewer 6A bands since they aren't getting that extra run in the dome right before state. If it is instead held Oct. 30–31, the weekend before UIL, then yeah it'll still be crazy as always, but without those 5A bands and with fewer 11 minute shows than this year because it's a 6A state year.

How many bands do you think will sign up this year? There were what- ?90? This year. Some of them weren't able to perform because there weren't enough spots.

Seems like a lot of the top class 5A bands like Cedar Park, Rouse, Wakeland, etc. would probably decide to enter BOA San Antonio rather than compete in the area contests. This could open up the area contests for a lot of other bands to get into finals and have that experience, which is always a good thing.

This is another thing that concerns me about every-year area and BOA SA conflicts. Since many of the top bands may opt to skip area in favor of BOA SA, the prestige of the label “Area Champion” will be muddied as other bands in the area that debatably perform at a higher level will not compete at the Area contest at all.

the numbers this year for SA far exceeded the number requested for Gnats. there is a cap that was lifted 2 years ago from 64 to 84 for all Super Regionals but there are many that were turned away for San Antonio - there were more than 90 that applied for SA
