2023 BOA San Antonio Super Regional (Nov. 3 & 4)

The number of competitors also can make a difference as the judges are trying to differentiate the bands by gapping the scores they receive.  So a band who gets 20th place in prelims at a big contest like Austin or DFW may be scored lower than they would with the exact same performance placing 5th at a smaller regional with less big names.  In my opinion scores are worth looking at but not putting much stock into.  I usually pay attention to the high score of the contest and how much of a gap there is between the top placing bands and that is helpful but beyond that scores are pretty meaningless to me.

After seeing the tonight following Vandy at the football game, I'd say they're back in the mix. Much improved over BOA Austin

There are too many good bands going for me to make a placement prediction, other than Vandy taking everything. But I can list my locks and bubbles. There are a lot of Bubbles, especially after TMC on Saturday.

LOCKS
Vista
Vandy
Cedar Park
Cedar Ridge
Round Rock
Woodlands
Reagan
Rouse

BUBBLES
Westwood
Lake Travis
Westlake
McNeil
Bowie
Bridgeland
CTJ
Marcus
Leander
LD Bell?

Is there anyone I missed? McNeil really jumped high at TMC so I'm including them as a bubble for the first time in my life. Round Rock improved a lot since Austin. CTJ has gone down in placements since last year and was beaten by Bridgeland in Katy. Bowie has done better in the past, but I don't want to count them out yet. How has LD Bell done? I feel like I haven't heard from them in forever. Same with Marcus. Westwood's show is great, so I'm including them as a bubble as well.

Edit: I put Westlake twice, lol

Definitely Timber Creek and Keller Central. I think Timber really should make it in seeing how well they did at Prosper, and KC also had an amazing day

Wakeland should definitely be in there too

Ld Bell placed first at Prosper in prelims and while they dropped to 4th in finals, they were still ahead of everyone else in the music and visual captions other than Wakeland.

Marcus being put on the bubble list is criminal after their victory over Flower Mound at DFW. They will be in, and they’ll do much better than last year.

I feel as though CTJ will make it as well. SA finals without CTJ would be strange. But I don’t think they will do as well as they have in the past.

Bridgeland could make it, they had a good showing at Katy. Would be good to see a first time finals appearance from them.

I think Lake Travis has a better shot at making it than ever.

It's tough. I'm in the camp we won't have any new SA finalists but you never know. (Wakeland has made it in before right? I'm not sure but I imagine they have in the early 2010's late 2000's?).

Timber Creek could break in and I have them as the most likely to out of the group of bands that have never made SA finals before.

Correct, Wakeland made finals in 2015.

imma update my original group of 9 by adding Wakeland. sooo then we have the following 10 bands: Cedar Park (P1), Round Rock (P2), Vista Ridge (P2), Cedar Ridge (P1), Rouse (P1), Vandegrift (P1), Ronald Reagan (P2), Marcus (P2), Wakeland (P2), and The Woodlands (P1). that's 5 from panel 1 and 5 from panel 2 if i did that right.

which leaaaaves 4 spots for Westwood (P1), Claudia Taylor Johnson (P2), Keller Central (P1), Westlake (P1), Leander (P2), Lake Travis (P2), McNeil (P2), Bridgeland (P2), James Bowie (P2), Timber Creek (P1), and LD Bell (P1). a few others you could prob throw in there from H-town and south Texas but im guessing these ones are the most likely finalists.

My take is CTJ Lake Travis Timber Creek and LD Bell take the last 4

im gonna have to watch all 11 bubs one after the other on YT to make my decision on that lol.

this week w/ uil region and area shouuuld produce some useful vids. don't think we'll get any better info than that before the late season contests hit. just have to imagine the shows performed indoors, can be useful.

I pick College Park as a dark horse for finals after their show at Lone Star Preview imo

actually now that im watching some of the bubs side by side i don't think my original list is comprehensive enough, there are other non-listed bands hanging w/ em. also there's at least 1 band in that 10 probable finalists grouping that i could see not in the top 5 in their panel and just barely making it into finals.

could def expand my list to include more H-town or DFW bands, a little central TX skewed atm.

I think College Park had a really strong showing at Lone Star Preview and they have a pretty decent chance of making it in finals. I didn't feel like they were too far off from Bridgeland. Sleeper pick for sure ;)

i recommend watching their (round rock)  performance from tmc. they only had about 5.5 minutes of the show on the field in austin. they do have a little excitement in the last couple of minutes.  the first half of the show is a little subdued but they make up for it in the second half

I did and agree that they are doing much better. But they are still missing many scoring opportunities in the first half. There are a couple of instances where they are playing to the backfield and when they turn toward the front, their volume is the same or near the same with no impact. The first half is still flat, which it doesn't have to be. There is much potential not being realized.
