  1. I would love to see waxahachie medal. It might be a long shot, but they've got the chops.
  2. Any news from Keller? Someone said they were announcing yesterday.
  3. Thank you for updating the site! I must admit that I got a bit scared when I first tried logging in on mobile and it was different than I was used to so I haven't been back on in a few weeks. I'm sure I will get used to the changes, but it takes me some time haha. It does look nice though!
  4. I would probably put Cy Fair and Seven Lakes at or near the level of Oak Ridge and Clear Brook as well. JET has also been pretty consistent.
  5. Oh wow, I can't believe I forgot about SFA. It just goes to show you how many great and surging groups there are in Houston right now. Oak Ridge is definitely one of my favorites.
  6. I agree with everything said above. Tompkins was a huge surprise and standout for me this year. I've also loved Clear Brook and JET the last several years. Westfield gets my honorable mention for having another strong year. I could see them making Houston finals again within the next few years at this rate.
  7. Sounds like something about having children... weird. Maybe about the baby boomer generation?
  8. I love this message and the things you are teaching your daughter. Great reminder!
  9. Yes, it was definitely LD Bell. Their music: Valhalla - Daniel James Serenada Schizophrana, mvt 1 Pianos - Danny Elfman Enjoy the Silence- Depeche Mode (Eric Whitacre ver.) Now We Are Free- Hans Zimmer I've said it before and I have to restate given the relevancy that they had my favorite music book of the season.
  10. I'm dying over here at "the stupids"
  11. Wow. Leander leaves arguably the best 6A marching band district to join arguably the best 5A marching band district. Great halftime shows every Friday in northern Austin.
  12. Honestly, these both look crazy difficult. Adding Prosper, Wylie, and Plano East to the already top strong area C makes that scary.
  13. Honestly the two divisions would probably be fairly equally competitive as most of the Austin schools are smaller.
  14. I didn't even realize that some regions have a separate audition for 9th graders.
  15. Even in affluent areas, it is nearly impossible to get an increased budget allocated towards the arts. It might have changed since I was there, but my school district didn't offer Orchestra at all.
  16. Interesting. I didnt have the energy or time to really analyze what is going on, but it seems like there will be some movement between the DFW areas. Notably, Prosper and Plano ISD are switching areas.
  17. Perhaps Del Rio? They seem to be doing as much BOA as they can...
  18. https://www.prosper-isd.net/pisdhighlights?fbclid=IwAR0--UNOeIRJolL5fTDrsepFvQvkZh3jxbQAmpw8NtPxBeI7x48ejHcIJXc Rock Hill High School (Prosper) hires JP Wilson as the new band director. Wilson has been the associate director at Hebron for several years. I think it is safe to say that Rock Hill will be a competitive group in the coming years as well.
  19. Did Flo-Mo ever leave that theme? I know the last two years were a bit more abstract, but vitrification is a form of art to me, and pop was focused on pop-art- though not in the same realm of artistry as the 2015, 2016, or 2017 shows.
  20. I've been thinking about this a whole lot and have come up with a seemingly uncommon opinion. To me, this title should go to the band that did the most to advance music education during the decade. Yes, they should be a successful group, but to me the impact they made is more important. Every competition, by its nature, will have a winner. But being a winner doesn't automatically make you great, memorable, or influential. With that preface- my choice would be Hebron for the rapid pace at which they are advancing musicality and music education. Their concert band is fabulous and their marching band has medaled in both GNats appearances this decade. But to me, they seem to be pushing music educators all across the state and country to expand what is possible on the field. My second choice would probably be CTJ. They are challenging the Texas identity without compromising the Texas flair. They deserve recognition for the methods they have established to teach challenging shows quickly and effectively to the students in just mere weeks.
  21. I believe a group can "self-promote" but they are only moved up automatically if they place top 5 at Championships. I'm just going off of memory, but I think Keller got 6th or 7th in class A 2 years ago and opted to stay class A. Last year they competed two groups in class A and both did decently well. I think their guard has gotten smaller this year though from watching their field show.
  22. Perhaps some of the small schools in East Texas that historically were military style but recently switched to Corps style will switch back.
  23. I just wish that Morten Lauridsen allowed his pieces to be adapted for marching band. He has a number of incredible works that would make for great additions to the activity.
