I had to go to meetings this afternoon, did I miss anything good?
Speaking as a former vista parent (3 kids) I'm happy to see them doing so well. And I thank everyone for heaping praise on them. They pulled big upset in 2018; and though I thought they deserved it, FloMo did as well. I think Vista had a real crowd-pleaser and judge-pleaser show that overcame any minor technical problems. One judge admitted to crying, I heard.
This year, it just seems so much more competitive with 5-6 bands that would've easily won in 2018 (or other years). I wish there were a way to have a six way tie.
But this year, I think its Hebron's world and we're all living in it.
1. Hebron
2. TWHS
3. Vandegrift
4. Vista Ridge
5. Reagan
6. Cedar Ridge
7. Flower Mound

Insane scores all around, congrats to BA for the new record, congrats to my alum TWHS on the insane score (extremely proud of them). Gotta say I'm still upset at BOA's inconsistency when it comes to scores across competitions. CTJ and Ronald Reagan both somehow dropped by 3 points between SA and GN? I know for a fact it wasn't this hard to jump from bottom half to top half cause DB pushed us out back in 2017. Also Vista at 12th? And below a 90?
Yeah, Vista was 9th in prelims (92.5), 11th in semi (91.225), then 12th in finals (89.9). I thought their best run was finals, but had the lowest score. Also interesting is BA had 97.5 in prelims - so the gap between BA-Vista grew from 5.0 points to 8.3 points. They played back to back in prelims and semis.
My guess is when judging a smaller group the scores might spread out a bit as there is a bit more room to maneuver.

Mason - turn and burn! You can be my wingman any day. Great balls of fire.

Vista’s show this year certainly did have balls. And blue ones at that.
Joking aside, I that seemed like their best run in weeks. I hope to keep seeing them.

Same only gonna be there for the last block, but finals will still be amazing! Had a college visit at Purdue.
Hail Purdue! Class of 2000.

i feel that way about like ten different programs this year
i don’t know if we’ll see the highest scores ever tomorrow, but we are definitely gonna be seeing some of the closest scores ever
I would guess a little lower since many bands lost a competitive year with all the sophomores that are really freshman in terms of experience. I thought the San Antonio scores were biased lower, but of course that can could be unrelated to my point.

To understand why both UIL and BOA scoring - indeed any subjective scoring systems - are imperfect (maybe to different degrees), you have to consider variability and unconscious bias. Read the book "Noise," by Nobel Laureate Daniel Kahneman, for example.
One you accept this, it makes the competitions more enjoyable because your expectations are more calibrated.

But wow some major changes from prelims
And some of the Area competitions as well.
It goes to show the comments of one earlier poster are true - probably beyond the medalists, the placements are a little less accurate. If I were a judge (ha), I would definitely fuss a lot more about whom gets what medal than who is 10 vs 11.
Definitely Vista looked a lot more competitive two weeks ago with a victory at Area. But I'm not complaining - they got to enjoy a Cinderella story victory in 2018.

Yep - this is why I am trying to coin the phrase "undisputed" national champion. Because obviously whomever wins nationals will not have beaten Hebron. To be the best, you have to beat the best.

Half of the finalists are from DFW 😲
DFW has 3x the population of Austin metro, but who's counting 😃

Considering Pearland was in finals at BOA, they would seem to have a good chance as well.

So much for Dr. Seuss being cancelled! I love Texas.

How crowded does 6A state finals usually get? Curious how early we need to get there to get some good seats.
There will be a line forming before the gates open. Being on a Tuesday and a smaller competition, I found it is not as insanely crowded like Super Regionals are.

I appreciate Box5 turning the volume up to 700% for the interview segments to make sure we don't miss a single word.
Probably an improvement over FloMarching with the endless Rocket Mortgage ads.

I noticed another one of Vista's props showed up - the huge turning table also from their 2019 show. That sucker was heavy. I forgot which school used it - Coppell or Keller maybe? It was the carnival theme. That same turning table was bought from a DCI band. Good to see these recycled.

Yeah, I'm amazed how consistent the judging is given all the variability and subjectivity inherent to these contests. That said, there is a lot of variability. Judges and bands are all humans. In most fields, experts, in spite of being experts, tend to vary all over the place - even courtroom judges have been proven to hand out different sentences depending on the day of the week. So I give the BOA judges a lot of credit given the very difficult task.
The last point of Vista had me thinking (being one of my hometown bands that I follow). They rated 8th in prelims with 91.94, 0.11 points from making the top 7 (which was 92.05). I wonder had they positioned in the top 7, would their score have been a little higher. Same could be said of many. They were solidly in the finals (with 88.35 being first one out). I don't have the close eyes and ears most of you have, but I couldn't see why technically it swung that much.

Yep, just witnessed two guys talking smack about a band. All these kids have put in hard work all season. It’s disheartening.
This probably comes from half our population spends their days making snarky comments on social media; decorum is lost.

Add:
Undisputed Undisputed National Champion - winner of BOA GN, SA SR, UIL 6A SMBC
Based on comments, I'll amend the idea:
National Champion - GN winner
Undisputed National Champion - GN winner and undefeated in SRs
Grand Slam - GN, SR, at least one regional or other major competition, and State Champion - all in singleyear
Super Slam - A Grand Slam plus undefeated in all competitions in a single year
Tiger Slam - Holding all four titles at the same time (GN, SR, R, and State) but spread over two years - named after Tiger Woods, who did this in golf but never had a Grand Slam
Career Slam - a Grand Slam but spread over multiple year

Leander ISD’s third sweep, and now five of its six schools have participated in at least one of them.
if Vista Ridge and Vandegrift go 1-2 next week, is that a Royal Flush?
The city of Cedar Park would keep its current monopoly on SMBC titles.
Aside - with Leander dropping back to 5A, I thought it might finally be their year. I thought Rouse was underrated back in 2019, though I am pretty far from an expert.

Totally agree. It will be interesting to see how it plays out next year.
Next year is a whole new ballgame. If we have learned anything in Texas these past few years, it’s not to assume that a band will repeat the exact same success they had the year before. There are TONS of examples of that so let’s not go crowning Reagan the GN, BOA SA and UIL 2020 Champions just yet. They’re completely amazing and all, but next year is a whole new season of incredible bands and THIS IS TEXAS! ❤️
As a Vista dad, I only know one thing for sure about next year: it will be a lot less expensive and nerve wracking... for me, anyway. Youngest band kid graduating and pressuring my daughter to join guard hasn't worked so far.
I heard Leander may be going back to 5A, so that improves our chance at a repeat for state, right there!

Yes... certainly well deserved. And close... considering they placed second in Area prelims and finals just a week ago.
