I know in Plano (not just PESH), the band is only allowed one "big" trip every other year. so one year they might go to New York (for concert band), but the next year they will just do a local Texas trip, maybe to San Antonio or Corpus for a music festival. Do other districts have these same restrictions? If they go to BOA Grand Nationals, would they then be allowed another trip in the spring with their concert bands? Just curious.

I was thinking my kids take the STARS test now, no longer TAKS.

2018 BOA San Antonio?
PSHSMom replied to MadisonBandMan1's topic in Past Contests, Events, and Festivals Archive
I think technically it will end up being 80 bands (maybe?). According to their site, some of those on the list are on a waitlist. Not sure how many that is. Even with 80, that is a pretty Super-Duper Regional! This list of enrolled bands includes those currently with performance times, and those on a waitlist awaiting performance spots. The preliminary performance schedule will be published approximately four weeks prior to the event. Enrolled bands have been sent their performance block and enrollment status. -
Side note, does anyone know which Stadium Area B will be held?

Exactly, except for a few most likely locks like LD Bell and Keller, I think this Area has is pretty wide open as we haven't even seen anything yet. I've heard good things about Lake Ridge and Summit as well. I've also heard rumors that Plano Senior is also starting to make a push to be more competitive. I don't think they will match Plano East yet, but it will be interesting to see if they show any improvement in their sound and show design in the fall. PESH was also affected the most a few years ago by our realignment of schools but I think they might be finally starting to come back, so I wouldn't count them out either. I don't have kids at either school, so I have no inside info, just what I have been seeing. My youngest son will attend Plano Senior after next year (Fall 2019) and we feed into that school now. Might have to change my user name to PSHSMom then.

I have been in Texas for 25 years, but my family (brother, sister, mom and dad) all still reside in Wisconsin, so I see Madison and Brewers and I think of that. We travel up there twice a year so I make sure I retain my Cheese head status, LOL.
-
so are the references like Madison and BrewersGrill have anything to do with Wisconsin? Or is it just me being a transplanted Cheesehead that I am thinking that?

So this isn't going to help you, but your topic made me think about a show I would love to see... I would call it All About Chuck and have all the classic Chuck Magiones music... Legend of a One Eye Sailor, Children of Sanchez, Bellavia... I don't care about a theme, I just want to hear the music again. I'm old....

Just speculating as well, but along with the BOA events, there are also many other marching invitationals going on in the DFW area. I think bands have to think about the distance to each one they choose as well as the cost to the band. Isn't there some big US Marching Band thing in the DFW too? I know that BOA probably doesn't care about all the other invitational's, but maybe some bands are still trying to figure out the logistics of going to Waco or staying closer to home and going to one of the other invitational's ? I know some bands have already come out and said they are going to Waco, but maybe the number of bands that have committed to BOA isn't enough for BOA to commit to the schedule yet. Just some thoughts..

My son is trying out for Drum Major at his school for next year. Any words of wisdom I can tell him, or an resources I can have him look at that would help him? I know he says some of the kids trying out have had siblings who were drum majors previously so he's thinking he doesn't have the same resources to help train him and all. They are providing workshops, but just seeing if there are any other things I could have him do.

At least Marcus seems to re-purpose those props. I think I've seen several different props come from their "Gilded Melodies" show (not sure that was the exact name, I just remember the large gold gates). Loved that show. I do wonder where they store them though... maybe they keep them in the band trucks over the winter?
-
The PESH band director sent out a note the other week wondering if anyone knew what happened to "The Bells" Props from their 2012 show, I guess someone is interested in and/or doing the PESH show from that year and was wondering if they still had them. My first thought was that if someone had room in their house to store those things, I want to see their house, LOL. But not sure how I feel about another band doing that show! PESH made state and the BOA Finals (San Antonio) with that show, I ,kind of feel possessive about it! And if the other band does it better, I don't want to know about it

Hopefully for Area B, 6 will advance. I think in the thread called Conference Realignments they went thru the list off all possible bands, and there was a good chance that 30 bands would receive a 1 rating. At least we can hope!

2018 BOA San Antonio?

I love Carmina Burana and I am sure Haltom will do it justice. For reference, you can search for Plano Senior High Area Performance 16 1029 on You tube and it will bring up their performance from 2016 all area when they did this. PSHS did well, but I am sure Haltom will have a better show design. This was PSHS's first time coming back to all area after they stopped going a number of years ago, so it was just nice seeing them back. -
