6A UIL Area 2018
bingogooberman replied to Dog885's topic in Past Contests, Events, and Festivals Archive
Random sidebar but Hebron’s had the same head band director since like 2004 I think? Their relatively sudden ascension to the top of the Texas scene can better be attributed to a change in focus rather than a leadership change. They had a much more lax approach to marching season back in the day (not that they didn’t take it seriously or weren’t competitive) but around 2008 there was a noticeable shift that gradually led to them cementing powerhouse status by 2013. But yeah, it still stands that any program can pop off in any given year- plenty of programs (a lot in area b ) have similarly shifted their identities lately, notably Keller, Coppell, and Haltom. And there’s indication already that Duncanville seems to be on a similar path and I wouldn’t be surprised if even more do the same. The scene all over Texas is crazy right now and this contest is a testament to that. Would love to see it live -
6A UIL Area 2018

I think it’s also worth noting for area b that the Mansfield schools (Mansfield, summit and lake ridge) are in there as well and have a shot at shaking up finals, maybe even be some dark horse contenders for advancement. -
BOA Dallas/Ft Worth

Pretty strong indication that cedar park and union (ok) will be attending dfw which is super exciting- shaping up to be a stacked lineup. I think duncanville’s coming back, too, which is promising after a disappointing showing last year. Anyone know if haltom is planning on making their long awaited return? -
BOA Waco

So far Coppell, Waxahachie, Keller Central and Wakeland all have Waco on their calendars- seems to me that we’ll likely see a few more heavy hitters and that there probably won’t be any room for local groups to pop into finals, which is a shame (though I could see belton pulling it off if no more heavy hitters show up/ if they even go) -
2018 Texas BOA
bingogooberman replied to CTJBandPops's topic in Everything Music: Marching, Concert, Auditions and more
Not many bands have their calendars out, but from what I’ve seen timber creek is planning on returning to midland, and vandegrift, coppell, and Keller central are planning on going to Waco, and Reagan will be back at Conroe- everything else I’ve seen is bands attending their local regionals, which is a given, or SA- also looks like (as of now) Richland might forgo BOA again. Also word on the street is CTJ will do Waco and grand nats in addition to SA and probably Austin -
2017 Grand Nationals

Random thing I just noticed but Marcus took visual on Thursday prelims over Carmel, BA, and Avon. Couldn’t maintain that through finals but that’s really promising for them going forward. Tbh, their show was not one of my favorites thematically but seeing them tackle a harder, faster visual program was pretty exciting- if they could apply that to a more refined, late 2000s era Marcus show they could be unstoppable -
2018 6A State
bingogooberman replied to Magma31651's topic in Past Contests, Events, and Festivals Archive
I think there’s a very good chance we’ll see the same top 5 (flower mound, Hebron, Marcus, vandegrift and Keller) as they stick out to me as the most UIL friendly programs in the state. I could see CTJ spoiling that top 5 ala 2014 if they’re as polished as they were this year. I also think there’s a good chance we’ll see Bowie back in finals. -
2017 BOA SA Superlatives

Best general effect: Flower Mound Best visual: Avon/CTJ Best music: Hebron Best visual concept: Flower Mound/CTJ Best show idea/concept: Flower Mound/ The Woodlands Best solo: Flower Mound trumpet Best feature: Vandegrift choir Best musical selection: Hebron Most innovative show: Ronald Reagan/Flower Mound Most original concept: Flower Mound Best crowd appeal: CTJ/Hendrickson Most underrated: Cedar Park Most improved: Marcus- just in terms of demand and visual intrigue, they've always executed at an extremely high level, and CTJ in terms of discipline and cleanliness. Best colorguard: Avon Best pit: Flower Mound- that pit feature!! Best drumline: Hebron and also Avon due to how clean they're able to be with that comically large drumline Best brass: CTJ Best woodwinds: Hebron Best prop: The Woodlands- those orbs!! Best uniforms: CTJ and Hebron Best guard uniforms: wasn't paying attention! The only guard uniforms I remember from the season are haltoms and they weren't here- very regal though Best overall pre-show: Reagan and CTJ Best overall opener: Hebron- a musical tour de force Best overall ballad: Ronald Reagan - GORGEOUS Best overall closer: Avon, CTJ, Flower Mound and Vandegrift (too close to call!) -

Grand Nationals 2018???

CTJ is the rumor I was alluding to above which is very promising for texas's shot at a title- overall I think we'll see a light year in terms in tx participation due to 6A state, though I imagine there are some programs that are fortunate enough to take a week off school to do both but not many. I'd love to see dripping Springs take the plunge as they don't have State to worry about. I bet they'd do quite well and could be a threat for finals depending on what they brought that year -
I know, I know! It's far too early to be discussing this- the season's only been over for 2 days! BUT, it's always fun to speculate about which Texas bands will be attending and I've heard a rumor or two about which groups might be taking the plunge in 2018. Feel free to speculate as to who will and/or should be attending next year
-
I wouldn't be surprised if major non Texas programs continue to attend at about the same rate they have been lately (1 every other year or so- blue springs in 13, owasso in 15, Avon in 17) though I'd imagine some of those will be repeats. It'd be cool to see BA come in a year they skip nationals though i think it might conflict with their state championships? I'm not sure, but either way, grand nats will continue to be the premier marching contest even if SA can boast a more competitive group of finalists. What I do think we will absolutely continue to see, per jacksons post, is more and more Texas groups heading St. Louis and Atlanta, but also the 3 major Oklahoma invitationals, the blue Springs contest, and perhaps even the socal regional ala Carmel this year. Texas is so crowded that excellent groups that aren't guaranteed competitive success in Texas given the extreme level of competition will branch out to other parts of the country to get the recognition they deserve- I encourage it.

2017 Grand Nationals

Wow, Carmel becomes the first band to win all captions at grand national finals, though I can't say I agree with music (tie) win...at all....but congrats to them! -
A couple things- enrollment for this keeps getting smaller and smaller each year which is strange to me as it's always felt like the premier drumline competition in the state, even more so than pasic (when it's in tx) I'm sure the later date has something to do with it but it's something to note nonetheless. Also, I'm noticing the finals structure of this competition is gone this year. Also, as an alumnus, Newman smith dropping to ss2 red is alarming to say the least. Last year saw a slight drop off for them after losing Hobbes to vandegrift, but they were still able to make ss1 red finals. I noticed they dropped divisions at PDLC this year as well but were still able to pull out a win. Also, as golden circle members (or whatever it's called) they shouldn't be going on first but that doesn't bother me at all, just something I noticed.

I feel like we haven't acknowledged Marcus getting second in visual .02 behind Avon at SA, which is something I don't think anyone would have anticipated coming into this season and is very, very impressive for a program that has never had a reputation as being a visual powerhouse. Should be interesting to see how they'll stack up against the presumed top 4 at nationals in general, but particularly in the visual caption. i'm not certain they can get higher than 5th here but it certainly doesn't feel impossible against a top tier of bands that don't look as invincible as one would have guessed coming into the season (except Carmel) -
Finally watched Roma's show and they feel pretty safely in finals for me- they sound AMAZING and while they're definitely marching at a bit more languid pace than some other contenders, it's almost flawlessly executed so I don't imagine UIL judges will care about that- I have them pretty deep into finals but we shall see
