  1. I know we're all preoccupied with San Antonio today but it seems Bel Air HS from El Paso was a late addition to the schedule at the Van Nuys regional in southern California. They've already performed in prelims but they seem like a solid finals bet here. Good luck to them! This is one of the stronger regionals in the country in terms of top to bottom talent. I'll post results here later.
  2. I can! I’m thrilled for them, huge congrats to John horn! I’ll be paying attention closely to their program from here on out
  3. caught a video of John Horn from Duncanville finals and I have to say I'm impressed. Dark horse for advancement, I'd say
  4. either way, I think we can all agree that no one should feel wronged here. TMC acted in the interest of everyone's safety. It's unfortunate Lake Travis couldn't finish their show but to treat it as some kind of slight is silly. I'd advise students to be careful about the way they represent their programs on this forum
  5. caught a video of Hebron without that clarinet mic fiasco and they look dangerous. don't count them out of the title hunt just for an unfortunate (by their standards, at least) prelims performance at Bedford.
  6. It isn't just Warhol, but rather an homage to the pop art movement on the whole. Warhol is of course the most famous figure of the movement and we see his brillo pads and soup cans in the show, but it also directly references the work of Keith Haring, which you'll likely recognize with a quick search- his graffiti like figures are pretty iconic. I also believe the dots on their uniforms and props are likely a reference to the work of Roy Lichtenstein. There may be more references to other popular pop artists that i may have missed. I think the inclusion of Cyndi Lauper's "True Colors" is also a play on the pop theme, though I'm no expert on pop music's connections to the pop art movement. I don't think there's much hidden meaning, just another straight-forward celebration of a celebrated movement in art. This marks their sixth consecutive year of tackling such a theme. 2013 was modern art (FloModern), 2014 was the environmental art of Christo and Jeanne-Claude, 2015 was surrealism, 2016 was the work of Leonardo DaVinci, specifically his flying machine which is less art, more engineering but whatever, and 2017 seemed to be inspired by the work of architect Antoni Gaudi, though that show was a bit more nebulous, thematically speaking.
  7. Duncanville schedule's been released! 2:15- Newman Smith HS 2:30- Marshall HS 2:45- Midlothian HS 3:00- Red Oak HS 3:15- Highland Park HS - 3:45- Lovejoy HS 4:00- John Horn HS 4:15- J.J. Pearce HS 4:30- Waxahachie HS 4:45- Duncanville HS (exhibition) Finals start at 7:00pm This contest really struggles on 6A state years, which is weird considering its probably the best competition you could ask for to get ready for area. I get that a lot of schools have UIL Region this weekend but enough don't to where this kind of turn out shouldn't be happening. Also, worth noting, schedule has 8 finals spots listed as opposed to the full 9 that are competing in prelims. Not sure if that's a typo or if one of the bands is planning on skipping finals. We'll see, I suppose.
  8. now that we've seen most of big contenders, I like Flower Mound for the repeat state title. I don't see them coming out on top in BOA, but their execution was near perfect this past weekend at Bedford, the design is very UIL friendly and those white pants really highlight how great their marching technique is. Vandy and Reagan also look like potential champions. Hebron's show might be too difficult to clean to UIL standards but they're definitely in the mix. I like Hebron for the Super Regional title, though.
  9. good for lebanon trail! their staff has close ties to my alma mater (head director did her student teaching while I was there, and the percussion director was ours for 7 years or so?) congrats to them, they could be dangerous
  10. i actually prefered flomo and hebron but they all look about even
  11. scores are awfully high- though i'm not one of those people that really cares much about that but holy moley
  12. music ensemble results are...intriguing
  13. brazoswood has always sounded so good, as long as I can remember. also, did anyone notice they're now stated as being from Lake Jackson instead of Clute?
  14. God, I remember how crazy that was. they had maybe 50 people on the field and had just got 15th at Arlington the week before.
  15. congrats on pulling it out, brazoswood. finals here after fifth at mcallen is a testament both to their strength and maturity as a program, and to the quality and depth of south texas programs like san benito and john b alexander
  16. split captions in 4A seems about right- those 3 are neck and neck and neck
  17. that clarinet mic mishap was awfully distracting for hebron but wow, they are just operating at another level over there. phenomenal show
  18. I'd say Sherman's looking like a threat for St. Louis finals, too
  19. Wylie certainly looks like a potential finalist. great show!
  20. Wouldn’t say flomo is weird to be weird- it’s a continuation of their art themed shows. Pop Art- Warhol’s Brillo pads and Campbell soup. True colors set to Keith haring visuals. They’ve got a tremendous design team over there
  21. love this flower mound show. such pristine execution already.
  22. wow, yes, you can rewind! that's a game changer. Catching up with some bands I missed. watching The Colony now and they look and sound better than they have in ages.
  23. This saturday! (10/6/18) Schedule: Cedar Creek HS 2:30 PM Seguin HS 2:45 PM Connally HS 3:00 PM Laredo Martin HS 3:15 PM Dripping Springs HS 3:30 PM -- Belton HS 4:15 PM Clark HS 4:30 PM Akins HS 4:45 PM Stony Point HS 5:00 PM Round Rock HS 5:15 PM
  24. Coming back to Union, was able to track down vids of the top finishers at Owasso and glean a bit of insight into Union's getting third behind Bixby and Jenks. It's definitely a departure stylistically for them. Big picture, I think this is probably good for the program long term- shifting toward a more sophisticated, theatrical show design- but this year the design is doing them little favors. It wasn't as visually challenging or engaging as their competitors, a problem which was exacerbated by the fact that they seemed to have a bad run in general. Low energy, sloppy in spots. But they were first in Prelims, which is promising. I'm still predicting them to make finals here, but they're not as locked in as I previously thought. All in all, I think their loss says a bit more about the programs that beat them than it does about themselves. Particularly Bixby- wowza, what a step up for them. They have the look and feel of a grand national finalist caliber program. Exceptional execution of challenging drill, compelling design, phenomenal presence. They do not, however, sound like a grand national finalist caliber program. I'm afraid they've got quite a ways to go in that regard, but I'm really excited about the future of this program. Jenks was crowd-pleasing and kind of confounding from a conceptual standpoint (Carmen meets Cars, with Rihanna and death drops) but they played the heck out of it. High energy, strong visual, great musicality, exceptional guard. I think Union will probably pass them by the time their state championship rolls around.
  25. Any eyes on Keller Central? they seem like a big question mark in this impossible-to-sort-out finals bubble
