  1. haven't seen this clearly delineated since finals was cancelled and there's a separate prelims scoring sheet for each class, but here's the final results- 1. Stephen F. Austin HS- 71.9125 2. Pearland HS- 70.4000 3. Oak Ridge HS- 69.0000 4. Dawson HS- 68.3500 5. North Shore Sr. HS- 68.2500 6. Clear Brook HS- 67.3875 7. Waller HS- 66.1500 8. J. Frank Dobie HS- 59.5625 9. Little Cypress Mauriceville HS- 59.5375 10. Clear Lake HS- 59.1875 Music: Stephen F. Austin HS Visual: Stephen F. Austin HS General Effect: Stephen F. Austin HS Percussion: Clear Brook HS Auxiliary: Dawson HS
  2. Has anyone seen dripping springs? Seems like things are opening up on top, perhaps there’s a path for them to medal or even snag their second regional title
  3. I wish they’d stop scheduling this against BOA, seems like they’d have higher numbers
  4. wowww. hard to say what that means, bixby and jenks are excellent programs- underrated, I think- though both of them topping union on the same day is alarming
  5. Didn’t get the chance to watch much today, but cedar park outside top 5 makes sense given the exceptional design of Bowie and Vista this year. Cedar park’s got to step it up in design, they’re talented enough to be winning these competitions
  6. there are more finals-worthy bands here than there are finals spots. I see both of these bands in- i do think Forney has been the stronger program the last several years, but The Colony was top 5 at this contest last year, handily topping Keller Central and Timber Creek. We'll see
  7. Just jumping in in the Carmel assessment- I personally was floored by them. Not quite as visually captivating as last year, but matching that would be a big ask. I’m very impressed with their book and how well they’re already playing it. Gorgeous sound, and I’m not usually singing Carmels praises musically. CTJ does seem on top of things musically- warm sound, crisp articulation, all around great- but the design this year feels a little bit like throwing paint at the wall and seeing what sticks. I often think their shows are less focused than than their nationally competitive counterparts but this one in particular just feels messy. Don’t get me wrong, what these kids are taking on is staggeringly difficult and I’m so impressed that they could even perform it. But will they be steamrolling through this season like they did last year? I don’t think so. At the end of the day, I think had Carmel and CTJ been head to head yesterday, Carmel would come out on top, probably by a somewhat significant margin.
  8. Hanna and Harlingen will also be in the mix
  9. wow, first place scores across the board for Timber Creek
  10. wow, pioneer keeps getting better. that was a really strong, passionate run of a challenging show.
  11. had a hunch about Granbury and I was right. What a performance!
  12. Did some light digging now that we're starting to get some videos. Thoughts- CTJ- Very impressed with the level of difficulty they're taking on this season. It's like Avon 2009 only harder. It's very dirty right now, even compared to where their competitors are already at in terms of cleanliness, but if they can get this up and running it could be very dangerous. We'll see how clean they are at McAllen, but as of now I'm not certain they'll be able to take this regional. Cedar Park- Looking very good- I prefer this to last year, but I don't see them as champion contenders here. Could maybe sneak onto the podium depending on how clean everyone is. Leander- A tremendous step up in design from last year. They sound amazing and have the most compelling visual design of anything I've seen yet. This could be a huge year for them Vandegrift- Incredible sound, strong visual presence, high energy- nothing too fancy (though who knows what theyll add later on), just straight up playing and marching. This show has the makings of something special. Huge contenders for this regional title and perhaps a state championship.
  13. I know Creekview, RL Turner, Frisco Centennial, Lebanon Trail and McKinney North will be there but idk who else
  14. Also forney is a nice addition. I think they’ll likely be 2A? If so, they’re probably winning the class title
  15. No Marcus is such a bummer! Finals just got a bit easier though
  16. Random historical statistic I found while doing a deep dive of the Honor Band results on TMEA- Richardson ISD is far and away the most successful district in Honor Band competition, boasting a staggering 22 honor bands across high school and middle school levels, with each of their four high schools having won the honor at least once, and seven of their eight middle schools doing the same (only Liberty MS has never won, though there were 2nd in the now defunct 3B in 2000). They were pretty dominant in the 70s and 80s, though they boast titles as early as 1967 and as late as 2002 (and finalists as recent as this past year). For reference, the closest I was able to find was Lewisville ISD, who has had 8 different honor bands over the years. Also interesting, I can't be sure, but it appears that no one program has ever won the honor band title, regardless of class, more than three times, though there are several that have won 3.
  17. Clovis was also pretty close to American fork at the st George regional. They’re solidly on the bubble for finals but there’s a lot of groups going that feel pretty equally matched (like Sherman who was less than half a point behind Clovis at midland)
  18. In this case they probably want the BOA judges feedback before heading to Austin so they can make any necessary changes. Also for SA programs in particular, there aren’t as many competitive local contests as there are in dfw, Austin, and Houston. But i can see how going to a far away contest you’re 99.9% certain you’re going to win would seem kind of pointless.
  19. My assumption with Marcus at least is that their 2018 program was likely ready to go before drinkwater took the fine arts director job so we likely won’t be seeing a drastic change from them this season. 2019 however will be interesting.
  20. Don’t know much either but this rings true- Lopez will also be in contention.
  21. Dripping springs should be firmly top half of finals here, with top 5 definitely within their grasp. Sherman is definitely a threat for finals- Weiss might even be too, depending on how fast they develop. Their debut season was very very strong and I’m having flashbacks to vandegrift’s shocking third place finish at boa Houston in 2010, which I believe was only their second marching season, so there’s precedent.
  22. Def thinking Marcus here- cedar park is great but their design holds them back, IMO. Could see Hendrickson pulling it off but that would be insane. Another win for Marcus (it would be their 8th, if you count super regionals)
  23. All five LISD programs at the same BOA for the first time in eons. Glad to see the colony back, I assume their strong finish at HEB last year put a bit of pep in their step. The unbelievable growth in the colony lately makes me think we might see some proportional growth in their band program, but that could just be wishful thinking. It’ll be interesting to see where Wylie ends up after making a splash at SA last year. Really strong contest this year. LD Bell out of top half of finals for the first time in literal decades seems likely which is nuts.
  24. Yes, you’re just crazy, but top half of finals is within grasp for them. I like them a lot, I’m glad they’ve pursued a rigorous BOA schedule these last few years
  25. this is such a crazy line up, my initial way-too-early thoughts below: 1. Marcus 2. Cedar Park 3. Hendrickson 4. Round Rock 5. Dripping Springs 6. Waxahachie 7. Westwood 8. Keller Central 9. Wakeland 10. North Shore with Cypress Falls as the most likely replacement for any of these. Also, is that Frisco Centennial? That would be a surprising choice as their director isn't very keen on BOA (he was my director in HS). If so, they're an outside threat for finals.
