  1. I feel like Keller probably was going to go back next year, but they may not want to have two massive, expensive trips back to back. Keller Central might make the trip back though?
  2. Reagan is going to Macy's next year from what I heard. Correct me if I am wrong.
  3. You are not alone in the difficulty of determining placements from an audience's perspective. Sometimes you just can't know. The judges have the unique perspective of only looking at a single aspect of the performance at once while we as audience members are focused on being entertained and tend to rank the bands based on how impressive and entertaining they are. The more experienced audience members will be able to notice marching technique and forms and hear intonation issues, but it is very difficult to pay attention to all of these things at once and we really never get an idea of individual music performance.
  4. Im not going to lie- that Hebron show feels more like a saxophone performance with background marching band. But when you sound that good, who is complaining? Hebron seems to have mastered the jazzy ballad.
  5. I think it has more to do with the fact that bands with a history of success have mastered implementation of fundamentals that may not be as noticeable but do well in scoring. This may be evident in the individual visual or individual music captions, or it may be evident in the other captions as well. Those bands are really good at crafting shows with the perfect formula for getting the scores they need because they know what the judges are looking for after years of experience. That being said, sometimes I feel that in general effect we expect the overall effect to be better for programs that we know are good and it may have an impact on our perception of how they perform.
  6. I agree with you. I think they will will be very successful. I was just making the argument for why people arent including them as a "lock" yet.
  7. I think the main thing with Marcus is that they aren't a lock yet because we haven't seen them to confirm, not because we are doubting them.
  8. I would love to see Cedar Park get their first win or Hendrickson or Dripping Springs get a medal. Has Hendrickson ever medaled at BOA?
  9. I love this lineup! This is taking place at the same stadium as Area B, and as a non-BOA competition may give some great insight for what will happen when considered together with results from this weekend. 5 6A Area B schools made DFW finals: Keller, LD Bell, Timber Creek, Waxahachie, and Prosper. I am not suggesting that these 5 are all certainly going to make state, but all are in a good position. This competition will give us a great look at the other bands that are fighting for a spot. Coppell, Keller Central, and Duncanville are all competing and Richland and Haltom are giving exhibition performances. These 5 bands all stand a great chance at nabbing a state bid. Plus there is Flower Mound and Keller, which should both have great performances coming off of Gold and Bronze medals at DFW. I hope we get to make predictions for this contest!
  10. I've had several responses to my comments about band fees. I feel I need to add to what I said before. My comments were specifically in response to the assertion that small schools are disadvantaged monetarily. If money is what your program is wanting, it comes down to what the program is willing to ask of the members and how much those members are willing to pay. I see the valid point that in these smaller schools, there may be more individuals that are participating in multiple activities and therefore unwilling to pay as much for fees. To that I have to say, it seems the problem then goes far beyond money. If the students are splitting their time and energy between many activities, they wont be able to produce as good of a show, regardless of the design component or money spent on the show. In response to the assertion that individuals in 6A schools cannot participate in as many activities as the smaller schools, I think that is false. Perhaps students are unable to achieve excellence across each of the multiple disciplines, but in the larger schools, a larger variety of activities are offered. My name had about 20 different sports, clubs, and organizations listed next to it in my senior yearbook. If students wish to be that involved, they have the opportunity. Also, I have seen members of the football team in full pads play with the marching band during halftime shows in now 6A schools (what were at the time 5A schools). And now my final comments which may seem a bit contradictory- the truth is, I dont like the idea of paying for excellence either, but I think it is only fair and true to economics. If a school has enough individuals willing to participate in band even with extremely high fees, there must be something that is causing the demand for that program to be so high. It is only natural though that many students under this system are unable to participate and do not get to benefit from great music education because of the expense. I am among the people that would not have been willing to pay high fees to participate in band. I went to a school with a great marching band program, but I chose to receive my music education in other ways, mostly because my talents were in vocal performance, but also because I did not wish to devote the time and money that others put into achieving excellence. Others may not have sought music education in other places and may have missed out because of this. It is unfortunately a sacrifice that comes when a school desires to produce a high quality product on the field.
  11. It was a cool experience to get to hear an individual player. However, even though it wasnt the fault of anyone in the band or even the band itself, it cant be denied that the performance was less enjoyable because of it. What I have to say doesnt matter, but I think we shouldnt be giving scores based on what it would have sounded like. We talk about how the microphones can add to the quality of a performance and that makes scores higher. Likewise, if people decide to use those microphones in their design, I think they should simply be taking the risk that if things go wrong they have to deal with it and make it the best. Hebron sounded good enough even with the issue that they probably still would have been in 2nd going into finals, and definitely wouldnt have fallen out of the top 5 in prelims, but I think their music GE and music ensemble scores should have been impacted a little bit.
  12. Making top 5 in prelims at regionals is important because it determines if you will compete in the first or second half of finals. It is often difficult to break from the bottom half into the top half because of the way they give better performance times to the top 5. Thats why it was significant that 5-7 was so close.
  13. I like things getting changed up. The moment none of the Lewisville or Leander schools make BOA SA finals (just an example because of their dominance- nothing specifically against them) will be an exciting day with all of the new schools that will make it.
  14. Reagan and The Woodlands, too... The 10th is probably Bowie. Then Cedar Park, Hendrickson, Cedar Ridge, and Marcus are the most likely other 4 spots. I just wouldnt say those 4 (actually 5 in my opinion including Bowie) are locks.
  15. Is lebanon trail one of the giant horde of Frisco schools?
  16. You keep saying small schools don't have money as if there is a distinct divide between the rich, big schools and the poor, small schools. Plenty of big schools come from just as poor areas or are poorly funded in their fine arts programs by their districts. When it comes to it, most of the money towards a show is going to come from student band fees. The real question I guess is whether people are willing to pay to participate in the band. If not, then maybe the program has other issues beyond money.
  17. Prosper added quite a bit to their show and Keller didn't. That gave Keller the chance to get their show cleaner and sounding better like prosper had done with their first 4 minutes at HEB.
  18. Once we know the schedule (is that already out?) we can speculate who will get screwed over.
  19. Well, the Conroe people did get to perform again in finals, which usually helps lead to a better show.
  20. It was probably just a situation like me, where they forgot about them more than anything. Also, after the Mansfield contest today, we need to be talking about Richland more. They will be going to Indy in a few weeks, so we will get a good view of how good they are there. At DFW we also saw that both Martin and Trinity are outside contenders along with Plano East and Southlake Carroll that have already been mentioned on this thread. Man, I could keep listing other bands, but I won't since I think we are at 12 or 13 right now...
  21. I don't quite understand Bowie's show, but I still like it! Haha
  22. That's what makes me sad. This was Keller's first ever medal in a BOA regional. I wish it could have come in a different way where they had a chance to follow up in a finals performance and experience the excitement of a retreat.
  23. The Music Ensemble judge gave Hebron an 18.30. I know that Hebron sounded great, but we can't deny that they had sound issues (whether it was their fault or not). I'm not saying that they aren't deserving of 1st place, but that was by far the highest score given to any band by any judge. Then they gave 2nd to Waxahachie and 3rd to Trinity? And Coppell got 20th, Keller Central 25th, and Union 14th from them... I just don't understand.
  24. Some of those scores are baffling.
