Hey how’s the parking situation around the dome? We heard about park of the parking lot being used for a Covid vaccine site, and didn’t know how much that affected parking availability.
just forwarded an email from your booster/crew to our person that is overseeing the BOA-SA event and the parking situation - I will post more on the parking on our #teamtexas page later this afternoon on best way to get in and out of dome this weekend for BOA-SA as soon as I have it.

Top 12 predictions anyone?
I assume the "usual"
- Vandegrift
- Ronald Reagan
- Woodlands
- FloMo
- CT Johnson
- Hebron
- Marcus
- Vista Ridge
- Cedar Ridge
- Keller
- Westlake
- Coppell
Not in that order of course. Just the Top 12.
But what do y'all think of the "breakout" bands from DFW: Timber Creek and Southlake Carroll? Carroll, especially has surprised us consistently in a good way. Timber Creek shocked me yesterday with a Top 5 finish. I had them at 7th. Good momentum for both these fantastic bands.
based on yesterdays results I would say that the the top half at SMBC will be - in no order
FloMo - bested Hebron
CTJ - bested Reagan
Vista - bested Vandy
Hebron
Reagan
Vandy

Woodlands will not be there - they opted out of state

Wow, VERY rough draws for Waxahachie, Marcus, and Round Rock going 1st, 2nd, and 4th. I remember in 2018 the Woodlands was the 1st band to perform and they nearly missed finals finishing 12th in prelims. Hopefully these groups are still able to perform at a high level.
Great final block though- Flo Mo, Reagan and Vista Ridge all in a row. then Coppell and CTJ towards the end of that block

So much can change with the contest format, and especially when you have all the heavy hitters coming together in San Antonio these next few weeks, all bets are off👀
you are right - so many heavy hitters that are coming together in the dome next week for both UIL and BOA. Vista Ridge over Vandy, CTJ over Reagan - to name a few, this will not change the fact they are all competing a week from now with new judges and 2 very different format between BOA and UIL - there is a still a lot of time and changes that can be made in the coming week and it will be interesting to see what the programs will do. who will reach for a UIL balance - who will go more for the BOA angle - while they are getting closer in their judging styles - there is still a very different approach - the next 2 weeks will be very interesting to see. let's do this

This makes sense to me. In fact, I saw this in action tonight at the finals. I watched a judge at the top of Kelly Reeves stadium when Reagan started their performance with 2:35 left during their setup time. The judge didn't say anything into his recorder during those final 2.5 minutes. When the countdown timer reached 10 seconds, he waited until the countdown reached 0:00 before picking up his recorder to give critique about the show.
the announcer will announce the program at about 10 seconds prior - the clock starts after that - anything before that is just pure audience gravy

Vista gonna win nats 😎😎
way too soon to call that - to much music still left to be played in the next 2 weeks. VR will do well. but time will tell. I think we are going to see some other shake-ups in the Area results later tonight and UIL while changing is still a much different animal from BOA - let's ride the wave - it is going to be a great ride

I can't speak to the why, but my memory tells me they drop the 8 minute (I think this is the correct number) performance time limit for finals. I haven't dug through all the rules, and it could have changed of course. There is still a "total time" to get on the field, perform, and get off the field which I believe is 15 minutes.
my understanding is a 15 minute window, they enter the field 5 minutes before the clock starts - many will start their show at 2 minutes prior to the clock and band announcement. but they have an 8 minute judging window - exceeding that window is major penalty or a DQ (not sure which) and then exit the field. as many programs that do pre-shows and have a full 12 minute show, you don't want to risk the fault early on - it is tough on the DM's and the students to have a cold start for UIL and then go back to their BOA start next week. Hope the finals goes well for all the programs tonight

Since CTJ's show is longer than the UIL time limits, I'm guessing what they performed at Region (from the first opening hit to halfway through the closer-ish if I'm correct) is what they're going to be performing for the entirety of the UIL process?
generally - yes - they do not perform their pre-show for UIL and generally start before they get on the clock to come under the time limits. they have changed up a number of parts the past 2 weeks - excited to see how the finals play out
-
I think that 6A Area D is a toss up between Reagan and CTJ right now - both had great runs in prelims today in Austin. Finals should be interesting tonight

Given how Reagan, CTJ, and Round Rock are going to both the Super Regionals and Grand Nationals, how likely is it that all three of these bands will choose to participate in the State marching contests as well? I ask because we all know these three bands are a lock for state. But it seems like participating in three marching band contests over the span of 8 days in two different states is pretty daunting. Would one or more of these schools choose to opt out of state in favor of the BOA competitions?
in 2016, CTJ opted out of State to ensure that their equipment made it to Indy timely - as they generally opt for a Thursday Prelim performance. every program has their own process, but it comes down to the district allowing the days out of class. this year,

Panel 1 is definitely the stronger panel. The first block on Friday alone has 5 likely finalists with Reagan, Blue Springs, Vista Ridge, Broken Arrow, and Flower Mound all performing very close to each other, with a bubble band in Rosemount in betwen them. Then you have Marcus, William Mason, Round Rock, Dobyns-Bennett, Homestead, Castle, Brownsburg, and Marian Catholic also in Panel 1. Going to be tough to get into the top 11 from that panel.
Panel 2 strongest block is the last block on Thursday Night with Lawrence Township, Avon, Carmel, O'Fallon, Wando, and CTJ to finish the night. - Panel 1 has 5 of the 7 Texas programs in it. should one heck of a weekend for band.

1 hour ago, Rubisco said:Ooo, is CTJ going to go every other year from now on? That's exciting! Nationals will be a lot better because of it!
their first trip was in 2011 and made finals in their 4th year of opening. after that I believe it was felt that we should stay in Texas and work on taking on the Texas schools and getting some wins at BOA and build their brand. 2014 wins in Conroe and San Antonio led to plans to attend Indy in 2016. 2017 was an undefeated season with wins in Austin, Midland and San Antonio and led to the plans for the 2019 trip to Indy. going this year puts them on the same cycle as TWHS and Round Rock.
With the creation of out Bands of CTJ Foundation, it is our hope that we can support trips like Grand Nats and reduce the cost to ensure that every child has the ability to attend. this year our foundation has supported the Grand Nats trip for CTJ as well as support one of our cluster middle schools for their trip to Midwest Clinic in December and some new instruments for our other middle school. the goals of the foundation is to support the entire cluster. as many have noted, the cost of the trip is a major reason why so many schools limit their trips to Indy.
I am hopeful that they stick to the every other year schedule but that ultimately will be a district decision as well as any desires for additional out of state trips. I don't know that they will ever do Macy's Parade but I believe there is a desire to make a return trip to the Rose parade. fingers crossed.

It is always a bit of a crapshoot with Texas bands making the trip up to Indy. Any band with hope of competing for the Eagle has a lot of built-in advantages to overcome compared to the bands from Indiana/Ohio, etc. But if we can keep sending a half dozen San Antonio Finals-worthy bands each year, we will have a shot each year.
I think that's what it takes to have an even shot at Kevin making his home in the Lone Star State each offseason.
I agree, I am excited to see that we have 7 quality 6A programs going to Indy - I hope more programs start to take the approach of going every other year like TWHS, CTJ, and Round Rock. I know some programs prefer an every 3 or 4 year schedule due to the cost. but I agree we keep sending a strong contingent and we increase the chances that Texas bands continue to dominate the finals and take some medals

My predictions based on last weeks contest:
1st Place… Ronald Reagan!
I think Ronald Reagan has more to cleanup than Vandegrift and that it will add more to the show.
2nd Place… Vandegrift!
3rd Place…. Cedar Park!
4th Place….. Marcus!
5th Place….. The Woodlands!
6th Place….. Claudia Taylor Johnson!
7th Place…. Cedar Ridge!
8th Place….. Hebron!
9th Place…. Leander!
10th Place….Westlake!
11th Place…. Vista Ridge!
I don’t see this show coming together. The directors seem stubborn in keeping the voiceovers. GE Effect score at Austin agree.
12th Place….Seven Lakes!
Most room for improvement. Will jump Pearland by a sizable point gap into finals.
13th Place…. James Bowie!
14th Place…. Keller!
Cleaning really slowly. Cleans very nicely. Will be rewarded with finals.
I won't be so bold as to predict placements this early. Here are my predictions in Alpha Order for the top 7 and the bottom 7 in finals.
TOP 7 Finalists
Cedar Park
CTJ
Hebron
Marcus
Reagan
TWHS
Vandegrift
BOTTOM 7 Finalists
Cedar Ridge
James Bowie
Kellar
Leander
Rouse
Vista Ridge
Westlake

Cedar Park was amazing and has a brilliant and wonderfully executed show. But to be fair to CTJ they had electrical problems and performed their entire prelims show without most of their front ensemble...with some of the drill and choreography performed in complete silence.
and yet one of the judges had them in 4th in prelims and the same 4th in finals in a different music caption even though prelims has no piano's or pit in a show that is about dueling Piano's

With a little sleuthing, I would say Cypress Woods. According to his profile he lives in Cypress, and the only Cypress school I see on the current list is Cypress Woods. They were outstanding at Conroe, so I think they could be top 20 at SA, and could sneak into finals.
and they perform after Hebron

so, since it has been 2 years since we had BOA San Antonio, I looked at the rules in the BOA adjudication handbook to refresh how the 2 panel prelims will place bands in finals.
here are the actual rules.
2021 San Antonio Super Regional Championship: For determining the Finals Competition, the five (5) highest scoring Bands in each Prelim panel (10 total), regardless of class, will advance; plus, the next four (4) highest scoring bands determined from a combination of remaining scores from Prelims 1 and 2, regardless of class, will advance. The panel of judges for Finals will be comprised of a combination of adjudicators from both Prelims panels
with that said, here are my current thoughts on the top 10 (5 from each panel) that will advance to finals in San Antonio. with the remaining 4 being selected based on next highest scores.
welcome your thoughts - I know it is early but lets have some fun with this.....
these 10 are in Alpha Order regardless of panel
- Cedar Park
- Claudia Taylor Johnson
- Hebron
- Leander
- Marcus
- Reagan
- Rouse
- The Woodlands
- Vandegrift
- Vista Ridge
we are a month out - let's see how well this post ages

WOW - looking at the times and groups for panel 1 and 2 for San Antonio - while the participant numbers are down (expected), this will be a very interesting match up as they pair the 2 panel process for finals.
So looking forward to this event.

The original schedule that was published had 4 TBD spots (2 in each panel) knowing that as state advancements were finalized there could be more programs wanting to take an empty spot - especially local programs that could give the kids the experience of the dome. it is a great means to introduce the program to BOA
