And missing a LOT of school. And avoiding general burnout.
that is my concern as well - burnout, if you look at the programs that are going to Grand Nats, they are looking at 7 performances in a 9 day span. 4 in the Alamo dome and then 3 in Indy. Reagan and CTJ have the advantage of sleeping in their own beds with no long bus rides after their shows in the dome. but even then, those are some very long days and then the immediately head out to Indy - hopefully all are flying and not doing that long bus ride to Indy. Good Luck to all of them as they prepare to run their gauntlet of band competitions. the directors are going to have their work cut out for them in keeping them motivated through that stretch.

It’s possible they don’t want to “tip their hand” with only a few weeks to grand nats, with a show that’s likely more demanding than the average year and on an extended timeline in terms of cleanliness. Or perhaps just getting to use those days for rehearsal is reason enough. No matter what, I’m expecting big things from them.
or it could be the cost of 2 trips to San Antonio in a 5 day span in a year they are already going to Indy. either way - I can't wait to see their show this year

I'm sad that I am just now seeing this and the store is closed. I am sure there would have been many FloMo parents that would have bought merch.
We had shared it with all the booster organizations. The GOOD news is that the store will reopen on 9/1 until 10/1.
join us on our Facebook page - #teamtexas 2021 Grand Nats - we have info on the stores and you can follow the 7 programs as they head through their season up to grand nats in November

I have bolded the programs that I think are the likely finalist for BOA Austin - this is based on history and does not take into account the 2020 Covid pause. we still do not know what that impact will have, as all programs will have both a freshman and sophomore class that will be seeing their first real BOA marching season, and many will have 2 classes that have never marched competitively.
Just my thoughts, but I think that the medal race at this event will be between (in Alpha Order) - the great thing will be seeing them again a few weeks later in the same stadium - plus Reagan - for the TMC Event - THAT will be the event to see

for those of you that are planning on attending BOA Grand Nationals but do not have access to a program that is attending to join their group purchase for a block of seats. The BOA Grand Nationals tickets will go on sale to the general public on Wednesday Sept 1st - if you need to purchase tickets, please keep a close eye on it as we do not know at this point what the Covid-19 social distancing will look like in December. Most attending schools that are attending will do block orders so they can sit together but there are reserved options for Semi's and reserved and club level options for Finals. I have attached the options and pricing for semis and finals for your review - again - opening 9/1

These are the bands that I have confirmed are attending - I would be surprised to get an announcement that late, that is a big amount of money to throw together that late. but if it happens, I would work with the vendor to see if we could adjust for the second opening of the webstore in late August. if there is another band out there that is planning to go they have done a great job keeping it a secret.

Sorry, this past week I reached out to the directors/boosters from all the programs and some asked that we hold off on launching the store until Monday July 15th with so many of their families out of town for summer trips/vacation. the first round of the store will run from 7/15 through 8/15 and will ship the week of Sept 6th. the second order window will be 8/30 to 10/3 and will ship the week of 10/25
All proceeds with be shared with the schools attending so be sure to pick the school you are supporting when you place your order. Have a safe and happy 4th of July. I will share the link here when we open the store.
I tried to attach the PDF of the products here, but it is too big. I will post today on the "#teamtexas 2021 Grand Nats Facebook page"

If that's the list, there's a very real chance Brandeis could win this! What was the last time an NISD band won a BOA competition? Never I think. I'll be rooting for the orange team this time.
I am a fan of Brandeis and could see a medal for them - I think the early favorite to win would be John B Alexander for this one.

Isn’t it crazy that they can be a 5A size band in UIL but only 2A in BOA?!
Texas UIL counts school enrollment of 9th - 12th graders. BOA only counts 10-12th grade students as they are a national circuit and while Texas middle schools are 6-8 and High School is 9-12, the west coast is 7/8th for middle school and in the east and others do middle school 7-9 and 10-12th for High School. When Texas schools open and explode with transfers and the new freshman class does not count for BOA you get some big programs that compete in the lower classes of BOA - it is usually an advantage as it is a smaller pool of schools that compete in those classes

It makes sense if Marcus can't go, but why not Hebron? They don't have Nats the next week like FloMo and Marcus. Does their Rose Parade trip cause them to any school? I guess it's still a big financial commitment either way.
Rose does not impact school but it is a financial commitment

A lot of bands like Whitesboro and Wills Point don’t have the sufficient funds to attend the 6 regionals Claudia Taylor Johnson attends yearly and I bet they sure are sorry they don’t have a Whataburger sponsorship to fall back on.
They’re going for the experience, talk to the Whitesboro kids that went in 2016 they loved it. Talk to the Colleyville Heritage kids that went in 2008. It’s not all about the bedazzling final finishes Claudia Taylor Johnson can seemingly fund every two years. You only care about placements not the student experience. You’d take the kids hating marching over a bottom 7 finish at the SASR or a bottom 6 finish at the GN Championships. You only care about placements from your privileged mindset.
If Wills Point has decided to save money to go to Grand Nationals then why are you acting so prissy and passive aggressive about it?
They obviously know that even a class championship is a reach AND THEY DON’T CARE THEY CAR ABOUT THE STUDENT EXPERIENCE UNLIKE YOU!!!!!
CTJ is such a historically accomplished program and yet they still try and put others down. It’s unbelievable it truly is.
if you want to say that the CTJ program is privileged, it is only because we have hundreds of parents that put in thousands of hours to fundraise and support the program like every other program in the state. make no mistake, the program struggles with funding like every other program in the state and work tirelessly to ensure that no student is turned away from performing due to funding and that is no easy task.
to clarify, CTJ does not have a "cash cow" in whataburger as it is not that kind of sponsorship, CTJ does not attend 6 BOA regionals a year - they are going to Austin (90 miles away) and BOASA (in our back yard, that our program serves as the host school) CTJ does not attend GNats every 2 years - while they were there in 2019, that was the 3rd trip in their 13 year history.
to imply that CTJ is just about placements tells me that you know nothing about the program and what it teaches our kids. at the end of the day it is about putting the best performance on the field and being proud of that accomplishment and knowing that you gave it everything you had. the program has been known to stick to their style of entertaining the crowd, even at the expense of the norms of UIL and such.
at no time did I state or imply that Wills Point, Whitesboro, or any other program should not attend grand nats - just that I do not understand why a program would make that investment to attend without first competing at a local BOA regional. that was all, and had nothing to do with "cancelling" them or exercising my privilege as you have stated.
if you took something from my earlier posts that implied that I was somehow putting down Wills Point or any other program, I apologize, as that was never my intent, and would appreciate you not making your privilege comments about the CTJ program based on something you took from my post, our kids deserve better than that.

While not a TX band, I think Forest Hills Schools, OH made GN semi-finals in 2019 without attending any other BOA contests.
without a doubt - I am sure that there are many schools such as the ones in the West that do not have much BOA to speak due to where they are located that make the trek - but for a Texas band that has 6 regionals and a super regional within the state would not take advantage of those shows before making that kind of financial investment of Indy. again, just my thoughts

What about when Whitesboro went in 2016? I don’t remember seeing them before GN at other BOA contests.
Whitesboro attended BOA Austin in 2016 (finished 30th of 31 Bands) BOA Dallas (finished 29th of 31 Bands) before competing at Grand Nationals (79th of 100 Bands) that year
I do not see that they competed in BOA prior to that or that they have done BOA since that time. it appears that they do non-BOA events like teh HEB marching contest, so I would assume that it was 1 year "dip your toes in" kinda thing.

I've faced them before in UIL Area, they beat us by one point in 2016 to go to state, and in 2018, we placed higher then them at both Area and State. They are a good program, but I do agree with you on that they may want to start at a contest in DFW and then go for Grand Nationals. Has there been bands that have done this before? Like go to Grand Nationals before competing in other BOA Contests?
not sure if there has been but most directors that are going to Grand Nats want to get in front of the judges a few times in the season to get the judges comments on the show. many times the judges that are at the larger BOA events are also the judges that are at Grand Nats and that input is valuable as BOA does not judge/score the same as the non-BOA or UIL events

I think we will see less of the Covid mandates. the current wave has flattened and now on a decline in most of the Texas Metro areas. by the time BOA Austin rolls around we should be seeing people with a booster shots. At some point we are going to have to accept that Covid is here and likely to be around a while longer but may never go away. at some point we have to get on with our lives. whatever their reason, I look forward to seeing them at State and at Grand Nats
