2019 5A State
principalagent replied to PantherBone's topic in Past Contests, Events, and Festivals Archive
At Region, judges just give a 1, 2, 3, 4, or 5, without any shadow grading using a 1-100 or 1-1000 system. The only penalty available is to knock a band down a whole rating. -

They just hustled like heck to pick them all up when the show was over. I was impressed! -

It's been done both ways. Owasso was announced earlier this season. TWHS wasn't when they missed for a football game a few years ago. -

Yeah, Hendrickson wouldn't have missed in this field. They probably left for UIL. -

I personally like the DCI Regional system. Put the bands in groups of 3(-ish) and randomize within. -

James Martin did kill it today. Hopefully they can lock down two medals in two weeks! -

Blue Springs’ show is extremely devoid of emotion. Both Blue Springs and Vista Ridge went way art house this year. As a result, they’re carrying very mature and difficult shows that showcase each ensemble’s immense talent (especially visually for BS and musically for VR), but in terms of connecting with the audience on some deeper level, both seemingly fall quite flat compared to last year. I hope their design team can balance out these factors next season. -
Reagan feels a bit like FloMo ‘16 to me. I think they have this one locked up.

Can’t forget Klein ‘94! Grand National Finalist as well. -
Best show to not make state
principalagent replied to a topic in Everything Music: Marching, Concert, Auditions and more
Well I can’t say I remember what I was thinking so precisely nine months later. But it was probably something along these lines: I tend to be pretty unsympathetic to the idea that more bands should be sent from various competitive areas—especially when the argument is made in response to areas that are less competitive at SMBC that send more bands. Especially considering the fact that the 6th place band in Area B or C or the 7th place band at Area D likely wasn’t going to make finals anyway. However, if a band places extremely well in state finals or even wins, but barely advances out of area (CP 2011), or only did for an exception (Leander 2018), then I think that means the area stage isn’t getting it right. -

I'm personally really hoping Carroll makes it in. I would love for six Texas bands to make finals and see non-Texan heads explode -
Additionally, no state has ever put four of their own in the top 6. Texas is about to break that record. That's something to be really pumped about.

Texas Marching Classic 2019

It’s just what they decided to prioritize. They want to push the activity forward and entertain the crowd. Just a decision. I kind of prefer the DCI/TMC weights myself. -

Oh my god stop being so insufferable. He was in a band program that was one or two places out of Austin finals the entire time he was in high school. He gets it. You just look like a horribly sore loser and you’re reflecting poorly on your program. -
Carmel ‘17 is a masterpiece! In my opinion the best visual show this decade and I honestly don’t think it’s close. I don’t love or even really like ‘16 or ‘18 though. I’m really liking them this year but I have some big qualms that I didn’t necessarily have other years from them, even if I didn’t care for that show. Avon ‘16 is a favorite of mine. Avon ‘18 grew on me big time post-season and I really really like it now. Avon ‘17 is fine. Avon ‘19 hasn’t done much for me yet but I haven’t seen a great video of it yet either.

I think the music caption for sure comes back to Texas (Marcus 2017 was robbed). But not so sure about anything else yet.

Definitely meant their silver medal show in 2013. I think their clarinet soloist actually took away from an otherwise strong ballad. Their flute soloists have only ever been amazing. No qualms about any of them over the years. -

The woodwinds in the ballad just add a ton to the show. I really wish they had a darker brass sound though. And the horn soloist just isn’t as strong as I would want them to be. But a relatively weak clarinet soloist didn’t hold them back in 2013 so they’ll be fine.
