I believe the announcer made a correction to the prelims results saying that Keller and Waxahachie tied for the 6A visual caption

Wakeland and Keller actually tied for first in prelims.  Wakeland won on a judges preference tiebreaker.

Ditto! I saw every band in prelims except  highland park(I got there right when they finished performing. Should’ve left the house sooner!😭) then watched finals with my parents(They enjoyed it!) I may need to start bringing a seat cushion

Yes. I was calling it “funny” because at BOA they don’t list them out all at once even if there’s only 1 band in that class, they do them one at a time. It was different. People chuckled when the announcer called the 4A and 5A awards all at once

Thanks!  My oldest went to PESH and was part of the 2012 State bound band.  Then they realigned the schools and my last two went to Plano Senior.  But my heart has always been with Plano East.  I just like to see them rebuilding each year and getting better.

I saw someone use the word “stank” on here so I decided to do so myself lol

I was referring to the 1st movement when the low brass would play those accented quarter notes, alternating with the high brass. But the trombone feature has plenty of STANK in it too lol

Also I was charmed by the quality of the ensemble’s sound. I can tell they have a strong concert band program. All of those quarter note stabs were played with so much substance in the sound. The woodwinds handled that nutcracker feature beautifully, very mature with shaping those phrases, and very consistent with the quality of the eight-note parts. 

And the woodwind ensemble played like pros! Double-tonguing was sublime!

I’m impressed with Waxahacie’s risk taking with the triplets in the brass. It can be very easy to make those sound crunched and unclear, but they not only make every note speak but they put a great amount of shape into those phrases and balance and blend their sound very well with their fellow performers.

Being in their region, Lake Ridge has been doing well in head-to-head with their other fellow Mansfield schools, and my alma mater in one of the Arlington schools in all-region auditions for as long as I can remember! They prop up their kids to be successful in the fall for the spring, and of course their feeders I’m sure are fantastic. Always liked them as a group, a bit puzzled in their relative obscurity in the marching band scene, but I anticipate continued growth from them.

I see why Keller competes so well. I noticed that when they do those crescendoing phrases, they’re longer than the phrases the other bands attempt. That’s riskier as the longer the phrase goes the more likely(and easier to notice) a decay in the quality of sound can occur. And they attempt more simultaneous playing while marching.

Also that lyrical woodwind feature in the ballad was awesome! When the woodwinds play that high up, it can be easy to notice any discrepancy in the sound (like that clarinet squeak lol) but they handle it so well. Very characteristic sounds even in tougher octaves. And they shape it beautifully.

The W in Wakeland stands for WOW! Definitely their Best performance of the season!! That opening was sooo good. I loved how well they maintain a high quality of sound in those extended phrases. That opening hit with the high brass is difficult to pull off because it’s so exposed, there’s not much going on in the background so any discrepancy is easily noticeable. Clean starts and stops throughout the whole show whenever the band plays! Understandable why they were first overall in prelims.
