You'd have to go back to 2011 to find the last time Leander didn't place in class 3A. Not so sure that streak ends this year.

That's true, but Wakeland has only come to this contest once since the rise of Rouse as a 3A power and they only lost to Leander by 0.35 points (in 2023).  I do think it's dangerous to bet against Leander, but I would also say that the competition is stronger this year than usual.

I know y'all are doubting my prediction of wakeland finishing second in their class but I guess we'll find out..... Their show is written very well and it will surprise a few people..... I'm not saying rouse isn't a powerhouse but wakeland is totally different this year..... their marching technique is right there with cedar park.... but we'll see in couple of weeks....

Yea. I don't know the details, just a general impression. Of course the high school made it to honor band finals for the first time since???

I don't have a pick at the moment for SA. I think Rubisco's write up is very solid at this point. We'll get a better read at 6A state.

I've not seen anything from Broken Arrow. Will see them at St Louis. Just saw a video of Blue Springs. I don't know but for some reason I was getting Tarpon Springs vibes on the show design. I think Avon is stronger than Carmel so far. I have been given an opportunity by Music for All to attend Indianapolis Super (gratis), but I'm not sure if I can make it.

I was able to arrange to make it to most of the Indy Super. Got to my seat just a bit ago. Will be able to see most of the super regional.

Do props add to the score? For example some bands have a ton of props, while others have none. Does having no props hurt the visual or GE scores?

Having props alone doesn’t affect the score either way. However, if they’re used in a fashion that the judges think adds to the effect of the show, a band that has props may end up scoring better than a band without them.

That’s kind of what I was thinking. Wondering why some bands don’t use props. Wouldn’t that just enhance the show more?

There's a lot that goes into show designs nowadays, and while I don't claim to know any of that, there are multiple visual elements that could enhance a show, props just being one of them. There could be the costuming of the color guard/dance teams and the design of their respective flags/rifles/etc., the band's uniforms, the drill design, etc.
Also, notice that slowbrass said a band with props may score better than a band with no props. The inverse of this can also be true.

I'd argue that Cedar Park 2008 is a good example of a show that had zero props, yet was still oozing GE (and it showed in their GE scores).

No Moe & Gene, Dripping Springs, or Cedar Ridge? Feel like they're pretty likely finalists this year.

As noted before, Marcus and Coppell won't be competing at BOA-SA so there are two slots available right there.  And I agree, I think all three of those are likely finalists.  It's gonna be really tight on the bubble this year.  Which I suppose is the same as most years.

After watching several UIL Area competitions yesterday, I think this contest may be even more competitive from top to bottom than many people realize, if that's even possible. And I'm not even paying attention to the UIL results themselves, which I'm sure were very interesting. 😅

I'll try to watch the remaining three 6A areas tomorrow, but I'll be so very busy throughout the day.
