2006 Carrollton TOC - Full Recap
itsstephenyo replied to Xenon's topic in Past Contests, Events, and Festivals Archive
Hmm. Interesting. It seems the captions awards at finals were for the prelims. That's kinda weird. Also, was the percussion judge Lalo Davila? -
Wow, plastic oboe reeds. I didn't even know they made those. I could see how those would sound band, seeing as I sympathize with double reed makers. That's really tough stuff.

I hope more bands sign up. It'd be nice to have a 14 band finals, as well as a two day event. -

Yea, I thought about that. When Hebron made state in 2003, we just stayed there all weekend until state prelims. Man, now Super Regoinals will only have 12 finalists, and only one panel of judges now, correct? -
I recently counted up the number of bands participating in that competition. There are only 40! I'm wondering why there are so few bands at this competition this year. I would think that with 5A State competition a few days after that some bands would want to test the field out at Super Regionals. Thoughts?

Very nice review, Xenon. It was worth the wait.

That is true. On the whole, stick to cane reeds, especially if you get into the groove of breaking them in and really getting picky with them. If you do, they'll be the best reeds you'll ever have. If you're lazy or you just don't care very much, plastic reeds (some of them) are an excellent alternative. They get a bad rep from band directors a lot of the time. Seriously, though, Legere Studio Cut plastic reeds for saxophone are amazing. Plays just like a cane reed, that is, if you get a good one.

Haha of course. I didn't really mean it like I was demanding it now. Just a fun little hurry-the-crap-up! kinda thingy. I'm sure they'll be excellent review when you're done with them. -

Review, please? -
haha only if you suck. i've played on dozens of plastic reeds and some of them actually sound as good, if not better, than some cane reeds. the only time i've ever sounded like a "dying duck" is when i played on a 2 1/2 flavored reed i got from all-state. hahahah that thing was amazing to play on.

DDR is short for Dance Dance Revolution. It is a video game where you use a playpad under your feet to press corresponding arrows on the screen. Hebron's show is entitled "Music in Every Direction" and thus takes a hold of the DDR idea with the arrows. Hoped that helped. -
I think I'll be there for finals. I'd like to meet some people there.

Yes, I believe Hebron is going to be at Birdville. -
Ooh, I can't pass up the chance to see Richland and Haltom. I'm definitely going. But, yes, please do predictions!

I went to Hebron and graduated last year. I am now an alum. Haha it feels so odd to watch the band and not be a part of it. -

I wanted to see your (Colleyville Heritage) show but I came too late for prelims and left too early for finals. I liked ya'lls show last year. Maybe I'll get to see it at Birdville. -
Can we get a predictions page up for the Birdville contest two weeks from now?

Hmm... so they went from the air to the sea. That'll be cool, I hope. -

I believe Hebron is going. On another note, does anybody know what Marcus's show is? I am really anxious to see it after they did so well last year. -

Actually, I don't know for sure, but I think different sections of the band does different combinations. During warm up, they were rehearsing the DDR section and the beginning of it has a really awesome hemiola effect to it that kinda gets lost in the stands. As for the second half of it, I'm not sure. You (Xenon) could very well be right. -

Update for the TOC competition. All I know about finals so far is that Hebron got 1st place with Best Percussion, Best Drum Majors, and Best General Effect. If somebody else knows the rest of the placements, please fill us in. Edit: Sachse placed second, followed by Plano East Senior High in third. -
How Many Reeds do you go through in 1 Week?
itsstephenyo replied to rdzsaxplaya's topic in Section Heaven
Indeed. Playing straight on a new reed is an amazingly effective way of KILLING it. Breaking them in slowly, as in 5 minutes the first day, 10 the next, 15 the next, all with low, slow long tones will greatly improve the life of your reeds. That and switching them out. -

I'll be going to watch. It's going to be so weird to see my marching band from an outside perspective. Geez. -

Yea, that's what I said my senior year until I actually signed up for classes. Not a single music class. I was so intent on majoring in music, too, but then just didn't do it. -
Yea, I was able to catch these performances when it aired on UPN last week. Needless to say, it caught me off guard because I had NO idea whatsoever that they were to be on TV. Anyways, I went to Hebron's homecoming game last night (since I am an alum) and I really enjoyed the show. I also saw Creekview's show and was surprised at how well their show is going. Perhaps they can make a comeback this year. I would like to see that. On a completely different note, if you click on the little sublink to Flight of the Bumblebee, I'm one of the quintet members! I'm the second from the left.
