On January 31st, the GDYO Wind Symphony and the Dallas Wind Symphony are having an annual joint concert at the Meyerson. The program will be this: GDYO- directed by David Kehler Star Spangled Banner Molly on the Shore- Percy Grainger English Dances, Book I- Malcolm Arnold DWS- directed by Jerry Junkin Savannah River Holiday- Ron Nelson In Memoriam- David Maslanka George Washington Bridge- William Schuman GDYO+DWS- directed by Jerry Junkin Symphony no. 4- David Maslanka If you've never heard Maslanka's fourth symphony, you're missing out big time. Loud, loud, loud piece but incredibly awesome. 100+ winds+organ will be simply incredible, so you should definitely come.

u need to listen to more lyrical music and expand ur horizons a little bit in the music world. there are countless numbers of pieces out there that are incredibly beautiful. a climax in a piece doesnt exactly have to be super-loud either. there's more to music than just playing ff. that's wat lyrical pieces are for.

langham creek... i think one of the student teachers that helped during this past marching season just got hired there as the fourth band director/percussion dude. his name is jimmy labrecht. he's a really cool guy. short, stocky and a beast at percussion. -

im ok at it. truthfully... its kind of a useless skill. there are very few instances when u need to hold ur note for 5 hours. -
hahah i wouldnt call the screeching clarinet natural. more like otherwordly or alien.

k i figured out that im doing Dubois Concerto on alto sax... for now i told my lesson teacher that i'd learn only third movement but now im kinda thinking over learning all of it... thatd be insanely hard tho... 18 minutes of really difficult solo literature edit: i think our sax quartet (actually a quintet for this piece) is doing flight of the bumblebee. haha its actually a pretty good arrangement for it. -
1. tetris thank you.

can't really say. i've never tried one but i've heard that cannonballs are really just for looks because u can get them engraved and colored to the max or something like that...

it all depends. the best thing to do is to sit down with 5 different saxes and play all of them using the same mouthpiece and reed and stuff. that way you'll really get the best instrument outta the lot. sometimes a selmer series II doesnt play as well as a yamaha custom. it all depends on the instrument itself. now if you dont wanna try 5 different ones, you can usually ask to try out three of the same instrument and then u can pick the best out of, let's say, three Selmer series II's.

i'll start with stuff i've played. symphony no. 4- david maslanka. this piece is freakin awesome to listen to and play. wow.... its so loud and powerful. i can't wait til i get to play this with an organ and the Dallas Wind Symphony. fugue in g minor- bach. i really, really like this tune. its not overly technical but put it with a good group and it really sounds amazing. i love how wind bands can imitate the sound of an organ if u play it correctly. rocky point holiday- ron nelson. 'nuff said. this piece is just overall awesome. la tumba de alejandro garcia caturla- shelley hanson. i've never been able to find a good recording of this piece but when i played it, i really liked it. pretty difficult stuff and very intense. lads of wamphray- percy grainger to walk with wings- i forgot who wrote it. the danserye- susato. awesome awesome piece. if u havent heard it hit me up... its pretty sweet. the pines of rome- respighi. playing in the meyerson with 100+ including the dallas wind symphony playing pines of rome and organ is probably the loudest thing i've ever heard. my ears were nearly blown off by the trombones i sat in front of. also, the floor shaking because of the organ was freakin amazing as well. october- eric whitacre jesu, joy of man's desiring- bach. ive gotten really into bach lately. now pieces i like to listen to. symphonic metamorphosis- hindemith. i prefer the orchestral version over the band arrangement though. pomp and cirumcstance- crap if u've never heard the real deal u've been missing out. a child's garden of dreams- maslanka bruckner's 8th symphony tchaikovsky's 4th symphony symphony no. 1: the lord of the rings-johan de meij overture to candide- bernstein scheherezade- nikolai rimsky-korsakov jai ete au bal- grantham tam o'shanter- malcolm arnold harrison's dream- peter graham there are probably more but i have homework...

im torn between about 10 different solos to do. seriously. perhaps some sax people could help me choose between these... concerto- Henri Tomasi (if someone has a recording, thatd be really sweet) concerto- Ingolf Dahl concerto- pierre max dubois duo- hartley prelude, cadence, et finale- desenclos (probably not.. not on the PML and it'd be really hard to find a pianist that good) caprice en forme de valse- bonneau improvisation et caprice- bozza
