clarinote reacted to packwick in 2024 WGI Discussion Thread
very happy for tw. it was a great run overall, just some dirt here and there. still think they could be playing the WGI game a little better but i also respect how they just "go for it" as far as having everyone on the floor do hard stuff. really kinda fearless.
also cool to see Cyndi's visions start to come to life w/ the next level talent of the performers. poetry indeed. the theme is there for you to dig into, patiently illustrated. it's not spectacle or cutesy sleight-of-hand. it's mature and has the strangeness of good art.
but yeah def do something you can get closer to 100% clean next year unless they start to consider difficulty and risk more LOL

TWHS’ show is truly epic. Just unrelenting with the tosses, but in the most elegant way possible. Probably one of my favorite SW shows ever, partially because of the audacity to even attempt it.

ok good, Carmel up to 5th, 3 points ahead of WC in 9th. a little twilight zone-ish before.
tw still in 3rd, 1.1 pts off 2nd, 1.2 pts ahead of tarpon. 3rd's prob where they'll end up in finals, which is fab. wasn't even expecting them to show up at Dayton this yr so it's a pleasant surprise. really a treat.
cool to see them develop into a consistent medalist quality group. guard is finally as strong or stronger than the band!!! Lol. think they already very obviously have the talent for gold. designers (designer?) just need to figure out how to frame that talent in a gold medal worthy way. not to say the staging/choreo this year is weak by any stretch of the imagination, it's quite fantastic, esp considering it mostly comes from one person. but once u get to the tippy top of the world class u gotta deal w/ those legendary design teams. breadth of talent and lots of tosses won't get u gold. which really that prob SHOULD be more of a consideration on the sheets, difficulty/risk and whatnot, bc it rewards the actual performers a bit more, but alas it is not, not explicitly anyway lol. variety range and depth do provide a particular challenge of their own.

lol i mean Avon winning at Dayton in SW has been a forgone conclusion since the Avon regional. the judges are now just circling the wagons, as they often do. i don't mind an Avon win bc they have the cleanest show and it's elegantly written but the gap will likely bug me.
also maybe Carmel had a really lousy run tonight. LOL. cool to see Fishers so close to them.
WHY is the wgi site still down?!!

I think TW was still scored too low, but I’m biased, and not a judge. Lol

I'm impressed by how they changed some of their show on the fly between prelims and finals. That front walkover toss after the opening ensemble rifle toss was not in the show in prelims. They had a nearby girl play substitute. The fact that they can just throw in such a difficult toss like that and have it be clean is really impressive.
Much cleaner run. Honestly, their score in prelims was also too far off the top, even with the weaker run. I just don't see a 10 point gap between them and Avon, especially taking into consideration the depth of the talent on display in TWHS. I find their show astounding.

Lots of premieres all over the country! I think the Indiana world guards and some of the top North Texas ones are waiting until next week, but pretty much everyone else around the country has some sort of contest today.
Surely there must be some lurkers here attending these events! Keep us informed!
Bueller? ..... Bueller? ...

Both NTCA and TCGC hold their first competitions this Saturday, at Martin HS and Goose Creek Memorial HS. TECA held their first contest this past Saturday. WTCA and WGI hold their first events on February 17th. WGI seems a little later than usual, but to make up for it they're doing 5 regionals in a single weekend, including the Dallas, Houston, and Avon regionals. Dallas and Avon will be streamed on FloMarching. Alas, to my knowledge, none of the local Texas circuit competitions are being streamed.
I won't be attending anything, so I'll be waiting for the YouTube videos to drop. Some of the locals here will have to keep me in-the-know!

Well, not to add fuel to the fire, but Richard’s son is in Fishers band.
But I guess we should “give it a rest” and ignore what is arguably the biggest conflict of interest in the marching arts.
for what it’s worth, WGI has an excellent conflict of interest policy. BOA does not. Why can we do the same?

FYI, Richard Saucedo was in the Judge’s Suite most of the weekend. Sitting right behind the same judges who were judging 3 of his bands that made finals: Carmel, Fishers, and Brownsburg.
Yes, that’s incredibly weird and wildly unprofessional. Conflict of interest??
And no—no other designer or band director would be allowed in that suite. They’d probably get a penalty for even trying.
The fact he’s involved in BOA judging in any way is just wild. He needs to either stop designing/consulting for BOA groups, or resign from BOA as a chief judge.
Goodluck to all groups tonight!!

We've all had this internal monologue at some point or another, lol. But at the end of the day, Carmel is just that good.

Thanks, Box5, for the commercials at the beginning of Vandegrift! I predict a complete failure like last year during the Grand Nationals. They just do not care.

clarinote reacted to GeekBoy54 in 2023 BOA San Antonio Super Regional (Nov. 3 & 4)
No, that's not what happened. There was major flooding in the Austin-Metro area during BOA San Antonio 2015 which forced a couple of bands (Leander, Dripping Springs, Hendrickson) to drop out of the contest because Music for All couldn't fit a rescheduled time for them in the schedule. I'm still mad about that because Leander really could've won the whole thing if the weather didn't happen.
