  1. I love bands going to BOA their first year! Excited to see what Hays Johnson is up to.
  2. As soon as I was told, I honestly wish I had never asked.
  3. Leander was 4th in 2017, albeit barely.
  4. I found the point about GPAs and class ranks to be really interesting. That pressure was definitely present when I was in high school, but I fought through it because I knew band was worth it for me. Now that I do alumni interviewing for my "Very Prestigious Private School"TM, the candidates that I find most interesting and have the most success in elite admissions are quite often in athletics or band or dance or other classes that prevent them from doing an AP course instead. And at the end of the day, dropping band my junior and senior year probably would have saved me just a rank or two when I graduated--not nearly big enough a difference compared to what people consider. And people really, really do respect the work to takes it be in band--especially if they know how competitive band is in Texas suburban schools. Additionally, those time management skills came in handy in undergrad and now in grad school. Basically - STAY IN BAND.
  5. LOVING Cypress Falls’ theme and musical selections. Hoping they have a great year!
  6. Yes! This is the right attitude. End of the day on the 9th. No earlier, no later.
  7. The storylines are half the fun!
  8. Austin is kind of boring since you can count on at least eight repeats. Houston is much more exciting because the race into finals is a lot more unpredictable.
  9. The musical selections are totally different, but I love this programming. Can't wait to hear what they do!
  10. Hungover but worth it! #GoHoos!!!
  11. Avon's score is the highest in their class, but I actually do not think it's even in the highest ten scores overall. It's certainly not in the top five. ETA: Did some research. If it's correct, Avon's score actually sits sixth.
  12. A new school has the option to just multiply its size to find its four class total if it chooses to. Bridgeland likely did just that.
  13. Also travel costs would go up dramatically on all accounts. Gas, plane tickets, hotel costs. It would start getting unfeasible in terms of logistics too.
  14. Bridgeland is already in 6A.
  15. Thanksgiving week would be absolutely horrendous for GN and band attendance.
  16. That wasn’t the example I thought of. I personally thought that could have gone either way, although I much preferred one of those shows to the other.
  17. On the margins I think that’s how it works, but for 5A and 6A I personally think that visual scores recently, barring one anomalous medal, have tracked pretty well with cleanliness in general, for the most part disregarding difficulty.
  18. There's no real incentive to take on more difficult drill for a UIL year. If anything, there's incentive to take on more difficult drill for BOA.
  19. I’m trying to understand why the shift. Many of the bands in Region 18 regularly took advantage of the extra performance weekend. Too bad.
  20. They’re all grades now.
  21. All the Austin schools have UIL on Saturday now, so barring any impressive schedule rigging, that should make the hunt for finals much, much easier here.
