I saw a video on the tube of Leander (from behind) last night, and holy cow here they come

And that video is from the back! I filmed it from the front myself but am holding off publicly sharing that one for now. I’m so impressed though. They are not messing around this year.

I definitely can’t wait until you do decide to share that video, I love Leander. I totally didn’t think they deserved 14th place. The score they produced in prelims of SA last year would have had them in the top 5 on 2016. That’s just the band world we live in today. I wish y’all good luck this year!

I know of another band very nearby of which the same can be said. I think some people are going to be surprised. :-)

I think we are going to have a stronger music GE program this year. Execution is the question, as we have a large freshman class, but we did lose some, ummm, personality challenges. The new class has come in and they've worked hard with a very good attitude. I've had the opportunity to see and hear the first 3 parts of our show during practice, and there is significant potential (and some realized potential too). The show is also more accessible to the general audience I think, as I know many people were confused by last year's show.

That’s litterally the exact same thing with my band, but the execution is coming along really fast now. All we need is for the freshmen to get used to the turf and I think after last night they will be fine, and all we can do now is work to fulfill our potential. Our goal is to not only have an amazing season but to do something our band has never done, which is make area finals. I’m really proud of how hard this year’s group is working, and only time will tell how good we can be this year. Good luck with y’all this season, and let there be no hurricane to wreck your lives this year. Y’all are amazing.

Thank you. Best of luck to you as well - I'll certainly be keeping an eye on how you are progressing over the season. Texas 6A is fiendishly difficult to compete in, and I don't think there will be any let-down after last year set such a high bar. BOA scores may be a little lower due to UIL focus (maybe), but the depth and outstanding shows will do nothing but grow.

Looks like someone put the Leander show up already. Vandergrift’s is online too. Vandy sounds good and from what I could see of the visual looked good as well. A bit Blair-witchy on the photography and a lot of attention on the pit.

Also videos of Cedar Park and Coppell

Some thoughts :

Vandegrift : Very great and challenging show design that will have a huge payoff at the end of the season. Love the music. The drill (from what I can see) looks pretty cool and challenging. The pre-show is cool and the overall show is different from what they’ve done before so I’m excited about that.

Leander : obviously can’t tell much but they definitely are out for blood this year. Not a huge fan of their prop design as it can look messy but as far as I can tell they sound really great. The pacing loses me in the solo section a bit but I like what I see so far.

Cedar Park: The opening was absolutely fantastic and then it loses me. They usually start off messy and grow tremendously so I’m not worried. What I will say is that performing that well in August in full uniform is no easy feat. Some of the design felt pretty generic idk it will grow on me a lot. I want to hear more exposed playing from different sections, everything they played seemed like full band for the most part. Gorgeous solos.

Coppell : Pleasantly surprised. Seems like they’ll achieve success akin to 2016 and they’ll probably be even better. They are really moving. Man that band is huge :).

All of these bands seem to be very good this year! Can’t wait to see them down the line!

I couldn't really hear Coppell or Leander. (Maybe I had the wrong video) and never found the full video of CP.

Found a video of James Martin. Interesting stuff there. There are some good things happening for sure but they definitely have lots of room for improvement. I'm not counting them out of finals contention in Area B. I couldn't tell what it is, but there is some sort of string instrument solo in their show. Viola maybe? Someone who knows better should correct me. Very unusual.

Yeah both the Leander and Coppell videos are from the back that I saw.

There was very briefly a video of Vista’s competitive show (don’t know where it went), and it definitely appears to be a very different vehicle from their standard. It’ll be interesting to see how it weaves together with the theme, but the music has some potentially fantastic moments.

I’m sticking by my statement that I think Vandy medals and will have a legitimate shot at gold this year. I’ll hold off judgement on Leander until there’s a front video.

The video of the competitive show was taken down at the directors' request. And I think people are going to see something really different from Vista this year.

The Leander video on YouTube from Thursday night is from the back side. The other video up is one from the parent performance several weeks ago. I’m not seeing one online yet from the home side but maybe I missed it.

I’ll have to look for the Vandy video. I’m sure they hope to continue their ride of success from last year.

Would like to have seen it from home grandstands. Sounds good. Did you happen to catch Weiss' performance? Curious to see how the have grown.

Oh yes, I definitely saw Weiss. They are much bigger this year and sounding great already. They are still using their school’s dance team rather than having a color guard but there are a LOT more of them this year, so it looks lovely on the field.

I looked up “Vandegrift band 2018” and the title is “August 31, 2018”
