  1. I don't know how to do it and I personally don't care to...but good luck to you guys who are trying to do it!
  2. It is...since my last post on this topic, I learned how to play a high A..actually, I was forced to play it, thanks to the "Elegy for a Young American" song we got not too long ago. But I still sound horrible on that note
  3. I use Vandoren V12's, 3.5...but that's after I refused to use the basic Vandorens again (too weak!) and after I realized that Rue Lepic's are available on an 'order-only' basis after traveling all the way to Friendswood (about 45 mins away) where they happened to have a box lying around during Thanksgiving break. I've since realized that once you go to Rue Lepics, there's no going back. I'm hoping my friend can snag some from the All-State convention though, lol
  4. My solo: Sonate Nr. 3 by Brahms Ensemble: J.S. Bach and Sons' 4 movements (I'm not sure if the actual ensemble has a name-we just call it the Bach Ensemble)
  5. We just got that in band not long ago...I <33333d it. It gave me chills the first time we played it. I don't think my BD will use it for UIL but if he doesn't play it for spring concert (at least!) I'll be very disappointed
  6. Hm, this is kind of an update to my post.....my school (Channelview) did get moved up to a 5A..it was announced in school yesterday when I was home sick. What a bummer (like you guys care, lol)
  7. Well, I think it's an awesome idea to have a thread for people who didn't make it! I've made district and region for 2 years and area for 3--I know that sound weird but 4A's in my region have a separate tryout to advance to area because not enough 4As make region band---but I've never made All-State! I always have a bad audition at these things. Anyway, the bad part is, my school's probably going to be a 5A next year which means I'd have to be in the TOP of my region band to even get my 4th year of Area next year. I made it at 41st out of 51 this year. So basically, my chances of ever making it are very, very bleak
  8. I pretty much had to choose between band camp (I was looking at the UT one, I think, last winter) and Student Council camp....I chose StuCo because I'm VP and I needed to be there. It was great though!
  9. I'm thinking of Sam Houston State or UT-Austin...I'm leaning toward UT, but it really depends on how many scholarships I get
  10. Me>You>Superbowl Just kidding...but I don't watch it anyway-I don't like football much
  11. Iono..I've been kind of thinking something along history..maybe law? or teaching? I'm not too sure, but I know I want to minor in music performance But yes, Toys 'R Us kid is my first choice
  12. If you want my opinion (which it really doesnt matter cuz you're getting it anyway, lol), it IS necessary to have a slow movement. The slow movement is the movement that makes the show a real show! Not to mention that, in my clarinet instructors words, it separates the meat from the potatoes in the competiton. That and the slow movements give us a break from the fast-paced opener before the fast-paced closer. At least, that's how it's been since I've gotten to high school
  13. I hope the Houston Texans take him....sorry guys, but we need some serious help! This might sound really dumb, but I dont know anything about football....why can't the Texans take both Reggie Bush AND Vince Young?
  14. You guys may think I'm lame, but I think "Minimally Speaking" was a difficult show for our band, mainly because of the sets..we had a lot of meshes that were difficult and one clarinet slide that was just...horrible...for us in the front. As for the lamest, I'd have to say this year, just because the sets were way easy and so was the music. If we would have played "Ruslan and Ludmilla" (the 3rd movement..embarassingly, we only played 2), it would have been better...but only a select few could handle the ridiculously long 16th note runs
  15. Yeah, I know what you mean...my 3rd year at Area and I didnt advance...it's a horrible feeling, and I'm still down in the dumps
  16. The highest note I can get to without thinking about it is high G..I think it's the highest G in there, but don't mark my words. And yep, high clarinets that are out of tune are the worst..I know from personal experience
  17. Degrassi: The Next Generation owns...so does SNL. And I totally agree with the Andy Milonakis show being stupid. I tried to watch an episode and didn't even get through 5 minutes without changing the channel. It's STUPID! Almost as stupid as Napoleon Dynamite..
  18. Ruslan and Ludmilla was one of our pieces for marching season (we got delayed by Rita so we didn't get to play it)...it was REALLY challenging in my section--only 3 of us (2 seniors and me) could play it in tempo when we actually got to work it out. I wish we could play the concert band version. That would be fun!
  19. When you're so bored after 4A Pre-Area tryouts that people from your band (including yourself) combine with kids from your rival school in football and play stuff from marching and concert season! Yep, that was kind of fun...
  20. Wow...you guys have less clarinets marching than we have in 1st band alone! There are 8 of us in 1st band and like 9 in 2nd. What class is your school? We're 4A
  21. Well, lets see...Even though our head band director can be a huge jerk during marching practice (he tends to get in a horrible mood during), he's a cool person to talk to. It turns out that he IS human and all of us applied music kids who get the chance to talk to him have stuff in common with him. He's cool during sectionals..I guess the mood's lighter than a full band rehearsal. Oh, and he gives me solos for concert season AND made me section leader for marching season, so I can't complain . Our new assistant band director comes all the way from Colorado! He's younger (I heard he was like, 28??) so that makes it easier to talk to him. He's also breaking the head BD's patterns (he tends to do the same things over and over and over) and he called a section leader meeting at the end of summer band which totally shocked me, and from what I've heard, he's the reason for the easier transition into a hard set (for my section anyway) and for the visual we had at the end of the season. Only thing I don't like about him-THE BLOCK! He brought a block and a drumstick out to practice one day and decided that he would beat the block to use as a metronome. Did i also mention that he tends to get it by everyones ears and it's LOUD!? Uh-huh..I know from personal experience.
  22. Ditto! After January 7..well,let's just say music + fire = FUN! Just kidding..I'll probably save it and put it somewhere
  23. We haven't even gotten sleet yet..
  24. 9th and 10th grade (for me): -midterms in December, before Christmas break -9th can exempt 2 classes a semester , 10th can exempt 3 classes, 11th can exempt 4 (lower 3 grades: not the same class both semesters), 12th could exempt all both semesters -No more than 3 absences in a class, no unexcused absences, must be passing with an 80, I think -9th grade year: Not required to come to class when exempted -10th grade year: Must show up to school, but will be in a holding room instead (BORING!) -Half days last 3 days of both semesters: 2 exams taken 2 hours each, since school was only 4 hours long. No lunch served -Ended school last Thursday of May This year (11th: Also known as the HORRIBLE schedule): -midterms in January (we started school August 22 I believe, so it bumped us down..) -9th and 10th can't exempt ANY, 11th can exempt 2 and 12th can exempt 3 (9, 10 &11-not same class both semesters) -All students must show up AND take the exam: if the grade helps, it will be counted but if not, it will not be counted -No more than 3 absences in a class, no unexcused absences, must be passing with an 80 (I think that's the only thing that didn't change) -No half days for midterms (Usually, when we had the test during the last week of Christmas break, we'd have 3 half days marking the end of the semester. Now, since we don't have midterms during that time, we didnt get half days last week AND we don't have them in January either...grr!) -Students are not allowed to leave the classroom within the 2.5 hour exams to go to the bathroom -In between exams will be lunch/advisory period, which is 4th period class (luckily I have band, so we'll just practice: I can't say the same for kids who have like, English or something..) -End school June 1, 2006 (At least we get half days for the end-of-year exams...)
  25. We did too..apparently, the closer you were to the Gulf, the more snow you had last Christmas. It didn't stick to the ground, but there was enough snow to make mini-snowmen and have a snowball fight at midnight Ahh, good memories. if it isn't gonna snow (fat chance in Houston again!), the weather needs to hurry up and get warmer cuz I miss my flip-flops...
