I’m so excited to get back to Austin this weekend so that I can attend this contest! If you are on the fence about going, just do it! Everyone really needs to experience the Texas Marching Classic, and this year is just looking spectacular. The competition itself is a blast because it has that old timey festival feel to it. You can buy a shoutout for your favorite marcher and have it broadcast over the stadium, there’s some really great food to partake in, oh and yeah, the bands are just incredible! This year the contest will feature your current Grand National champions going to bat against your current top ranked band in the country. And if a Vandegrift vs Ronald Reagan contest doesn’t get you excited (because you’re dead??), there’s Claudia Taylor Johnson to consider for the TMC championship this year. Also attending are 5 more BOA Austin finalists from a few weeks ago, Cedar Park, Rouse, Leander, Bowie and Weiss. Will Rouse overtake Cedar Park and Leander again, or will there be a switch up in the LISD order? There will be other great bands attending from all over the surrounding area as well, but the band traveling the furthest for this fantastic showdown is your current United ISD Marching Festival champions (and 2019 BOA McAllen champs), the John B. Alexander high school marching band! Yes, I’m super excited about that as many of you probably know. I am pulling for JBA to make finals this Saturday!!! And If you want to be guaranteed to see an amazing band from the Valley, be at Kelly Reeves stadium in your seats before 4 pm!!!
Come out to Kelly Reeves this Saturday for one of the hottest competitions in country this season! And I don’t mean the temperatures.
They need to pay you for advertising…

We like the football too! I’ll admit in don’t follow the rankings for the Highschool team very closely. We’ve had some losses, but also had lots of wins, so it just depends on how well we play out the season.
I follow the college football more than the Highschool, but we definitely enjoy the Hs games as well as the halftime!

I've got my fingers crossed! They were really great in 2019. I am a bit concerned if more than half of the band has never marched, but I feel like that's a position a lot of groups are in this year, so maybe it won't be that much of a setback.
Klein Oak is definitely producing some very nice sounds in that first football game performance vid. I can see them in finals for sure. I just don't know where, because I haven't really seen enough groups.
Btw, just watched the most recent (mostly crappy field-level) vid of TWHS. Yeah, it's a great show, but those costumes... lol... I just can't. I'm sorry. It's like a double whammy with the guard outfits. They don't read Cabaret at all. But they are weirdly mesmerizing to look at from high up. When that side 1 brass block assembles in the first movement, it was fascinating, the way the costumes kind of play with each other when mixed like that.
Also surprised that they don't have more on the field. Seems cleaner than 2 weeks ago, but not much has been added, unless they're saving more for Saturday. Really need to see it from higher up.
“Really need to see it from higher up.”
yes, and yes. ?
Editing to add: kidding aside, Cabaret is mostly thought of as a more seedy night club entertainment… but it can also just be entertainment…. As a parent I’m glad it’s themed as bright and cheerful and happy entertainment- with no worries of inappropriate costuming for these teenagers.

I only have the last 4 seasons of knowledge since that’s when my daughter became involved with guard at mccullough, but in the 2018-19 school year is when they started having a color guard pe class, instead of it just being an after school club. When it was an after school club they averaged around 60 girls trying out the year my daughter tried out for 7th grade. The next year when they opened it up for a pe credit- I think they had around 75 girls try out. The following years have had increasingly more- this last year I think it was over 100 that tried out. This year is the first year they’ve had three groups- varsity, Jv, and spin club. I think varsity and Jv have the pe class and spin club is just after school- but I’m not positive. A Twhs guard alumni from 2018 is heavily involved with the mccullough program and helps teach skills and I believe was given the opportunity to direct the spin club. (Twhs readers... speak up if I’m wrong! Lol!)
I do believe the big jump in skill level came from having that pe class. The girls went from having two 90 min after school practices a week- to having 3+ hours of class time (a/b alternating days schedule) in addition to after school practices. Most of the class time is just the faculty teacher/coach (Ms Danney- who has gotten married and I don’t know her new married name) who has a great dance background and I think works a lot with the girls on the dance and movement choreography and I think Ms Robbins works with her on what to teach during class time... Ms Robbins attends and runs their after school practices twice a week. Between the Highschool guards and mccullough she is with the Hs classes everyday and every afternoon has a practice with one group or another. (At 3 different locations through the week). She is amazing keeping it all straight!- TWHSPercDad, LeanderMomma and Rubisco

I don't typically watch Junior High shows, because usually the skills in them are very rudimentary and the compositions are very basic -- at least in Texas. The goal seems to be teaching the kiddos basic movement and how to hold the flags and rifles and do some very basic phrases with them -- with rare tosses here and there that don't get very much height.
So, I really wasn't prepared for McCullough Junior High's show, Don't Kill My Vibe. My expectations were way too low. I'm still picking my jaw up off of the floor. Who is teaching this group?! There's something like 30 girls on that red floor dressed up like Rosie the Riveter from J. Howard Miller's classic "We Can Do It!" poster, and they are pretty cleanly executing skills that you see from high school varsity groups. Like, when did this group get this good? Has it been like this for years? I feel very ignorant right now. I mean, we're talking, like, full-group 3+ rifle tosses with confident, clean catches, some of them one-handed catches that transition immediately into another skill. Wow! And the composition is beautiful as well. Simple, yes, but elegant, with some real contour to match the rise and fall of the music. This is without question the best junior program of semis A (although Badger MS was also impressive). Is this what top feeder programs are supposed to look like?! Bravo!
Mccullough jr high is the feeder school for The Woodlands Highschool. They have a wonderful teacher (she teaches math the rest of the day) that teaches them during their class time who has a great dance background and works with them on choreography a lot. The Twhs guard director - Ms Robbins goes in and directs their practices and designed the Jv and varsity group programs. Just this last week Ms Robbins had a directors spotlight done on her on the tcgc Facebook/Instagram.
The program has been gradually building the last few years as they were able to get a class approved for a pe credit at the school. We had the same jaw dropping reaction when we saw them and their skills in person for the first time this year.- LeanderMomma, Rubisco and TWHSPercDad

I’ve enjoyed getting to watch the wgi shows on the weekends. Normally chaperoning I only get to watch our show- so it’s great to see so many shows each weekend on Flo. Miss the in person wgi events, but am glad we get a small version of in person with the tcgc local circuit.

This was just posted on our band's facebook page- but it is important for all of texas. As always... read the bill and decide for yourself, but I do believe this could have detrimental effects down the line with funding to the fine arts programs.
Parents, Teachers & Supporters of Fine Arts in Texas!!
**This is an URGENT CALL TO ACTION**We have learned that the Texas State legislature will be voting on BILL HB434 **tomorrow (Tuesday)** which can effectively remove the requirement for schools to require a Fine Arts credit for graduation. This would be catastrophic for fine arts programs in CISD and across the state of Texas.Urgent! We need all parents, teachers, and supporters of Fine Arts to email and/or call to voice their opinions ASAP since the legislative session begins Tuesday.Bill HB 434 would effectively not make a Fine Art credit a requirement for HS graduation (by alllowing substitutions). Removing this requirement insinuates further issues for support in terms of funding, staffing, everything... Every student should have the opportunity to benefit from a fine arts course! Please help us by communicating with your legislators about why this is a bad idea.If you use the link below, there is already a pre written email to send. It takes less than a minute. The video linked below is a call-to-action for parents, boosters, etc.SEND AN EMAIL (pre-written):Call-to-action:Read the bill: -

I know this is mostly “preaching to the choir” here since most all parents that have found this forum already are aware of the benefits of band and our kids and their learning. But I came across this article, and I thought it was great and shows even more benefits of marching band that aren’t traditionally pointed out
-
All I can see is that results won’t be released till Tuesday the 21st. No news from our band yet.
-
-
Possibly? Not sure though. But the pit only has 5/6 kids in it... so that stands out to me vs the larger pit I’m used to seeing. It’s so hard to figure out how many they have short of counting... and it just feel’s smaller than last year.
-
I thought oak ridge was great- but looks significantly smaller than they’ve been in the past few years. Since I haven’t seen anyone other than our area I can’t even begin to guess where they might rank. They still have a great sound and their color guard complements the show a lot.
-
-
Twhs will do a one day trip. Those whose parents can drive them out will go with parents. Busses will be taken, with smaller numbers of students and masks worn for those that need busses. For area we averaged 10 kids per school bus. 8 busses- the rest went with parents.
Honestly the fact that it’s the first day of finals and will cause them to have to take them late - and study and take finals the next day- might be causing more headaches for some parents/kids than the transportation to get out there.
-
Area f has all advance ticket sales- none at the gate. I think each band was slotted 350 tickets... so 350x4- 1400 as the max I guess?
-
I'm sorry it's taken me this long to reply to this. I understand your frustration as a parent, wanting to find the best possible solution to allow her to still participate in something she loves so much. I wonder if there might be some way for her to help with the band/color guard as some sort of student assistant, that allows her still to have the interaction and being part of the program, but allows more flexibility for her specific needs? I would agree that keeping the port dry at all times would be difficult. I do know there was a girl with diabeties on our color guard a few years back that had an insulin pump. They had to be careful with her, but she was able to participate and compete at the highest levels. They just had to do a little more planning and making sure she had the right emergency foods around if needed. I would say that the decision for your daughter needs to be talked through with the director/color guard director and you and your daugher and probably some sort of medical professional..(there may be some product that is available that would help keep the port clean- or not) , One think I've realized with parenting teens... i have to keep from having knee jerk reactions and be able to calmly list the step by step process of how and where my decision came from- when I have to give them bad news and not let them do something they want to do- that would under normal circumstances be ok.
good luck!

I've added BOA Conroe to the list despite there being no confirmed bands as of yet. For those who don't know, here's the TL;DR:
On College Park's band calendar, they have the following contests listed:
This appears to be MFA's response to BOA Houston always getting far over capacity. They've had a few ideas (such as Friday performances, simultaneous venues, etc.), but they seem to have chose the consecutive weekends contest route. While MFA has not officially announced it, I have confirmation from a student at College Park that this will be it's own BOA contest the same day as BOA Austin.
While there are no confirmed participants, here are a few bands that will more than likely not switch from Katy due to contest scheduling: The Woodlands, College Park, Westwood, Westlake, Clear Brook, Clear Creek, Dawson, Friendswood, Pearland, and Porter.
College park won’t switch since it’s their homecoming dance that night- and on their schedule they specifically state there will be no performance.
The Woodlands have a football game that day, so I can’t see them switching- they already will be missing a game for BOA San Antonio- I cant see them missing two games.
Oakridge may switch, The Klein schools are pretty much halfway between the two sites- so it probably depends on football schedules for them.

Hey how’s the parking situation around the dome? We heard about park of the parking lot being used for a Covid vaccine site, and didn’t know how much that affected parking availability.
