  1. Not a huge fan of the stadium. I know large blocks of people were going in and out as chaperones... and that’s understandable, but I wish they had ushers stopping people during performances... also the Concourse area is so crowded because they aren’t allowed to use the concessions booths- and have to set up concessions in the walkway...

And it’s hot... so hot that I couldn’t video my kids- because my phone shut off because it was overheating...

But I loved watching the bands I got to watch. I loved oak ridges music, and Klein (something) with the trains was lots of fun. I was with others and have a hard time keeping track of who I’m watching so can’t give specifics... and had to leave to take care of some uniform stuff and then get back to our town to work a concessions booth for the band tonight... I wish I could have stayed and watched finals tonight and seen Reagan.

  2. Grand Oaks band director- Mr Flake has kids that have been in our TWHS band. His daughter was our head drum major last year, and he was a private lesson teacher for many of our wind ensemble (top band) clarinet students for many years. We are all excited to see what their band becomes as the school grows and they get all the grades at the school. They also took our former pit director to be their percussion director.

I think they will most definitely be an up and coming band once they get all grades in place.

  3. Cool to know!  We will probably go back there and eat at least once again for old times sake.  Plus it was really good!

Our condo is on the East side of the big circle fountain (the Soldiers and Sailors Monument) so I will probably head towards the Circle Centre Mall and walk through there.  I believe they have a connection to the convention center as well?  I'll look more as it gets closer.  But now if it's too cold, I'm just going to Uber to LOS every time!  I like a brisk walk but I ain't about that WIND CHILL!

Yep they all connect together... the only time we really needed our coats was when we walked the band (with props) outside from the back of the convention center around to the stadium... that was cold!

  4. Mother Nature is still giving us speed bumps... our stadium rehearsal was moved from last Tuesday to Thursday, because of rescheduling from the storm- and then we spent more time under the bleachers than on the field I think because of lighting in the area last night.

  5. So I didn't witness this, but one of our band medics had to step in to help. At a contest to remain nameless, there are these holes, I'm assuming for posts, in the concrete on the parking lot probably to block traffic when needed. That day, the holes were open. A band was marching ahead of ours, and not seeing the danger, a girl's foot went down a hole. Let's just say immediate, serious first aid and an ambulance was needed. :o

Ouch! My foot hurts just thinking about it! :(

  6. Ha! BYU Alumni too! (Well I went... didn’t graduate, but hubby did!)

I never did band... I was a choir person. Somehow none of my kids like to sing and they all have gone the band or band/guard route.

Coincidentally a friend who’s son was in band here is at BYU in the band now and she was telling me how he was having a hard time dealing with marching band there- the technique is so much more lax than he’s used to.

My one band child in college did a week of marching band where she is going to school and dropped it because it just didn’t hold up to the level she had done in Highschool.

  7. For those of you whose kiddos are going to grand nats this year, will the kids fly or bus out there?

Charter flight. 2 flights. It’s the only way we can book that large of a group out there. From what I’ve been told- we are only allowed to have the kids to miss 2 days of school for the trip- so there’s no way we could bus out and make it out in time to perform and get back and only miss 2 days.

  8. Of course I would love to predict TWHS takes the #1 spot. We shall see, traditionally we are in it for the long haul and to peak late- so we do our best but haven’t won while I’ve been around. If we can get a full week of practices in without loosing time to rain I’m excited to see where they will have it on Saturday. I’ll be there for prelims- but ironically to support the band concessions program- I’ll have to miss the evening part and go work a concessions booth for a rock concert... to help parents earn money they can put towards those band fee’s... because we aren’t all independently wealthy here either.

  9. We used to go to competitions with Yukon/Mustang... its been about 4 years ago- but they had a great sounding brass back then. I’m not educated enough in the nuances of what the judges listen for- but they were definitely in the upward trend of the Oklahoma bands trying to climb up to be competitive with broken arrow and the other top oklahoma bands. It’s neat to see them in the line up here.

  10. I saw a picture of a Houston school with flooding in the halls. Wasn't sure which school it was. :(

Can you guys make up some practice time on the weekend? I'm so sorry this keeps happening to TWHS and other area Houston schools!

I’m sure that was a more south/east school. They got slammed so bad... I’ve been engrossed in a project and haven’t really watched the news... just dealt with our own schedule changes. We’ll be fine. For us it’s a “speed bump” they’ll make up most of the time today and can always practice tomorrow if needed- they are just trying to let us still have our rare Saturday off without having to stick a practice in.

  11. We’ve heard Conroe Highschool had water in it- I don’t know to what extent. Candy Creek Highschool we’ve been told will not have classes Monday- so I’m guessing they have damage- but again I don’t know to what extent. I know a lot of the south east areas really won’t know the depth of damage until the rain stops. We had a dry morning, but have rain again this afternoon. School was out, but the football game tonight is still on. The band is trying to make up some practice time they lost by meeting early, but it’ll probably be mostly inside practice due to the rain.
