  1. I actually enjoyed Cy-Fair's show and preferred it over Bowie's, to be honest. I felt the props in Bowie's actually took away from the performance instead of adding to it. It seemed like they struggled to keep all the inflatable things in place and limited where they marched. Cy-Fair's drill seems challenging to me, but I'm not a judge so what do I know lol :P

I honestly was so distracted by Bowie’s props and trying to figure out what they were- that I have no idea what their music or marching was like... it completely derailed me from paying attention to the performance at all.

  2. Ok.... so I'm just barely getting a chance to sit down at a computer where I can actually type things out instead of on my phone... (sorry my hubby say's I can get long winded?)

I feel like even though I've had kids in band for 6 years now, I'm just now starting to catch the bug to try and figure out what makes the difference between the good bands and the ones that are on the bubble and can't quite get to finals.  When we lived in Oklahoma- we were in a band that couldn't quite get to finals very often, but now with TWHS it's kind of the opposite.  I didn't get a chance to watch all the bands at Conroe because I was chaperoning the band kids, but the ones I watched- while I could see some were higher in quality than others, I can't distinguish between the lower half of the bands that got into finals and the top 3-4 bands that fell below that #10 spot.

Admittedly I'm bias'd a little bit since they are another local school- but what was it that kept College Park from scoring better?  Is their program just not technically difficult enough to pull off a higher score?  Do I just not have the "ears" to notice the difference in the difficultly or not of the music they played?  I really enjoyed their program but know I don't know enough to understand the breakdowns much.

  3. Just saw this-

  4. Found this site in our first year experiencing TX bands- 2016, and lurked through the last two years- and decided to finally jump in and make an account earlier this year after traveling with the band to Indy last year.  I'm still trying to learn the in's and out's of scoring.  It's my 6th year of having a child in marching band... 3 years in OK and now this is our 3rd year in TX, with another 4 years to go.  Maybe by the time our youngest is a senior I'll feel like I can make comments more educated than- that was amazing!   :D

  5. Since you mentioned that, I just checked my email too. I had also copied the Superintendent, so I received the response from both of them about the meeting on Monday. So it will be interesting what comes out.

FYI, we are pit parents, and he is a senior this year. He had to skip finals at this contest in 2015 for the same reason, and did not want to repeat that this time, especially now that he knows what these contests mean.

Ah... the pit parents...  :)  I usually travel with the chaperone crew. lol! :)  2015 was right before we moved here

  6. On the ghosting posts, you'll find that the people behind those very much understand the situation and the unfairness. They aren't truly advocating that anything like that happens (including me). And out of that set of posts, I did learn a new phrase "pickle squirts". That had me rolling.

I don't have any contacts with local colleges/universities. U of Houston is doing an exhibition at BOA Conroe - don't know if they could be persuaded to stop in at Klein Memorial Stadium on their way back to campus? Or would one of our other CISD bands be available? How about Grand Oaks? The percussion director there was with TWHS last year. College Park, Oak Ridge, and Conroe are all at the BOA contest. If they don't make finals, could they be a possibility?

Yes... I figured as much... I'm just one of those- "make sure" people.  lol!  and Pickle Squirts... well if I hear that as I'm walking through the crowd I guess I'll know who you are...  :)

I was emailed back this morning from my email I sent to the principal yesterday.  He shared that he will be meeting with the Band Directors and Band Leadership on Monday.  I emailed him back thanking him for taking the time to read and reply to my email- and asking him to please go into the meeting with an open mind towards non traditional solutions that would allow all the students to participate fully that day.  We shall see what plays out.

  7. Another TWHS parent here. Thank you for any who are willing to send letters and help us raise awareness to the unfairness of this. Another parent suggested in a Facebook post that we could reach out to the local colleges and see if one of their bands might play the football game pep band for us. Does anyone here have any contacts in the Houston area colleges?

I’m not an advocate of the band ghosting the football game- we have been telling our kids that their job is to go to the events that Perez states on the schedule- and do their best and have fun and work hard- it’s the parents who will work separately to try and change this for this year and future years.
