Yesterday was a great competition. McCallum didn't make state, and LASA did surprisingly well. The LASA synth didn't work in the prelims, but they were still ranked 5th. It looked like they were going to pull off an upset if they had a clean performance and they got their synth working for finals. In the finals, they had no functioning tech at all, their incredible oboe soloist wasn't mic-ed, and you couldn't hear their narrator. Devastating for those kids. It seems AISD schools can't catch a break. I don't know enough about UIL judging but it seems like if not for the tech issues, they would be headed to the Alamodome or was it more than that?
McCallum's show was better than the last two seasons and I thought they had it in the bag. I can't quite put my finger on what didn't work for them this year. It seems their style just doesn't appeal to UIL judges? Hendrickson and Lake Belton were incredible! Loved that LB put in such a strong performance with no props.I don't think the technical issues played a huge part in the finals results. They don't really look the narration at all either way. And the same thing for McCallum, it's not that they weren't good or were lacking anything substantial, it's just that some schools just played or moved better. After seeing all of the shows, the 5 that advanced made sense and were good and had a lot of challenging things in their show

Imagine a world where USBands posted their prelims results AND kept them up as well as captions so I don't have to stumble across the captions on a random band's Facebook

Ok y'all I've got the final ripple counter for Leander. At finals they clocked in at about 83 ripples that I counted in the band. It would absolutely be over 100 if I were able to count guard at the same time.

That point gap seems too big, rouse beat vandegrift at austin
Vandegrift won Austin prelims by almost a point and a half. Bands change week to week with how much improvement they do and how much they add so it makes sense
-
Holy cow that bottom 4 was cutthroat. I heard Anderson was half a point out of finals, but that being the gap between 12th and 15th is insane. Top to bottom this was probably the best contest I've seen and been to. No band was bad and every single group had a good shot at finals

Fun fact: I counted an upwards of around 65 ripples in Leander's show last night. It was around 47 at BOA Austin

The finals bubble is gonna be insane on this if there's 15 bands and 12 finalists
-
I find it interesting that I've been noticing more contests splitting finals by top half and bottom half. Has this been a thing for a while or have I just started to notice it more?

anyone know the prelim awards?

Can you mail one to San Antonio?

Just thought everyone here would like this and find it interesting
Genesis recently announced that they will be doing a smaller tour around Texas from June 23rd-July 13th before starting the official DCI tour in Denver. The main reason behind this is to "give back to the communities that have given so much to us" and I am all for it. Stops include Sharyland, San Benito, Corpus Christi, Houston, Brenham, Smithville, Oklahoma City, OK; and Garden City, KS. I personally am very excited to travel to many areas that don't get drum corps anywhere close to them to work with and perform for all the kids that have to drive hours just to see the nearest drum corps show. Finals Results:
1st: 96.90 - Moe & Gene Johnson HS (Caption sweep)
2nd: 94.80 - Liberal Arts & Science Academy
3rd: 93.70 - William J. Brennan HS
4th: 93.00 - Anderson HS
5th: 91.60 - George Ranch HS
6th: 89.50 - John Marshall HS
7th: 89.00 - East View HS
8th: 86.90 - W. Charles Akins HS
9th: 84.90 - Lehman HS
10th: 83.70 - Pieper HS
11th: 82.00 - Samuel V. Champion HS
12th: 78.30 - Louise HSThe only difference in placements in prelims for those 12 was that John Marshall and East View were switched since finals schedule is in prelims score order.
The website had the prelims results but they took them down and put up finals. After a whole season of them not posting finals results they decide to get rid of the prelims results after I had gotten a person to write down finals scores at the event. I thought the new ownership would help improve USBands but they are still awful at posting results to nobody's surprise

Hi band parents/boosters - I have a question for you. Our 5A band is one of the only ones I've seen that does not have a semi/trailer truck for props, equipment, etc. We have three small UPS sized trucks that we own, and they aren't ideal for large props, instrument storage, etc. Does anyone have experience buying/renting/getting a semi/trailer for your band? If so, I'd love advice on where to start for our band to try to get a vehicle like that.
Thanks for any insights you may have. Our district funding is limited, so we'll likely have to raise funds or figure out a funding model.
So my old high school recently got a new trailer and I don't have all the details but they've been saving up money for it for years as well as some fundraising and grants. The company they got it from customized it and everything, super good product. I even helped assemble it when they brought it over. Typically even with this big trailer, they still have a box truck separate for props. I can ask for more specific answers to your questions if you'd like

Really surprised at LASA making finals, especially on their first year on their own. That's really good for them!

I’m 100% all in for the Anderson Trojan Band this year!!!!!! Such a great show. And TWO bass flutes!??! YES PLEASE!
Actually I think one is an alto flute (?) I'm pretty sure I heard somebody say it was. They do look similar though

Is this supposed to be USBands answer to San Antonio
This contest has been an alternative for BOA San Antonio for bands that don't want to spend as much, travel as far, or go somewhere smaller. I wouldn't call it a direct answer to San Antonio, it just gives smaller programs a good place to end the season. I would say USBand's answer to BOA SA is their event at AT&T Stadium, but that event is gone.
-
If you want to get people interested in this you might want to include the day and location of the contest.
Sorry knew I forgot something, got too into having to rewrite the whole schedule to make it readable here
