  1. Prosper would also be a mistake to not mention, their show took a while to peak but it really was fantastic at Duncanville when I saw it
  2. I saw them just a weekend earlier at Duncanville and I had a feeling they were going to place high, but they exceeded even my expectations.
  3. Area D will be a big one to watch, as of now with all the drops I have only have 5 bands projected to qualify for state (barring potential boundary changes). We have seen the big 3 RR schools (Round Rock, Cedar Ridge, and Westwood) all make state at least once in the past 3 cycles (with CR being the only one to do it all 3 times) and this past BOA SA with them all finishing within 0.375 points inside of each other, anything could happen. I also could see any of these groups in finals if they qualify for state. Reagan and CTJ certainly won't be missing state anytime soon and I feel similarly about Bowie, though not quite as strongly. Churchill is another group that could be thrown into the mix with with RR schools, but they haven't qualified for state since 2010(?) and their staff change seems to have set them back a little. Edit: I forgot to mention Churchill at first
  4. My main focus was that they made finals in every single class and considering that Vandegrift opened their doors in 2009, it shows that they have ALWAYS been a fantastic program. I understand that new schools get the advantage in every class, but looking at recent new schools like Weiss or Johnson, they didn't make BOA finals as a class A band. And Weiss never won their class in AA (we'll see where they go in AAA). This isn't to knock those programs, just demonstrate the next level approach to band at Vandegrift compared to other startup schools.
  5. Posted this on the HornRank forums and I think it is perfect for this thread, so here is all of Vandegrift's class championship titles. As far as I'm aware, they are the only band to have won a title in all 4 classes, A-AAAA, AND to have made finals at least once during all of the times of those classes in BOA history: 2010 Arlington, TX - 1st in Class A 2010 The Woodlands, TX - 1st in Class A (3rd overall in finals) 2010 San Antonio, TX - 1st in Class A 2011 Conroe, TX - 1st in Class AA 2012 Denton, TX - 1st in Class AA (6th overall in finals) 2012 San Antonio, TX - 1st in Class AA 2013 Austin, TX - 1st in Class AAA (4th overall in finals) 2013 San Antonio, TX - 1st in Class AAA (7th overall in finals) 2016 Austin, TX - 1st in Class AAAA (1st overall in finals) 2017 Conroe, TX - 1st in Class AAAA (1st overall in finals) 2019 Austin, TX - 1st in Class AAAA (1st overall in finals) 2019 Grand Nationals - 1st in Class AAAA (1st overall in finals) Truly a model program with some incredible history.
  6. Not this upcoming year, but I've heard Weiss is planning on attending nationals in 2022. This will be the first Pflugerville ISD school to attend nationals since Connally attended in 2006 and placed 26th overall in semifinals.
  7. I can't name any off the top of my head (unless you include pre-2009 when the highest class was AAA), but in 2014 Tarpon Springs won while only being AA, then Marian Catholic has many championship titles under their name pre-2009 when they weren't in their brief AAA years.
  8. I'm hosting a watch party for finals next Saturday and it's going to be a blast. A lot of my friends out here in Abilene know next to nothing about BOA bands and I'm looking forward to "educating" them. Gonna test my setup tonight after today's football game with the St. George stream, but I also just wanna watch BOA...
  9. Mason is having an incredible season from what I've heard, akin to their 2016 season when they medaled at Nationals. Definitely a lock and will be fighting for top 6 and potentially even a medal upset.
  10. Don't sleep on Hanks, they've had a fantastic season and I think are a dark horse for finals. They swept both prelims and finals at Area and it's not like 2nd and 3rd (Bel Air and Eastlake) were especially weak in any way. They also just beat 6A Area A champion Pebble Hills by nearly 2 points. There's a video you can find on a specific video streaming website from a couple weeks ago and I think they sound incredible.
  11. Definitely in the near future, but based off of what I've heard maybe not quite yet. Definitely a possibility, though.
  12. And also, my final predictions now that I've had a lot of time to think about it: 1) Ronald Reagan 2) Flower Mound 3) Hebron 4) Vandegrift 5) Claudia Taylor Johnson 6) Leander 7) Marcus 8) Vista Ridge 9) Keller 10) The Woodlands 11) L.D. Bell 12) James Bowie 13) Westwood 14) Coppell -------------------------------- 15) Cedar Ridge 16) Westlake 17) Rouse 18) Cedar Park 19) Prosper 20) Lake Travis
  13. Here's the final block of the Saturday, posting it now because I go out of town this weekend. Bummed I couldn't go or even watch it on stream, but this weekend is going to be fun for me as it is a retreat with my college band. Now for the bands! 12:45 Friendswood (Friendswood ISD, Friendswood) AAA Friendswood, after a director change and a drop in enrollment down to 5A, is smaller than they used to be but still a fantastic group. They are going to 5A state this year where they will be a finalist contender. 1:00 Wylie (Wylie ISD, Wylie) AAAA Before their top 25 placement in 2017, many people (including myself) had never heard of Wylie. Their show this year reminds me a lot of their 2017 show and I think they have very similar potential. 1:15 Granbury (Granbury ISD, Granbury) AAA Granbury burst onto the BOA scene last fall when they made finals at Midland and they did the same this past fall on a more competitive field. They are also the state alternates of a very competitive Area F and will put on a strong performance on Saturday. 1:30 College Park (Conroe ISD, The Woodlands) AAAA College Park seems to be having a weaker year for their standards based on scores that I’ve seen, but that doesn’t change the fact that I think they will do fantastically here at San Antonio to end their season on a high note. 1:45 James E. Taylor (Katy ISD, Katy) AAAA JET is going on their second consecutive year of being a BOA Houston finalist and for good reason. JET is a fantastic program and always put on a strong show at BOA San Antonio. 2:00 Dawson (Pearland ISD, Pearland) AAAA Dawson just jumped back into the BOA scene after a few years and they had a good showing at BOA Houston. Excited to see this show at some point because they’ve consistently been scoring incredibly well in GE all season. 2:30 Prosper (Prosper ISD, Prosper) AAAA Since their surprising 13th place prelims finish at BOA DFW, Prosper has cleaned their show a lot and are going to place very comfortably in the top 30. When I saw them at Duncanville, I was very impressed with the sound that they produce. 2:45 North Shore (Galena Park ISD, Houston) AAAA North Shore is one of my favorite Houston-area bands because of their incredible full ensemble sound (which I believe is best represented by their opening hit in 2018), they will definitely put their names on the BOA radar after Saturday and I hope they continue to participate. 3:00 L.D. Bell (Hurst-Euless-Bedford ISD, Hurst) AAAA L.D. Bell has been very in-and-out of finals the past few years, but they seem to be very strong this year based on their recent STL performance and results. While not a lock, they are a very safe bet for finalist. 3:15 Aledo (Aledo ISD, Aledo) AAA Aledo is another incredible Area F group in this block, and they will be attending state. They’ve consistently stayed in state finals for many years and are even a former BOA San Antonio finalist.
  14. Now for the next Saturday block! 9:45 The Woodlands (Conroe ISD, The Woodlands) AAAA While many people were underwhelmed by their BOA Houston score, TWHS appears to have done significant cleaning since then. They are a solid contender for the top half and more or less a lock for finals. 10:00 Roma (Roma ISD, Roma) AAA It’s been talked about to no end, so I don’t want to dwell on Roma’s UIL fiasco. This will likely be their last time performing this show and they are absolutely incredible. Excited to see if they can jump back into the top 40 this year. 10:15 Plano East (Plano ISD, Plano) AAAA Plano East has not competed in BOA at all this season so it’s hard to see exactly where they’ll place with everyone else. But they are always a very solid program and should not have an issue with place in the top 60 this year, maybe even pushing the 40s or 30s. 10:30 Pioneer (Sharyland ISD, Mission) AA Pioneer is another contender for the class AA title with one already under their belt from the McAllen regional. Pioneer’s show took them to state once again and it has a lot of potential in the BOA realm as well. 10:45 Hidalgo (Hidalgo ISD, Hidalgo) AA Hidalgo is a contender for a class AA medal, but I don’t see them being able to break Pioneer or Forney (or Weiss and Tom Glenn if they remain AA). Regardless, Hidalgo is one of the most consistent 4A groups in Texas and are a must-see if you want to learn more about the smaller bands in Texas. 11:00 Cy-Fair (Cypress Fairbanks ISD, Cypress) AAAA After dropping from 5th in 2018 to 13th in 2019 at the Houston regional, Cy-Fair definitely seems to be fighting an uphill battle with their staff changes. Regardless, they still have a very enjoyable and “Cy-Fair” show with their woodwinds being incredible as usual. Hoping to see a bit more body movement in the holds as I remember their being a lot of “park and bark” in early October. 11:15 Oak Ridge (Conroe ISD, Conroe) AAAA Oak Ridge returned to finals at Houston once again, but with a smaller group than usual due to the new CISD school that just opened a few years ago. They have a great show and are still performing excellently, so they should easily be top 40 or 30 this weekend. 12:00 Wakeland (Frisco ISD, Frisco) AAA Wakeland is having a fantastic year, one of their best since 2014-2015. Wakeland could be an upset for a class AAA medal and even has a chance at making finals. They will be at the 5A state marching contest once again this year.
  15. Now for the first Saturday block! 7:00 Marcus (Lewisville ISD, Flower Mound) AAAA If there’s one word to describe Marcus this year, it’s “clean.” Not that their show is easy either, but their cleanliness is what granted them their victory over Hebron at Duncanville this past weekend. They have a fantastic show this year and are a very strong contender for the top half of finals. 7:30 Hebron (Lewisville ISD, Carrollton) AAAA Hebron is incredible, but you already knew that. Their show is packed full of some of the craziest stuff you’ll ever hear a high school program perform, and they’re doing a dang good job at it. My personal pick for winning the music caption. 8:00 Timber Creek (Keller ISD, Keller) AAAA Yet another Duncanville finalist in this block, I love it! Timber Creek, even if weaker than last year, is by no means weak this year. They will be very comfortably in the top 30 and could even crack into the teens. 8:15 Burleson Centennial (Burleson ISD, Burleson) AAA Big historical season for BC! They attended their first BOA competition ever (Bedford), made BOA finals for the first time ever (Waco), and now have also qualified for state for the first time ever. They’ll be looking to add more historic achievements this season, but I’m not sure if it will be this weekend that it happens. 8:30 Wylie East (Wylie ISD, Wylie) AAA Another group who has qualified for state for the first time ever is Wylie East (or “Weast” as I affectionately call them). Weast has made BOA Midland finals the past 2 years and I’m excited to see how they stack up against bigger names this weekend. 9:00 Klein Oak (Klein ISD, Spring) AAAA Klein Oak was smack dab in the middle of the massive Houston bubble and while I wasn’t able to catch the performance myself, I heard it was a big step up for them from previous years. They’ve placed in the top 40 for the past 2 years now and they will surely do it again. 9:15 Pearland (Pearland ISD, Pearland) AAAA Pearland seemed to finally crack that early season speed bump that they’ve struggled with the past 2 years at BOA Houston, so we should expect nothing less than a fantastic performance from them as always. A dark horse for finals, but definite lock for top 30.
  16. Next block, and actually on the correct day! 7:15 Round Rock (Round Rock ISD, Round Rock) AAAA Round Rock has cleaned up their show A LOT since they missed BOA Austin finals, I think they will be closer to finals than a lot of people expect. Their show is very much a Nationals show and it won’t be the end of the world if they miss year, just like as in 2017. 7:30 Westlake (Alpine School District, Saratoga Springs, UT) AAA(A) The second out of state group is a band that is not here to make finals or medal in their class, but to witness some of the top performing groups in the nation. I’ve heard their district just opened up a new high school, so this historically AAAA group might drop down a class. 8:00 Coppell (Coppell ISD, Coppell) AAAA After taking 3rd in music at St. Louis, Coppell is back on my radar for making finals. I really enjoyed their performance at STL finals when I watched on stream, so I think they will be a very strong bubble group. 8:15 Flower Mound (Lewisville ISD, Flower Mound) AAAA After sweeping BOA Bedford in finals (including music over Hebron), Flower Mound showed that they are once again no joke. Probably the only group at SA that will be able to challenge Reagan visually and a definite medalist. 8:30 Collinsville (Collinsville School District, Collinsville, OK) A Yet another Class A group ready to make a splash at San Antonio and my favorite for the class championship. They are considered a small 5A school in OBA, just to show the difference in classes from Texas to Oklahoma. 8:45 Rouse (Leander ISD, Leander) AAA Who’s house? Rouse house! This could easily be true on Saturday night with them potentially making finals, which seems quite likely after their placement ahead of Cedar Park at TMC. They also are very likely to medal in their class once again. 9:00 Hollister (Hollister R-V, Hollister, MO) A The third out of state Class A group who I think will fittingly take 3rd in their class at San Antonio, after also taking 3rd in class at STL on a more competitive Class A field. 9:15 Vista Murrieta (Murrieta Valley Unified School District, Murrieta, CA) AAAA The fifth and final out of state group and only serious contender for finals. If they have a similar year as 2016, they have a great shot at finals, but the field at San Antonio is tougher than ever so they could miss finals even with a stronger show. 9:30 Tom Glenn (Leander ISD, Leander) AA(A) Glenn is having their first full senior class this year and they have improved drastically from 2018, so I do think they will be more than capable to make top 50 here. They also are a state qualifier for the first time in school history, also their first year eligible for state. If they remain Class AA, then they are yet another group competing for a medal. 9:45 Lake Travis (Lake Travis ISD, Austin) AAAA After a strong 7th place showing at BOA Austin, Lake Travis was set on a path towards a historic season. While they did place 12th at STL, the scores were very close in the bottom half and should not be too much of a concern, especially with their 7th place in music finish. Demand could be holding them back, but I also hear their STL performance was relatively dirty. 10:00 William H. Taft (Northside ISD, San Antonio) AAAA After nearly breaking top 50 at San Antonio last year, Taft has grown as a program based on recent videos I’ve seen despite their lower than expected early season placement at Vista Ridge.
  17. Technically a day late, but only by a few minutes, here's block #3! 4:45 Pflugerville (Pflugerville ISD, Pflugerville) AAA Pflugerville has been rising up the ranks since 2016 and this was their first year competing in UIL 5A where they appeared to have fared pretty well, as 2nd state alternate. Their BOA results haven’t been their highest ever, but I am not concerned of them dropping out of the top 50. 5:00 Vandegrift (Leander ISD, Austin) AAAA After sweeping prelims and finals at BOA Austin, Vandy has been on my radar for a championship contender at both San Antonio and Nationals. It will be interesting to see where they land this year, but they are one of my 4 major medal contenders. 5:15 Leander (Leander ISD, Leander) AAA Leander has my favorite show of the season, hands down. I see them being strong in the top half and potentially even medaling, but the latter is unlikely. The favorite to win Class AAA by a longshot. 5:30 Vista Ridge (Leander ISD, Cedar Park) AAAA VR’s show has been a hit all season and will be fighting to live up to last year’s phenomenal show and placement. With an overall stronger field, I could see them just outside the top half, but still comfortably top 10. 5:45 McNeil (Round Rock ISD, Austin) AAAA I had them on my list for top 50 last year, but that didn’t pan out for them. This season appears to be much stronger for them so that’s why I have them returning, their showing at McAllen was very impressive. 6:00 Cedar Park (Leander ISD, Cedar Park) AAA CP had a very strong start to the season at BOA Austin, but they seem to be plateauing a little bit if you look into TMC results. A strong contender for finals and a lock for class medalist, but their UIL-focused show might be hurting them just a little bit. 6:15 Cypress Falls (Cypress Fairbanks ISD, Houston) AAAA I was very surprised with their low placement at BOA Houston, I thought their show was very effective and they sounded good. Some visual dirt (especially in closer) that I’m sure they’ve had time to clean up. 6:30 Weiss (Pflugerville ISD, Pflugerville) AA(A) I’m pretty sure Weiss will be moving up to Class AAA this year, but if they remain AA then they will be great competition for Forney for the class championship. Weiss is very strong this year in spite of the director change and will be top 50 either way. 6:45 Archbishop Alter (Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Cincinnati, Kettering, OH) A The first out of state group at San Antonio this year! This class A band has many class championships under their belt and a fair share of class-rep semis performances at Nationals.
  18. I wouldn't be so ready to say that one style of judging is objectively better than the other. Both systems serve different purposes and are built around their respective purposes. BOA emphasizes audience enjoyment and the "experience," so show design is heavily taken into account. Meanwhile, UIL judges cleanliness and execution alone, thus the general ignorance of show design. BOA is an entertainment priority system while UIL prioritizes assessment. Just stating facts. That's not to say you can't prefer one judging style to the other, I personally prefer BOA myself and wish UIL would at least lean into show design if even just a little bit. Maybe try not to be so snippy and think before you post next time
  19. I'd be very surprised to see Hebron lose the music caption if they clean up by San Antonio.
  20. Now that I've had a day to take everything in, here are my thoughts as well: Marcus's show is incredible. At first I was surprised during the announcement of placements with them topping Hebron, but looking back on it their championship was well-deserved. Everything they do is so in-sync and mesmerizing, almost like Mandarins this past summer when it comes to performance from person to person in choreography. Musically, it was very clean and I'd personally say they had the strongest woodwinds of the night. Hebron was absolutely incredible, during the prelims run I was laughing or exclaiming in disbelief half the time at what those kids out there are attempting and executing darn well. Looked like their closer isn't quite finished as I'd find it hard to believe they are standing still the entire last minute+ of their show. The ballad when the mellophones pick up concert horns was glorious, don't think I've ever heard that many horns sound so unison. It also would be a sin not to mention the soprano sax soloist, beautiful control in the high range of the instrument. Their finals run wasn't as nearly crisp as prelims, but still a fantastic performance from them. Keller might just be my favorite show of the season. Their show design is always so them and this year is no exception. Despite being my first time ever hearing them in person, I immediately recognized the unique "Keller brass" sound and fell in love with the program even more. The closer was so electric and fun to watch, and the trombones projecting over the ensemble was just perfect considering I love a strong low brass section in impact moments. Lot's of great things coming from them and I have no doubt that they will make finals at San Antonio this weekend. Waxahachie has a really fun show, the pianist is insanely talented and a great performer. The colors on the uniform make the band pop so much visually. My biggest complaint is that they didn't use the jazz trio outside of the preshow, I think bringing back the drumset and bass at least once in the latter parts of the show would have been really fun. Other than that nitpick, fantastic performance from Waxahachie. Prosper had a very bread and butter marching band show with mostly traditional uniforms and no props, but it was very refreshing. The show designers took every advantage of these facts and gave us an easy to enjoy show that isn't ever fighting for your attention. Their musical performance of various classical selections with an ominous twist was very unsettling yet satisfying. The Elsa's Procession reprise at the end with the entire band marching backfield was such a neat effect. Keller Central might just have been my favorite show of the bottom half. It was very fun masterfully designed, as LKendrick mentioned with the various uses of Heart & Soul staying fresh throughout all 8-10 minutes of the show's runtime. They definitely earned that guard placement and the entire show was just very visually pleasing. Also the bari sax soloist was one of my favorite moments of the entire night. Haltom's show can be summed up in one word: FUN! The difference in level of performance from prelims to finals was astounding. Malagueña was very crisp and you can absolutely tell the kids are having a blast with it. If they were coming to the bloodbath that is already San Antonio, they would have a really good shot at finals and I personally had them over even Prosper in Waxahachie in my personal rankings. Wylie's show reminded me of their 2017 show where they played classical music and threw in a modern recognizable tune for the ballad. I already knew I was gonna love the show when the announcer was naming the musical selections, but was blown away by their performance in both prelims and finals. I have a feeling they are gonna do fantastically at BOA this year, just like in 2017. I was not able to attend BOA Midland this year because of my college commitments, but was very happy to see Permian return to finals ensuring that west Texas is still represented at that competition even if they were in 10th. Seeing them at Duncanville was incredible because they did not perform like a 10th place group, and the judges here seemed to agree. Their show was engaging and easy for me to get into and made me proud of being a music major from a west Texas school. Excited to see Permian grow even more than they already have in the coming years. Timber Creek was in 10th at this competition and it is a testament to how dense the competition was here, even if you disagree with that placement. As a former journalism-major, I enjoyed this show and me and my friend had a good time reading the headlines on the props in the back. I thought they were incredible in prelims, especially for going on very first in those weather condition. They upped their game in finals like so many other groups. For non-finalists, the biggest surprise for me was McKinney. The sound they produced was very loud considering how small of a band they were and their show was very accessible and lit up (haha) the stadium. I also really enjoyed Pearce's performance of Autumn Leaves and the entirety of Summit's show (I was shocked when they didn't make finals). Also getting to see Allen start with an already massive group in a circle only to double the size of their band about a minute into their show was one of my favorite moments in prelims.
  21. Here's the next 2 blocks since I missed yesterday while at DMI: 10:45 Cedar Ridge (Round Rock ISD, Round Rock) AAAA Cedar Ridge’s show this year is very fun and very Cedar Ridge. It’s the insanely loud small group we’ve grown to love and will have a great shot at finals this year once again. 11:30 Westwood (Round Rock ISD, Austin) AAAA What a breakout year! Westwood’s show is a GE monster and a half and will be not playing around to make finals this year. Their new closer, which I just saw on Friday night is a gift wrapped in GE. The only thing I could see holding them back is a relatively weaker drill book compared to their competitors. 11:45 Sandra Day O’Connor (Northside ISD, Helotes) AAAA O’Connor has been going through staff changes recently, but they seem to be getting back on their feet. They’ve been performing stronger this year than last year and competition results are reflecting that. 12:00 Del Rio (San Felipe-Del Rio CISD, Del Rio) AAAA This will be Del Rio’s 4th BOA contest of the season and they have made finals at 2 of the 3. Their show is very enjoyable and I find myself coming back to it quite a bit. 12:30 Westlake (Eanes ISD, Austin) AAAA Don’t let their 4th place finish at Houston fool you, Westlake is on FIRE this year. Their show is one of my favorites of the year and they are stronger than they were last year overall. 1:00 James Madison (North East ISD, San Antonio) AAAA Madison is a very up and down group, but I haven’t seen enough of them to count them out of the top just yet. --------------------------------------------------------------------- 2:00 Keller Central (Keller ISD, Fort Worth) AAAA KC made finals at BOA Bedford this year and are overall having a strong season. I got to see them at Duncanville and I absolutely love their show and the execution is fantastic. Their bari sax soloist is incredible especially. 2:30 John B. Alexander (United ISD, Laredo) AAAA Alexander has an incredible show this year and will be one of the many groups who could sneak their way into finals. If I recall correctly, they are currently undefeated this season and while that will not be true after SA, it bodes well for them overall. 2:45 Keller (Keller ISD, Keller) AAAA Don’t let Keller’s Waco performance fool you, they were very dirty and have a history of peaking late season, it’s not common that we see them doing mid-season competitions. Keller’s performance at Duncanville was very clean and crisp, the trombones in the closer are incredible and it’s one of my favorite shows this year. 3:00 Hendrickson (Pflugerville ISD, Pflugerville) AAA Henny is all over the place this year. Missing finals at Austin, making finals at a weaker TMC, then missing finals by a very surprising margin at a debatably even weaker Waco. I think they will have a strong performance at SA, but are mostly if not completely out of the conversation for finals. 3:15 James Bowie (Austin ISD, Austin) AAAA Similar to Hendrickson, Bowie has been up and down a lot. With low placements at both BOA Austin and TMC, they surprised everyone when they came out on top by over a point at Waco. Definitely an upper-bubble group for San Antonio finals. 3:30 Ronald Reagan (North East ISD, San Antonio) AAAA Reagan has yet to lose a single caption this year, even against groups like The Woodlands, Vandegrift, and Leander. The favorite to win San Antonio at this point with a beautiful show. 3:45 Clear Brook (Clear Creek ISD, Friendswood) AAA While not my favorite show of the season, Clear Brook has a very easy to follow and effective show that has been clean all season long. They could be fighting for a class medal this year. 4:00 Claudia Taylor Johnson (North East ISD, San Antonio) AAAA The most consistent group in Texas, CTJ hasn’t been out of the top 5 at San Antonio since 2011. I don’t see them dropping out this year either as they’ve had plenty of room for growth since their last competition in September. They could even challenge for a medal, but I think their show is a bit too “ADHD” to get that high. Here’s to no prop issues!
  22. Yeah, the cold most definitely effected the morning performances, Timber Creek was incredible!
  23. Haltom sounded and looked immensely better from this morning, definitely not staying in 10th after finals with a run like that!
  24. And cold it was! Glad I could make it out to the game, always fun to see other alumni and catch up with them. Really enjoyed their performance, a bit rough on the edges, but it’s difficult to perform your show after an entire football game in 40 degree weather.
