Yes! This is the first time the Jags have been in the playoffs since my daughter's freshman year (she graduated in 2015). We are in year three of Coach Basil, this is the first winning record since that playoff year in 2010 (where they got absolutely killed by the eventual champion Southlake Carroll 81-10 IIRC)

Area C 2018

One thing about this, Lewisville made it four bands from LISD (Lewisville) to make Area Finals. We are all very proud of LHS and this accomplishment. -

I am also a Football alumni parent as my son (who marched in the band as a freshman) played football for FMHS for four years. I'm glad for support from band to football and football to band. Anyhow to update the 6-6A standings: Flower Mound 4-0 District; 5-2 overall Lewisville 3-1 District; 5-2 overall Coppell 3-1 District; 5-2 overall Hebron 2-2 District; 4-3 overall MacArthur 2-2 District; 4-3 overall Marcus 2-2 District; 4-3 overall Nimitz 0-4 District; 3-4 overall Irving 0-4 District; 0-7 overall If the season ended today, FMHS, Lewisville, Coppell, and Hebron would be in the playoffs This is the first time EVER for Flower Mound to be in first place in the district this late into the season. Last week's results: Flower Mound outlasted Hebron 38-35 Coppell nipped FM Marcus 24-23 (I can verify that neither of the first two games had the bands perform at halftime, fans were disappointed) Lewisville blasted Irving 61-10 MacArthur beat Nimitz 50-18 Games this week: Flower Mound at Marcus for The Mound Showdown Coppell vs Irving Lewisville vs Nimitz Hebron vs MacArthur

6A Region Result Thread 2018
FloMoParent replied to NETexasBandFan's topic in Past Contests, Events, and Festivals Archive
I was at Region 2 for the 6A bands yesterday. FloMo had some technical issues with microphones (not surprising with the lack of field time all bands have had to deal with this year). I still thought they brought a stunning show with complex music book and drill. Hebron felt unfinished to me. They sounded amazing but it seemed like they got to the time limit and stopped. They also had a tremendous music book. Marcus, was, well Marcus. They played very well. From what I understand, their show is filled with easter eggs from the past 15 years of Mrs. Drinkwater. Although they are not Region 2, I hear that Coppell has an indoor practice facility with a full football field. Is that true? Does the band get to use it? That would seem to be a huge advantage to them this year as most of the bands have had very limited field time. -

I was in the pressbox for Hebron at Flower Mound (great game!) but there was no halftime performance by the bands -

Hi, I'm Kevin. My daughter played clarinet at Flower Mound High School from 2011/12 until graduation in 2014/15. My son played Trumpet (but marched Trombone) in 2014/15. He also played football and graduated FMHS in 2018. Both attend the University of Arkansas. Member of the FMHS Band Boosters edit to add: I am on the MFA fourms as krby71 -
:::warning somewhat political tangent but related to bands in general::: Texas school funding and finance is a giant mess right now. Too many politicians in Austin want to use districts like Allen as a strawman to make their case that property taxes are too high. They fully ignore that the voters of that district approved the bond measures to finance those capital projects and ONLY the taxpayers of that district are responsible for paying for them. Additionally, recapture (what is commonly and incorrectly called Robin Hood) is dramatically impacting school district budgets. Austin ISD alone has to pay over $650 million to the state in recapture funds. Recapture funds do not automatically go to finance other property tax poor districts, they go into the General Fund. Legislators are relying on recapture to help balance the budget. Those very same members of the TexLege who are calling for property tax reductions at the municipal level, have written in the budget that property taxes must increase 14% over the two-year term of the budget. How does this impact the schools? They must do more with less money. The percentage of state funding has dropped to record lows while the number of children in schools continues to increase. In Lewisville ISD, we will be paying $35 million in recapture to the state. There are very few elected officials in Austin that are friends of public schools. This isn't a partisan post. There are members of both parties that are friendly to public schools and not friendly to public schools. To keep this from getting too political, I would welcome private messages to discuss this. Or you can look up Texans for Public Education (Texans4PublicEd @Texans4E) Regardless, please vote. Vote for individuals, not parties.

2018 BOA San Antonio?
FloMoParent replied to MadisonBandMan1's topic in Past Contests, Events, and Festivals Archive
The acoustics of AT&T stadium live up to its nickname "The Death Star" I don't know how this would really help. I was at the stadium for the Arkansas vs Texas A&M game this year. I was in the lower level near the field and you can't hear what is being performed. Sitting in the stands a couple sections away from the Razorback Band I still had difficulty hearing what they were playing. -
After three district (6-6A) games, Flower Mound (4-2; 3-0) is currently in first place. However, their toughest games of the year are the next three games on the schedule. They will play Hebron (4-2; 2-1) this week, The Mound Showdown at FM Marcus (4-2; 2-1) on Oct 26, and at Coppell (4-2; 2-1) on Nov 2. They finish the season at home vs Irving-MacArthur. Flower Mound lost to Keller-Fossil Ridge and Prosper in out of district play. They have District victories over Lewisville, Irving, and Irving Nimitz Hebron lost to Keller Fossil Ridge in out of district play, and then lost to Coppell 16-15. They have District victories over FM Marcus and Irving-Nimitz Coppell lost to Allen in out of district play, and then lost to Lewisville 13-6 last week. They have District victories over Irving-MacArthur and Hebron. Coppell plays FM Marcus this week. FM Marcus lost to Arlington Bowie in out of district play, and then lost to Hebron 35-20 last week. They have District victories over Irving and Irving-Nimitz. FM Marcus plays Coppell this week Coppell, Flower Mound, FM Marcus, and Hebron are the four teams currently projected to make the playoffs for District 6-6A I get to be in the press box for FMHS vs Hebron this week

Pop!
FloMoParent replied to whitewing09's topic in Everything Music: Marching, Concert, Auditions and more
as mentioned in this thread, and not giving away too much it is a Pop Art show featuring the artistic styles of Warhol, Haring, and Lichtenstein. It also takes the over-all theme of Pop Art to use images of popular culture in art, emphasizing the banal or kitschy elements of any culture, most often through the use of irony As you watch the show different pop art themes appear.. During the show the band "morphs" from a contemporary BOA style band to the classic counter-marching Military Style marching band and back again. You will even find a portion of the show where various woodwinds morph into colorgard and back again. And yes FMHS does rely heavily upon the "arts" when designing their shows 2013 - FloModern - modern art 2014 - Harmonic Tapestries based off of the environmental artwork of Christo and Jeanne-Claude 2015 - Surreal - Surreal art with the signature ending banner of "this is not a marching band" as a take off from "The Treachery of Images" Ceci n'est pas une pipe (this is not a pipe) 2016 - Leonardo's Dream - Based on Leonardo da Vinci’s Codex Leicester scientific writings collection; and, da Vinvi’s desire to fly 2017 - Fractured Moments - Based on the Mosiac art and architecture of Antoni Gaudi 2018 - Pop! - Pop art (see above) -
The concept of FMHS this year is Pop Art. One of its aims is to use images of popular culture in art, emphasizing the banal or kitschy elements of any culture, most often through the use of irony It is also associated with the artists' use of mechanical means of reproduction or rendering techniques. In pop art, material is sometimes visually removed from its known context, isolated, or combined with unrelated material. As you watch the show different pop art themes appear, including Warhol, Haring, and others. During the show the band "morphs" from a contemporary BOA style band to the classic Military Style marching band and back again. Part of the use of the BOA flags is a Pop Art take on the established and known logo. It (and the possibility of other logos) are only used with permission from the respective organization(s). Yes, FloMo relies heavily in the "arts" when defining their shows 2013 - FloModern - modern art 2014 - Harmonic Tapestries based off of the environmental artwork of Christo and Jeanne-Claude 2015 - Surreal - Surreal art with the signature ending banner of "this is not a marching band" as a take off from "The Treachery of Images" Ceci n'est pas une pipe (this is not a pipe) 2016 - Leonardo's Dream - Based on Leonardo da Vinci’s Codex Leicester scientific writings collection; and, da Vinvi’s desire to fly 2017 - Fractured Moments - Based on the Mosiac art and architecture of Antoni Gaudi 2018 - Pop! - Pop art

The "tips, hints, and great things to know" for band parents
FloMoParent replied to FloMoParent's topic in Band Parents
one of my favorite "Band t-shirts" is the one that says "Proud to be LISD with the logos of Flower Mound, Hebron, and Marcus on it (from 6A State in 2016) -
I've been compiling a list of "Tips, hints, suggestions, and words of wisdom" to share with the newbie band parents. What are some of your "I wish I would have known that sooner" things? Some of mine: (This is not an all inclusive list, nor are they ranked in any order, just stuff I think others would like to know) - August Band camp is tough, but they start seeing the rewards with that first football game, and continue seeing it once the competitions start. - When in doubt check the {weekly notification email}, the band homepage, and calendar, 9 times out of 10 your question can be answered there. - Volunteer, show up to competitions and concerts, and support their efforts in any way possible. The kids may not say it, but they really do appreciate it. - The first year or two they may not want to acknowledge your presence, but as they get older, they will actively seek you out and say hi. - Give them space to grow. I know they are your baby, you worry about them, and want to be near them; but, you don't need to always stay at their hotel, or eat at their restaurants. Part of the fun of band trips is to get away from the family, be yourself, and hang out with your friends. Besides, their schedule is so tight, that their time to see you will be very limited. Which is why volunteering to chaperone or pit crew is great, because you get to see them sometimes. - Pit Crew is hard work, but very fun and rewarding. While they may never get to see the show from the stands (my first time to see it was on the recent video on the music for all site), the view and feeling from the field is unmatched. They are also the first to congratulate the kids when they finish. If you watch the finalist spotlight, you'll see the pit crew high-fiving, fist-bumping and hugging the kids as they left the field. - The fans in the stands are just as important. Imagine coming into a huge stadium with no one cheering for you. The mojo yell was sort of a nice way to help the kids smile and relax before they started their show. - Parents have as much fun as the kids, and they will also go through withdrawals once the kids graduate. - Band is a wild ride, just hold on, and enjoy it as much as possible. - Let people know if you have a special talent. You never know when someone with you skill is needed. - We joined a highly functioning team. The best part of this team is that all the parts work together. - We have one of the best leadership groups and directors around. - When we turn our children over to the band, they are in amazing hands. We never have to worry about: Our child being taken care of (the chaperons take each student under their wing becoming temporary parents) Our child being fed (many thanks to the army of people who go the extra mile to meet all the dietary needs) Our child being lost or left out (from the most skilled senior to the most insecure freshmen, everyone has a part, and everyone has a contribution) - The parent's Facebook page is a great place to meet fellow parents. The "watering holes" around competitions and volunteering are better places to make friends. - If information didn't come from the directors or from a booster club officer, it probably is just a rumor and shouldn't be spread. - If you really want to be "in the know" join and be active in the booster club (even better, volunteer). - We are one team. Colorguard, drumline, pit, props, brass, woodwinds, drum majors, sound techs, pit crew, and parents all succeed as one. Each group relies on the other to make an amazing performance, there isn't a pyramid but a giant circle. - The Band Booster club is one of the greatest parent organizations on campus. - Band is a time consuming activity. You and your child will become a great manager of time when they graduate. - Our bands (not just the marching band, all the concert bands, colorguard, winterguard, and drumline) are amazing performers. - The band directors don't really like chants, it draws attention to the crowd. They love wild applause and cheers for the band. - A sense of humor is sometimes your best sense. - Things get lost, things break, there are winners, and things won't always go the way we want. - Don't spend needless energy worrying about things we can't control. Worry about the things that we can control. - Change is a constant. Don't stress that there are changes, stress that changes are implemented as quickly as possible. - Of all the hours we as parents spend, realize that the directors are spending all their time making sure our children are the best they can be. I find it amazing that they can even remember their family's faces at times. - Celebrate the achievements. - Be proud of your child all time. - Give lots of hugs. - Go to as many of the competitions as you can. - Have plenty of tissue or a handkerchief at the ready for the following: The playing of the school song to the seniors on Senior Night. The last competition performance (I was a blubbering mess during the GN Finals performance) The playing of the yearly video at the Band Banquet and dance (actually most of that night you will need it) - It may seem like we spend a lot of time doing band things, but four years go by in a blink of an eye.

During GN 2014 semi-finals, Dan's conversation with his buddy sitting next to him was accidentally broadcast, well the very start of it, when Flower Mound announced. Right after he finished the announcement he said something like "Ohh, I really like this one... what?... huh?...oops..." -
