  6. It's such a great event. Where else can you see 5 of the top 20 bands in the country for under $10. I enjoyed Glen's show as well, you can see the promise in that band. I hope they can get their numbers up so they can be competitive as well.

  9. I 100% agree we shouldn't count Hanna out at all. They always have major improvements in overall sound and cleanliness when they need it most(area). I remember last year they looked and sounded a lottt stronger at area than at any other prior comp! Very excited for the San Benito Festival. Is anyone here going? I would love to have someone give results when they're out. I always struggle to find the results of the valley hosted competitions. UISD Marching Festival is also this Saturday. I think I can keep track of that. The big Matchup there is JBA and United.

  13. Coming from someone who seen them preform at finals, just so unbelievably clean I was honestly not surprised once they won. On the other hand I loved PM show but there was some moments where visuals are dirty and some musical moments, but in the end I definitely believed Clements deserved to win.

  14. I am so thrilled to watch the awesome bands at this event next weekend. Obviously, Pearland will be great, but the Houston marching scene grows in quality each year, so I'm betting on some fun surprises. Also, I'm curious to see if Seven Lakes can maintain the high standard they set for themselves last season. They didn't make a huge splash last year early season, but maybe this year they'll hit the ground running.

  16. Okay here’s my thoughts after the first weekish of competitions. Hebron-Feels a little more jazzy this year, really like how visual it is though. FloMo- ……….nope still waiting Marcus-Talk about a percussion section. I expect theme to get the percussion category for sure this year. McKinney-Three words for you: Wall, Of, Sound. Talk about a dark horse band, not to mention knocking down Braswell a couple of spots Braswell-Some really good stuff from them. I was expecting them a little higher for Melissa, but it could’ve just been their run. Both Wylies-They are both doing really well. Weast in particular sounds a lot better than last year. They are definitely both bands that could throw off rankings for me. Still have yet to see: Prosper, RockHill, FloMo, and many more. Can’t wait for this season though.

  17. The current entries can be found here: https://www.wgi.org/currententries/cg-current-entries/ So far, only those going to Dayton have been allowed to register. The contests should fill up in the coming weeks. It's exciting to see Warren Central from Indianapolis making a trip down to San Antonio. They seem to enjoy attending a new out-of-state regional each year. Texas will be lucky to have them! Update: Dayton has really filled up. Only IW and SO have a few spots left. It's going to be a very competitive World Championships. Current Texas entries for Dayton: Independent A: Allure Independent, DTX Independent, RGV Winter Guard, Redemption Guard, and Seven Lakes Independent Open: Industry Independent, NOVA Independent Winterguard, ORIGINS Open, and Undaunted. (Verve is on the wait-list.) Independent World: Invictus and ORIGINS Scholastic A: Chisholm Trail, Friendswood, George Ranch, Grand Oaks, Hays JV, Hebron, Hutto, Jersey Village, Joshua, Montwood, Pebble Hills, Rock Hill, Southlake Carroll JV, Tomball, Wakeland, Walnut Grove, Westwood, and Wylie. Scholastic Open: Bridgeland, Claudia Taylor Johnson, Clear Brook, Cy-Fair, Hays, James Bowie, Melissa, Pearland, Ronald Reagan, Southlake Carroll, and Westlake. Scholastic World: Little Elm and The Woodlands.

don't know what they favor, prob different things individually, but my feeling is that they're better positioned to help bands figure out the content stuff, since they're super duper arrangers and visual designers themselves. if i were a newbie designer, might even be a lil intimidated to hear what they think LOL. excited for the feedback too. the 2 that judge a lot for DCI/WGI/BOA recently are Clif Walker and Damon Padilla, who just judged DCI finals. they may be more locked into the national judging "hive mind" as I call it. tbh results at this contest can sometimes be a bit different than i expect. it's been that way since the beginning!!

  22. Didn't see until now that they won! I don't really have a comparison point to make an assumption about where they might fall, but I would assume they crack the top 10 now.

  23. This competition could go a few different ways. But I agree that Lake Belton should do very well, I like what they are doing this year. I feel like I am going to give Churchill credit for this week & keep them higher. Churchills music seemed good at BOA, and I think it will probably be fairly close in this competition between SDOC, Hutto, Taft & them (6A wise). Most of these bands were neck and neck at BOA San Marcos. Predictions: 1. Winston Churchill 2. Taft 3. Lake Belton 4. Sandra Day O' Connor 5. Hutto 6. John Paul Stevens 7. Jack C Hayes 8. College Station 9. Liberty Hill 10. A&M Consolidated

  24. Well everyone, we’re right on the doorstep of the “Bandtober” competition season! Really excited to see some good bands in San Benito this Saturday, it’s going to be a great showcase of talent from over half of the 6A Bands! As for my predictions for this contest, I can see Los Fresnos winning big, their show is phenomenal this year! Weslaco and Edinburg will both be in the matchup for 2nd or 3rd place, anything could happen with those two bands, really looking forward to see where they stand. Likewise, I also wouldn’t count Hanna out just yet, they usually level up big time in the road leading up to area, trust the process, they always a very talented group and I have no doubt they want to defend their silver medal, however as of now, I would put them for 4th or 5th at the SB comp. As for Harlingen, I heard their most recent run and WOW! Way to go. I also wouldn’t count this group out of finals, I can see them making 4th at San Benito, but they could potentially sneak into that 3rd spot. At UISD, it’ll be close matchup between JBA and United, I can see a rivalry growing between these groups as they get more neck to neck in their productions! What are y’all’s thoughts? What bands do y’all see making an “upset” at area this year? It’s going to be a fun season!

  27. Midway is weird in that they never release the schedule for this contest, and it's usually posted here by a parent or child. I did some digging around, and this is all I got: 4A - China Spring, Connally, Hillsboro, Jarrell, and Lorena 5A - Corsicana, Georgetown, Seguin, and Waco 6A - Copperas Cove and Temple That's all I know for sure. I'm curious about East View because they're usually at this contest, and their band calendar lists an unspecified marching contest scheduled on this date. While I'm not 100% sure, I'm fairly confident they'll be here. Other than them, though, no clue for anyone else. That's only 11 guaranteed bands (12 if East View shows up), which somewhat follows the trend of this contest shrinking over the past few years. Last year, there were only 16 spots for Prelims performance, and only 13 ended up being filled, so this could be our lineup.

Definitely, brewer making alot of improvements. Speaking of improvements im suprised nobody is talking about Saginaw. They just beat fossil ridge and chisolm trail (last years finalists) with breeze it seems. Saginaw has always been one of those bands that had potential and i think this year they are finally showing it! Would be crazy if they snuck into a state spot like how brewer did in 2022 haha

  38. And that is all this conversation about the judging is about - improving the judging, not a "band x should have won". My take that you can read at Hornrank was that both Cy-Fair and Bridgeland had outstanding shows with very little between them. I enjoyed them both and am very pleased that both programs continue to put out strong shows, and more importantly, strong performances. The only program I still have some bias toward is The Woodlands, but our youngest last marched in 2018 so even that is getting tempered year by year.

  40. My name is Kai and I am currently attending the University of North Texas (not as a music major). Last year I was a member of the Green Brigade and the UNT Concert Band, I am sad to report I had to drop music as a whole for mental health reasons. I have thought about going back; however, it’s just not in the cards for me with how my life is right now. If I do go back, it’ll likely just be for marching band. I’ll forever miss band but I know I made good memories.

  42. Just an old mans 2 cents on 'judging' the design of marching shows early season. It's funny the 'analysis' that people do of different marching shows and judgements on things that are clearly in the earlier stages of production and haven't been fully polished and finished. Could you imagine going up to an artist like Michelangelo while he's still working on the Statue of David and saying, "You know, I really just question some of your design choices..." Maybe let them get through every step of the production and design process to have a fully produced product before criticizing design choices? And even then, it's all 100% subjective thoughts and opinions on anything within the marching arts regarding 'design'. It's a part of the love hate relationship I have with marching band - rather than judge the design, support the kids and staff who are working hard to make whatever product they have on the field the best they can make it. I'm just an old timer who likes band and tries my best, which can be challenging, to not make design judgements, but only judgements on performance with things that are objective - like, did they play in time? did they play with good sounds? etc. Again, just an old mans 2 cents on 'judging' the design of marching shows early season.

  43. Will probably change after next weekend but for now: 1. Marcus 2. Coppell/Wakeland 3. Wakeland/Coppell 4. Prosper 5. SLC 6. Lone Star 7. Mckinney/Wylie 8. Wylie/Mckinney 9. Lebanon Trail 10. Braswell 11. Forney 12. Rockwall/Rock Hill --- 13. Rock Hill/Rockwall 14. Burleson Centennial 15. MN Potential finalist: Reedy, Mckinney North, Burleson Centennial, Walnut Grove I think with seeing how many of these bands we're at the top of this weekends at probably will be close in terms of next weekend, that 10-15 will probably be very tight score wise. I'd have my top 10 as locks, kind of hard to tell because this will be most of these bands first boa of the season and they sometimes place way differently from UIL to BOA score sheets, but yeah something like this

Don’t really know how to determine this (Mostly because of general effect) but still a good comp

I know it's still early season, but the Mansfield comp happened, and SGP beat Lake Ridge by a little over a full point. I'm VERY impressed with the performances they've been putting out. I think they're sounding amazing, and I really believe they're going to be stiff competition this season at area.

  47. Argyle: Ressurection Symphony is top 3 classical works imo. Opening hit was nice. Bit of visual and marching inconsistency in the beginning. Ensemble balance is well done, and the spacing in between notes is super well defined. One of my favorite ballad hits of the day, and I love how warm the end of the ballad felt. This year’s Area B is going to be brutal.
