I feel like we have discussed this ad nauseum but it’s always a fun possibility to consider. The experts say it wouldn’t be good for us to do and it would add an extra day to the competition schedule, which bands don’t wanna have to do.

It isn't a bad idea, just not a practical idea.

I think something will eventually give, so just as San Antonio was the first Super Regional, I think it will be the first to morph into something more (but less than Grand Nationals). What that may be I don't know. maybe somehow expand GNats so there is room to expand SA into something else? Who knows.....

It sort of did that already last fall with the new format and additional bands allowed in.

Here’s the announcement this fall. :D

Dan Potter: welcome to Bands of America’s Super D-DUPER Regional.

Yes, it would add an extra day, but is that really that huge of an issue when in most years there are at least 10-20 bands staying for State later that week or traveling to Indy for GNat’s a week later?

Probably so...for exactly those reasons.

I’ve been thinking about this for a while.

San Antonio BOA could add Sunday and initiate a qualifying requirement for preliminary performance slots for Saturday and Sunday (1st part of day like they currently do on Saturday). Friday would be for bands who did not participate in a BOA regional and if needed, for those who did not make finals in a BOA event based on preliminary performance ranking. Bands with Friday night football games would be able to do both (The Woodlands comes to mind and I believe some other bands had to travel back and forth to be at games) Having kids performing on a few hours sleep is a killer and costs the bands more money. It would be a win for BOA - more bands could test the waters and would have incentive to sign up for a regional.

I see a Thursday added in order to have a semis round - do not see a Sunday - we are still in the bible belt. do not see any high school event on a Sunday - that would be a fail in Texas. there is a reason that no program can practice on Sunday

Regardless of add Sunday or Thursday it would be a lot better for the kids vs having bands perform super early in the morning. I do like the idea of the preference for bands who participate in regionals to get the better performance times/days. BOA already rewards the top half of prelims with the best finals slots.

I also wondered why GN isn’t held the week of Thanksgiving. Of course, TX would have an advantage since the weather is still pretty good in November for practice. This year is pretty late and we should see some really good TX scores and possibly a lot of show changes after the SA Super Regional.

I am guessing that Thanksgiving Holiday is one of the biggest travel days of the year and a family time. Having it over Thanksgiving would impact their attendance levels.

also keep in mind, that this year is the first time their is a 2 week break between BOA SA and GNats - I am guessing that this is being driven by the availability of Lucus Oil Stadium. it is football season and that is the primary function of that venue. While they have not released their schedule yet - I think you will find that they have a home game the weekend prior to GNATS

I would think attendance would increase if held the week of Thanksgiving. Family time at a GNs would be great. Most schools are off so kids wouldn’t be stressed trying to complete homework on the road. Parents typically have a short work week and wouldn’t have to use as much vacation time. The completion could be held during the week so no conflict with NFL. Semis start on Monday? In my head this all works perfectly...

Thanksgiving week would be absolutely horrendous for GN and band attendance.

What makes you think that? I’m just curious as to what the negatives could be...I draw a comparison to college bowl games, but I totally get where many would not want to spend part of their holiday in Indy...but maybe for a once in a lifetime experience to support their kids?

Pushing gn’s to thanksgiving week would be tough. While anyone who posts on these boards are 100% fans of marching band and we do what we need to do to support and fund it- I would suggest a larger percentage of families while being completely supportive of their child being in the band- I don’t think they would be supportive of setting aside their family traditions of thanksgiving break and taking the whole family to Indy. Also that’s adding another 3 weeks to the band season- and I know when we are in football playoff games- by that time everyone is exhausted and tired and ready for a break from band- I don’t know how well they could stay in competition level form for that long.

3 weeks is a lot, I agree. I do think it’s very difficult for the TX bands to travel to SA and GNs back to back- when GNs is the following week. I think this year is going to be great for TX bands having the extra time to take advantage of the judges feedback before GNs. I think it’s a real possibility that all of the TX bands make finals...and hopefully bring back some

it may be a once in a lifetime experience for the child and the parents - but Thanksgiving is usually more than the immediate family - many that may not give a rats butt about the marching arts

Also travel costs would go up dramatically on all accounts. Gas, plane tickets, hotel costs. It would start getting unfeasible in terms of logistics too.

Yes, That is an expensive time for travel. I didn’t think about that.

Haven't been on for several weeks. Just wanted to point out that as recently as 2015 there were 2 weeks between SA and GNats.

I was going to say that awhile back but never got around to it.

Thanksgiving is late again this year so that’s probably why.

Indiana high school athletics use Lucas Oil Thanksgiving weekend to finish out the football season with tournaments. They have different classes by school size so there are a few high school games then.
