First Friday Night Lights Performances

Recommended Posts

There are a few things I can tell from the Woodlands clip about that very small part of their show: 1.) It's musically demanding, but doesn't look visually demanding 2.) The kids carry themselves with great poise and project their style very, very well for this early 3.) The guard is performing much more cohesively as an ensemble than their nearest competitors, but again, the work isn't as challenging. Obviously, I have no idea what the rest of the show is like, but my gut feeling says that TW is going to end up with a really clean show again. Also, I don't think I posted this on TX Bands, but I figured out that the first two acts of The Woodlands' show are from the first two movements of Mahler's First Symphony. I also *think* they're doing music by Pink Floyd (probably the song "Time"), but I'm not sure about that.

Unfortunately whoever's taking video for the Westlake band this year has kind of been focusing on panning around to individual people so the video we've gotten is kinda crappy. Skip to the four minute mark for our performance from last night against Austin High which includes our second movement:

Hmmm. Definitely not the strongest early performance from CTJ I've seen or heard. I wish they had done the opener. It looked really cool from backfield! This second movement just seems like a quirky little diversion that doesn't work well on its own. It needs some context.

completely agree.

Also anyone seen Bowie this year? From what I've heard this year isn't a strong one for them either.

Still super impressed by Vista Ridge this year. That band is going places.

Performance wise Bowie is Bowie, just plain great. The concept is probably my least favorite they've done over the past couple of years and the musical selection doesn't particularly grab me, but that's just me. Honestly with some more watches I'll probably come to enjoy it just like their show last year. They're one of the most consistent bands in Texas, if not the country, so I wouldn't bet on them dropping competitively.

While I do not have a video, I did get the chance to go see Leander on Friday night, and I can say that the videos of them so far don't do them justice. The full sounds they are producing at the moment are just wonderful. I love their opener, it's so intense and their percussion section is really performing well for early in the season. The opening hit is just fantastic and the choir soloists, which are really hard to hear on the videos, are just beautiful. The Philip Glass section of the opener reminds me of their opener from last year, as I believe they did Orawa, which is another minimalistic piece, Leander just brings so much life to minimalistic pieces. The ending of the opener is so powerful. And then there is a beautiful ballad, and the choir soloist is just masterful. The drill in the ballad is also very eye catching, and visually appealing. And their hit in the ballad is just WHOA, especially for early in the season. This band is looking really good right now. But I haven't gotten the chance to see many other bands live so I haven't the slightest clue if they'll win on the day of BOA Austin, but man do they look and sound good.

Holy moly cedar park. Its all incredible already but that woodwind tonguing run deal at 2:19 just had be laughing and shaking my head. Wow. Hope I get to see that live this year.

Saw a video of Vandegrift on Youtube, can't find it anymore. Looks like a new drill designer maybe? Not sure, but either way.. Beautiful visual package. They finally really fill the field this year. Beautiful dancers as we have come to expect. Music is INTENSE and much more challenging than past. Early season struggles but this is by and far the best, most complete and demanding show they have put out by a long shot. They move and move and play and play.

Really interested to see the LISD bands compete at BOA and UIL. Gonna go ahead and call a LISD state advancer sweep.

Just my two cents

I'm not sure how Rouse will do this season, but man, this is probably the best they have been visually this early in the season (musically, they're doing okay). They are certainly on the rise (even if it might be slowly) and they could potentially become a serious competitor over the next couple years or so.

Rouse is looking really good. A big step up from previous years.

LISD is a powerhouse. This year I'm especially excited to see this districts success. Each school has improved immensely in just the last 4 years I can't wait to see what these schools will do in the future.

Right now Leander is in the lead. The attention to detail that they have makes for a complete show. The fact that they can produce great tone with the volumes they are going for knocks my socks off. They contrast their opener with a beautiful, captivating ballad so well it moves me every time. It's no doubt they deserved the music caption at San Antonio Finals last year. Leander is a powerhouse that is ready for their chance at state.

Cedar Park. Wow, the only thing that might get in Leander's way is cedar park. They play so beautiful, I just love their woodwind capabilities. Cedar Park is a constant threat.

Vandegrift, and Vista Ridge are doing exceptionally well for this early in the year. Both are playing intense pieces and doing a pretty good job. I definitely see them closing a gap between them and the other schools. I don't think vista ridges show is as captivating as Vandegrift but both are sure to make finals this year.

Rouse is improving a lot compared to years past. I think they are trying to play catch up with the other LISD schools, and it's partially working. They just need more time to really get their identity, but this year is already way better than they have ever been. I expect them to jump a lot of rankings this year.

Like it is mentioned in almost every post. I can't wait to see all of these bands live. If you are in the Austin area you need to go to the LISD Festival of Bands tomorrow evening. $5 to see predicted state finalists and division sweeps live in a band environment? This is a steal of a show. I'm looking forward to see the amount of talent those students have.
