Not much stability outside of the top 2 when moving between prelims and finals. Rouse in 3rd in prelims, Westlake 4th, Vista 5th. Leander jumped up in finals from 9th.

Crisp did not prefer Vista today as much as others. 8th in music effect in prelims, and then 8th again in music individual in finals. He judges brass for DCI, so maybe individual music is more his thing. Westlake won all 3 effect judges in prelims over Vista, but when the judges swapped in finals, that reversed, with Vista then winning through effect, but Westlake stronger in both performance captions. The music scores are definitely a surprise.

I try not to comment during a performance but I truly truly do not understand the screens. Now that it's evening they're even brighter and more distracting. Unless you're at the pressbox, maybe?, they're covering so many of the performers.

Edit: I can tell Leander is performing well but it's impossible to genuinely pay attention to them. This is an absurd use of money. It's CTJ Whataburger logo on scrims level of absurd.

The screens were donated for use during their program this year. One of the band parents has connections with the company that supplied them. Their band boosters posted about this on Facebook.

Ultimately, I think the screens may just be ahead of their time. There’s always a few bands that try new things before it becomes mainstream & I for one think it’s cool that they’re taking the activity to new heights. At the end of the day, band is an art form and thus subjective. What’s more important is keeping things positive & praising the work of the kids on the field. I’m sure they think the screens are quite cool too!

Just got home lol

gotta say I don’t really agree with scores overall, mainly CR, and round rock in 10th? Obv I dint watch finals but overall scores seem a tad low, but then again Avon and an 84 something so it doesn’t seem to be wrong but idk, I’m no judge so what do I know. Regardless, congrats to Vandy on the wing to everyone else who performed today!

if you don’t like it, a simple “the screens aren’t doing it for me but xyz look/sound good” would suffice.

The problem is for some people the screens are so distracting that it actually is taking away from how well the kids are performing. If it's easy enough for you to look past that's fine but for some of us it was a legit annoyance in an otherwise good show.

Depending on if you count san antonio as a regional, this is win #8 for Vandegrift (if you count SASR)

I saw their show a couple of weeks ago at the Cedar Park/Vandegrift football game and it was already super tight even then.  They're just so good, so precise, so skilled.  Reading through the sentiments on this thread, it sounds like some folks didn't find their show to be particularly moving, but I have to say this is my favorite show of theirs in years, I really like it.

Regarding Leander, I didn't get to see their show but we were parked right next to their trucks in the lot.  Watching their parents/pit crew wrestle those screens was something else.  They had a gas-powered 4-wheeler to tow them around the lot, before entering and after exiting the stadium.  I have no idea how they moved them on the field, 27 parents maybe? :)

Speak for yourself, I found them distracting on first read but much less so from the press box. A little disappointed in the number of people who seem unable to look past a prop and see the students performing at the highest level they have since Covid. It clearly didn’t bother the ensemble visual or visual effect judge all that much.

speaking about disagreements on a design doesn’t usually take away from the kids, but when it gets to a point where nothing is being said about the performance other than “screen too bright, I can’t see”…

if you don’t like it, a simple “the screens aren’t doing it for me but xyz look/sound good” would suffice.

I wouldn’t give them anymore time of day. Let them sit in the stands and be “blinded”. They clearly missed the point.

To be Curiouser and Curiouser about what's going on behind those screens. I kid. I do hope by TMC adjustments to the screens will be made, brightness in the evening at the very least.

Very excited to see where a lot of these programs are at in about a month once contests start back up. A lot of rehearsals with clinicians in some of these bands next few weeks.

They used the 4 wheeler to move it on the field as well.

Really?  Wow.  I didn't know motorized vehicles were allowed.  We sure could have used about 23 of those when we did Mirror Mirror 3 years ago! :)

I totally forgot y'all had so many on field. How heavy were each piece? Especially the largest one...

Yeah, I'm curious about the Alamodome and whether it will be allowed

They were probably a couple hundred pounds each?  Their weight wasn't really as bad as their size-- on a windy day they just became massive sails.  We lost one blowing over during BOA-Waco that year.

The big one, the center stage,  had to be 400-500 lbs.  We had three dolly platforms that we wheeled it out on.  It was all aluminum frame covered in mirrored polycarbonate on almost every surface.  That was such a cool set piece.

Doesn't seem like they'll face any issues with moving them thankfully.

If I'm remembering correctly, Broken Arrow used some type of four-wheeler to move their giant American flag in 2018.
