2. Vista Ridge HS

3. Hebron HS

4. Vandegrift HS

5. Marcus HS

6. The Woodlands HS

7. Cedar Ridge HS

8. Dripping Springs HS

9. Pearland HS

10. Coppell HS

11. Moe and Gene Johnson HS

12. Ronald Reagan HS

13. Prosper HS

14. Keller HS

First Out: LD Bell HS

Bubble: Bridgeland HS / Seven Lakes HS / Westlake HS / Waxahachie HS

Quick thoughts: I really think Vista Ridge is having a strong year, really cool show, brass is KILLER, and overall think they have a shot at medaling. Within the top 5, I think FM wins, music goes to Hebron, percussion to Marcus, visual to FM. Vandegrift is a question mark to me at this moment. The area D bands could be any sort of jumbled order come finals night, but my initial thoughts give CR the edge. I think Prosper actually has a chance to make finals, however, as always the bubble here is very large. Pearland should do well, placement is mainly a guess rn.

Obviously size isn't everything in a program, but it's crazy to see just how low these two programs are enrolment wise, compared to how successful they've been this season (and prior seasons)

Note, my list will look quite different for BOASA.

And I have to just say it - I've been a little disappointed in general with this year's shows. The heavily articulated music books interspersed with park and barks, with little continuity and melodic flow, is a trend I don't like to see. There are certain top bands - maybe just one - that has pushed this trend in recent years and it's irritating. I'm glad to see groups like Vista Ridge, North Shore, and Bridgeland, among others, buck the trend.

I'm always hesitant to mention this trend because I don't want to seem like I'm dunking on the programs for this, but I relate a bit to this. I speculate that it's a result of designing mainly for the (adjudication) sheets over the years (even though I'm sure many designers won't fully admit that). If you look at tons of shows from the mid-to-late 2000's to the mid 2010's, in general, you'll hear more cohesive music, more purposeful music selections with theme in mind, fewer section features, section features that fit into the context of the music, and demanding phrases for the full ensemble (sometimes with high velocity drill). That was happening with the old UIL sheets, which i think eventually led to placing a priority on designing for achievement. More and more, it seems to me, that designers are using formulas to maximize achievement and general effect and it has evolved show design to what it is now.  I see it in both drum corps and band. I don't hate it, but it's not usually my favorite flavor of show design.

Another part of it is that it's a lot to ask 250+ kids to learn hard drill while playing hard music. It's a lot to ask a drill writer to write for a 300+ member ensemble, especially when using the whole field is no longer the meta. And not every program can get students to buy into a super physically demanding show. I'm not sure a show like Spring 1993 will even happen again (As cool as it was, I'm not sure it should happen again), especially not with the 8-hour rule.

Good luck to all the 6A bands.  I'll be working from home and following what I can on streaming. :)

Same here!! And the kids don't have school today and tomorrow so my marcher will be too. So many great schools to cheer on. Good luck to everyone in 6A!
