That tubabone solo was so great!  I really loved hearing it, every time CP performed with Leander!  Really enjoyed your whole show of course.
And I'm already unreasonably excited about next year, too, it's going to be a lot of fun to see what the LISD bands come up with, along with everyone else around the state and country.  The kids are begging the directors to pull-in the Show Reveal, it didn't happen until May 8th last year and I don't think anyone can stand to wait that long this time.

takigan got a reaction from LeanderMomma in ATSSB?
Fun fact: Region 7 has 79 high schools within its boundaries.  All 79 of them are ATSSB schools (1A-4A schools....ZERO 5A or 6A high schools).  Region 6 directly west of them is slightly larger with 90 high schools.  Only five are 6A and four are 5A (nine in total).  Eight of these schools are located in Abilene, Odessa or Midland with one located in Wichita Falls.  That one HS is called Rider HS.  Rider is supposed to be in Region 7 with the other Wichita Falls ISD schools, but with them being the only TMEA school in Region 7, they elected to be in Region 6 instead with the other TMEA schools.  I believe this is the only instance in Texas where an ISD is split between 2 different regions (though correct me if I'm wrong).

Region 6 actually joint hosts their TMEA All-Region tryouts with Region 7 but none of the ATSSB schools in Region 7 elected to allow any of their kids to compete.

I've encircled the area covered by Region 6 and 7 in red.  You can even see the little gray splotch inside the blue area of Region 7. That gray splotch is Rider HS's attendance zone 😋.  As you can see it's a pretty massive chunk of the entire state.  Isn't it crazy that a geographic area this massive only contains five 6A high schools?

Sorry for the longer post and response....

If what I've heard from former students about Cartwright & instructional practices that were occurring - good riddance.

On another note - It's always interesting how there are a ton of other EXTREMELY successful "old school" band directors who did not and still do not resort to or utilize some of the methods that we all know are not just wrong for kids, but if we're really honest with ourselves, not just borderline, downright abusive.

There's a very big difference between holding students accountable / having high expectations and communicating that appropriately to CHILDREN at the high school age, and verbally accosting / screaming / threatening / etc. CHILDREN for the sake of 'the art'. Accountability is good, high expectations are good, when POSITIVELY reinforced by staff and students alike.

Also, I really dislike how in the band community we have turned "old school" into a massive diss - we would literally have NONE of the funding, facilities, voices at the decision making table, etc. if it weren't for all of the amazing and positive "old school" band directors across Texas and the country.

While we're at it, lets get REAL for second. Marching Band - It's not that deep. It's CHILDREN running around a football field wearing crazy costumes, throwing things in air, etc. to be a part of something bigger than themselves and a part of a band and guard family where everyone is accepted and appreciated. Sometimes we can forget that when we all get heated in recaps, have bad reps or rehearsals, whatever; at the end of the day, its just marching band. #LetsAllBeGoodPeople

It's a financial strain, for sure. When my daughter was at a Central Texas school, we had several trips in a row and I had to work a second job as we were volunteers that travelled with the guard to all of their football games and competitions, even the ones in Indianapolis and Dayton. But I will say that it was all worth it and if I had a chance to do it again, I would gladly do whatever it took. I certainly never had any opportunities like this when I was in high school and feel blessed that my daughter had the chance to go to the Grand Nationals twice, the WGI World Championships once, and march in the Rose Parade.

Going to GN as a spectator for the first time is an experience I can’t even fully describe!  I went the first time myself when Leander attended in 2016 and my band kiddo was a Senior and that was amazing for sure, but even better was taking her back to GN in 2019 as a spectator when Leander went back. She had amazing experiences both as a performer and as a spectator!  I do hope both you and Forney will be attending GN very soon!!

I'm not a Hornranker, but I know a lot of the guys who are.  I won't speak on behalf of their methods, but I will say a single breakout year doesn't get you instant clout. A good year will move you up the rankings, but you're going to hit a wall when comparing that breakout season against some of the really established bands at the top.  Being consistently good contest after contest, year after year is what gets you that high ranking

Marcus beat TWHS at State, but they lost to TWHS at BOA SA which does carry more weight because it's a national event.  So putting Marcus past TWHS probably isn't going to happen, especially when taking into account the huge gap between them at SA last year (which does factor in to the ranking).

Tarpon is an anomaly due to how disconnected they are from the rank and file, which makes them harder to peg.  In my opinion that lack of competing against good bands should count more against you than it currently does.  I think some of the rankers are using Tarpon's 2018 ranking to determine their position more than they really should be only due to the fact that it's all we have to go on when stacking them up against the rest (aside from 2022). one could make a solid case for Tarpon being beneath both TWHS and Marcus (and even Mason, who they lost to at Nats last year), and I think it could very well end up that way if TWHS (and other TX groups) upends some of the more established Midwestern bands (who've also beaten Tarpon) this weekend.

Scores have way too much relativity within their own contests to be a solid measuring stick across contests.  It's a tall order to say Marcus is better than the reigning caption-sweeping GN champion Carmel because of a cross-contest score technicality.

And to say Marcus is better than Hebron due to beating them at one non-BOA contest is just asking for trouble...but I don't think I need to tell you that considering the 2 schools in contention 😉.  Not saying that's what you're saying....just going down the list of bands in question.

takigan reacted to tubapop in A message to all Cy-Fair ISD band students who competed in state UIL and BOA SA this past week
This message is mostly aimed to students at Cy-Woods, Cy-Fair, and Bridgeland high schools. I'm a Bridgeland parent and I know many BL kids read this forum, and I imagine the CyWoods/CyFair kids do, too.
I am beyond proud of what our district is starting to do right now. In the 1990s and early 2000s, Houston had some of the best marching bands in the nation. Westfield, Spring, Langham Creek, Clements... nobody knew of Hebron, Vandegrift or Vista Ridge back then. But the directors at those great Houston schools eventually retired or moved on, and their programs declined quickly, with Langham Creek being the last to do so. CFISD's music program has struggled for 17 years, since Langham Creek HS was the big dog and was doing great things on the field. It's been nothing but tumbleweeds since then. But to see what these three bands have put on the field the past couple of years, and especially this year, it just makes me incredibly proud of how we are representing Cypress, CFISD, and Houston in general. It is a renaissance for CFISD and for Houston.
To the Cy-Fair HS kids: Your show this year was so outside-the-box. I've been following marching bands for a long time, and it's one of the most creative show designs I have ever seen. Everything was new, different, original. I have never heard so many kids from other bands "ooh" and "aah" over a show as I did at the area I contest a few weeks ago when you performed in the finals. I've never discussed the meaning of a show so often with parents from BL and other schools. That means you put ART on the field, and that's all in addition to the precision marching, the beautiful and tight woodwind runs, the beautiful brass sound, the amazing guard with its butterflies. It was just a complete package and, knowing we are friendly competition, I was sweating you guys all season and was a little relieved you weren't attending BOA SA - one less contender to worry about. I can't wait to see what you guys cook up next year. I know it's going to be absolutely incredible.
To the Cy-Woods HS kids: You put on a fantastically clean and modern show. The black and yellow popped on the field visually, and it complemented the block formations and diagonals so well. The cleanliness of the front ensemble was noteworthy, and my favorite moment might have been the trumpet-led brass section in the first 1/3 of the show, where you're standing in a diagonal formation on the right side of the field and are building up to a tense moment with a constantly crescendoing double-tonguing master class that is so, so clean and in unison--that is really difficult to pull off, but you did. I'm sure you are aware from the prelims scores that you were incredibly close to making the BOA SA finals. Maybe you felt a little disrespected this season in the judging, and I'm stressed about what that's going to make you do next year.
And to my Bridgeland kids: I can't say enough about you. The show was so beautiful this year. You achieved historic things. There's only one band in the history of Texas that has ascended so quickly from being a new school to being a state finalist - and that one band is Vandegrift. I remember when I was in marching band in HS, I didn't really understand the competing bands and what it meant to place at a certain level. But I hope that when you look at the list of state championship finalists and BOA SA finalists, that you understand what an elite level you are at right now. You were the new kid on the block and nobody knew who you were. And now, everyone knows who you are. In the countless times I walked back and forth from my hotel to the Alamodome this week, I spoke with parents from Hebron, Vandegrift, the Woodlands, students at the University of Houston, former Marcus students who are now in college... they were all so complimentary, and they all knew the name "Bridgeland." One of the UH kids used to play at Pearland and he was the most blunt about the 2022 show. He said, "Yeah, I saw Bridgeland was going on, and I was like, 'who's that?' But their show blew me away, I was like [expletive expletive! expletive!!!] That is AMAZING!" You are on the map now, kiddos. And I am willing to bet the directors are going to really kick it up a notch with next year's show. It is going to be incredible, and I hope you are setting your sights very high. If you're on Bridgeland neighborhood social media, you can see how proud the whole neighborhood is of you guys, with hundreds of likes and comments pouring in. Bravo on a job well done. I hope you never stop striving for greatness in life.
In closing: I'm so pleased to see how the schools in some other districts in our state support each other. Leander ISD, for example -- you'll see fans of all the different HS programs in this district cheering their hearts out for each other. As CFISD starts to re-gain prominence, I hope we do the same for each other. If Bridgeland didn't make the finals, I sure as heck was rooting for Cy Fair or Cy Woods to make it. Stick together and let's go head to head against these other districts that have dominated for too long. 😉 Here's to 2024!
