It's a tricky situation for them.  You go ahead and reschedule for let's say a Sunday or Monday but what happens if by Friday the rain is out of the forecast.  Then all the schools have to reschedule hotel rooms, take care of buses if they were using school buses, taking kids out of school on Monday and for some maybe they get in late on Monday night with school on Tuesday.  Ultimately you want it to run on Saturday so it's best to wait till the last minute to make your decision.  Being a band parent where we played Area a few hours away from the school you realized it was a risk.  Our area last year was miserable because it rained and was cold all day.  Thankfully they held out because they got it all done on Saturday.

The other thing to think about is if you move to Monday a lot of districts don't have enough buses for the bands to use on top of regular school day bus needs.  This means to attend you need to secure charter buses which is a huge additional expense that many programs can't afford.  For LISD just between Vista and Vandy they need close to 20 school buses.  When 5A happens it's even more since there are 4 programs.

Does UIL not realize band booster have jobs and we need request time off and jobs have rules on how many days before the requested day you have to make the request.

We've heard the decision will be made after the 10pm forecast Thursday night. Not sure if that helps you any.

And as we saw with BOA twice this season, the performance field being indoors does not prevent weather delays.

They would have to walk thru the weather to get to the indoor facility. This whole indoor solution was never really a solution.

We have wondered about the bus situation also. Most districts in our area are also either short on bus drivers or have just enough to cover the regular school routes.

One data point, when our band has to go to competitions during school days we always require charter buses. I'm not sure if it's buses or drivers (probably both) but they can't support the bands and all the school routes at the same time. When you step back and think about it, it makes total sense.

Sports teams have the coaches that can drive all/most of the buses. Band only has 3-4 directors and require twice as many buses

I think decisions are going to be aggressively made, even if Saturday starts to look "better".  Some bands had damaged equipment or lost out on a Finals run and I think the UIL is going to push to the make-up rain day and not repeat last year.  Most I think are Monday.

Ya, 4A Area B is Monday if it changes.

Ok but what do you want the alternative to be lol?

Area makeup dates have always been weekdays for many many years. I feel for the parents and boosters who can’t take off but also…what’s the alternative? Bands have KNOWN the makeup dates for years now since they’re usually the Monday after barring a few exceptions in a few areas. Bands have KNOWN this was a possibility. This isn’t some last minute decision. Through all of the 2010s this has been a contingency and widely used as the worst imaginable case scenario.

Is it a good system? No! But what ELSE is left? Genuinely nothing…..at least be thankful UIL is trying to hold a fair contest instead of resorting to a system that doesn’t incorporate student performance.

If BDs are complaining about it being indoor and it’s too rainy for students to safely compete on Saturday….then what’s left?

They can’t move it to next Saturday because bands across the state already have paid for, budgeted and have planned competitions for that date already. You can’t ask every band in the state with a postponement to just forgo a planned competition because of UIL.

Sorry I’m just a little lost on what we’re complaining about here and I’m trying to figure out in earnest and honestly what you think the better solution is here.

Lost is lost. Come on, that’s funny. I’m on your side. It is what it is. They just need to wait as long as possible and move as a last resort.

Annnnnnnnd. We all know who is to blame here! It’s all these karens and timmys that bring umbrellas to hot and sunny competitions and sit right in front of me and open the umbrellas obstructing my view!

….sometimes it’ll be freezing with cloud cover and they will still have umbrellas. Truly puzzling. Not on topic but there’ll never be enough time for me to complain about random umbrella users.

oh so no final?

Last year Area F got rained out. They finished prelims, but canceled finals. Top 5 bands in prelims went to state.

They will wait the weather out. I think the cutoff time to have a round be complete is around midnight.  It may just mean no finals round.
