  1. The only thing I'm for certain is that Vandegrift, Vista Ridge and Cedar Park are on a different level, at least on a UIL sheet. First things first... It's just INSANE to me that all three of those schools in the same DISTRICT have equally unbelievable marching ensemble sounds (especially brass). In prelims, Vandegrift was insanely gorgeous and was a clear first. They are starting to have a blend that reminds me of Marcus. However, in finals, they lost some of their momentum and dropped to 3rd but were still fabulous. In finals, Vista brought their refreshing energy to the field and it too was absolutely jaw dropping. Just some insane, rip roaring chords. Cedar Park in both performances displayed their signature field confidence and in your face sound, and ended up the middle man both times. Love how lush their ensemble sounds on that Barber and Tchaik. It's ultimately going to come down to the performance.... I'm confident one of these three will be the state champion next Tuesday, folks
  2. After watching Marcus and Bell, agreed. The only thing that could hold TW back is the visual, but it seems like they are cleaner at this point than they were with Uninvited two years ago.
  3. I'd have to guess it's because Broken Arrow is ending their season much earlier than usual-- their show, from what I hear, isn't as demanding as usual. They're skipping out on Indy to go play at Carnegie Hall in the spring.
  4. Cedar Park 2008. The ultimate example of effect without props and a huge color guard. They brought to the table stellar music arrangements, an unbelievable high school hornline and percussion section and CLEAN, high velocity drill. No props needed. The show still amazes me.
  5. good god... how could I forget?!?! Sometimes its due to music rights....sometimes its due to the "protection of artistic vision," if you will. HQ vids of TW and Bowie are usually released at the end of the season. Marcus and Bell videos: some years good videos get posted and are removed, other times they stay up.
  6. I totally agree, please just ignore my unintentionally biting comment
  7. this is very true, my post came across way more demeaning than I intended . My apologies!

  9. I have nothing against Cedar Ridge. Last year they also placed very, very well at Conroe, and then missed finals at San Antonio by quite a bit, indicating they most likely peaked early. Historically, bands like CTJ and Woodlands, especially Woodlands, have shows that are brilliantly designed but are a beautiful disaster in the early season due to the insane visual/overall demand that their shows have. By the time San Antonio rolls around, CTJ/The Woodlands are MUCH more comfortable performing their visual, which then allows for some incredible playing as well. The same can be said about Hebron this year. Their music book is jaw-droppingly demanding (the most demanding I've seen all year, in my opinion) and has some moments that are ridiculously exposed. They struggled with tears at the beginning of the season and even at Conroe. Those that have seen the difference between Hebron at Conroe and Hebron at DFW can agree that their show is just one that needs time to grow and develop.. One week of rehearsal made an insane difference musically. For the Top 5 at San Antonio the past few years, "slow and steady" has been the name of the game; Suffer in the early season in hopes of being unbelievably glorious in November. And it is definitely working for them, in my opinion.
  10. I know I just want to compare the arrangements!
  11. I think we have a pretty obvious top 5--Marcus, Woodlands, Bell, CTJ, Hebron (no particular order). Predicting 6th is where I run into trouble.. Has Round Rock widened the gap with Vandegrift since BOA Austin? Will Cedar Park rise over both Round Rock and Vandegrift? Will Cedar Ridge WOW everyone once again and place 6th? What will the fate of Reagan and Flower Mound be? SO many possibilities!! It's a great thing that this regional has 14 finalists, otherwise this contest would be consistently harder than Nationals, in my opinion.
  12. I'm sure we will get a bigger glimpse this weekend, as Region for the LISD bands is this Saturday. In my opinion, I just can't see any other of the LISD schools topping Cedar Park and Vandegrift. Historically, Cedar Park has an unmatched drill velocity (on the UIL track), a HUGE sound and jaw-dropping visual cleanliness. Vandegrift has one of the coolest music books I've heard all season, a kick @*$ show design and, considering their staff, has the potential to have some unbelievable brass power. On top of that, both Vandegrift and Cedar Park placed in the top 3 at 4A honor band. What an unbelievable district for band artistry! However, like others have said, both could fall at the hands of Dripping Springs. I am intrigued for a side-by-side comparison of all 3 bands-- especially CP and Dripping, as they are playing some of the same music. what an insane season for both BOA and UIL. Best of luck to all!
  13. I'm gonna have to agree with you as well, but only on the UIL track. I believe Vandegrift has enough going on in terms of design to be able to push over CP at BOA, but I think CP will likely take over Vandy at area or state, depending on when they get to their signature level of execution. I love both bands this year and it's gonna be very cool to see how things turn out between them........ But yeah I'll go ahead and say the 4A champion will be from LISD
  14. I was thinking about San Antonio/Nationals. It's a pretty obvious fact that the past couple years The Woodlands has had very high levels of velocity in their drill compared to others. If it comes down to between Marcus and TW at SA and Indy, would the demand of TW's show (if it is executed at higher levels than in the pas) help push them past the incredible refinement of Marcus?
  15. Texas bands: Marcus, The Woodlands, Bowie, Claudia Taylor Johnson, Bell (maybe not as much anymore) Outside of Texas: Broken Arrow, Avon
  16. Aram Khachaturian.... Symphony 3? I think I read that somewhere. Positive about the composer, Not sure about the symphony # This show is going to be something else in November
  17. Vista Ridge, Vandegrift and CP are ALL vulnerable to peaking early. Any band is, really. It's all about who can keep this momentum up through that final week before BOA SA and UIL State. It will be quite the interesting season for LISD. Just wait and see, people.
  18. Wow, TW is absolutely flying across the field and its only September! I guess we should expect difficult shows from them by now, but that looks like it will be on the level of "Sequenza" craziness. Super intrigued now.
  19. Definitely agree on this one, can't believe I left DS out
  20. Never a bad time to make some crazy predictions.. let's liven this place up a little bit! This is all just for fun so no one take this too seriously. 1) The Woodlands and Marcus duke it out between San Antonio and Nationals. One of them brings the Eagle back home 2) A new regional champion at BOA Austin 3) The UIL 4A State Championship trophy is a toss up between Friendswood, Vandegrift, and Cedar Park 4) Round Rock joins the ranks as a Grand National Finalist anyone else got anything?
  21. Could we see these three dominating UIL in the fall?
  22. Anyone have any commentary about the finals bands?
