Oh boy, it's been awhile since I've been on here. Good to be back!

Anyways, I don't think this will be the case. Looking at the 6A Area C performance order (which was published before any Region contests took place), there are 17 bands that intend to participate in the Area contest. The UIL rule for advancing to state basically says that for every 5 bands at Area, 1 advances to state, with a minimum of 2 advancing. This means that Area C will advance 3 bands assuming all 17 bands advance to the Area contest. Of those 17, the five 6A bands in Regions 2 and 25 performed Saturday and all earned 1st divisions and will advance. The remaining 12 (11 in Region 3 and 1 in Region 21) have their Region contests tomorrow (Nov. 18th), but I find it unlikely that any 3 of those would fail to advance to Area and thus have only 14 bands at Area and causing only two would advance.

Bottom line: we will most likely see all three Lewisville ISD powerhouses in San Antonio. Sorry if that's a lot of information, we're not doing UIL so I've got way too much time on my hands.

The amount of State Qualifiers from an Area depends on how many programs qualify for Area and not how many actually attend the contest.

Plano, Plano East, Plano West and Allen got 1s at Region. Although they are choosing not to advance, their qualification still counts. Assuming the 17 who intend to do Area all get 1s, you add those to the four listed above who qualified, that makes 21 Area qualifiers. This translates to 4 bands advancing from Area C to State.

  2. This all could change dramatically if All-Conference State Contest is approved next year. At the UIL Music Committee Meeting in October, tentative scheduling (absolutely not approved yet) was discussed and would put 6A State and Nationals on the same week for 2021. Combine that with programs who may feel extra pressure from their District because they opted out of UIL this year and certain programs may have to choose between one event or the other.

We don’t have a decision on 2021 State for awhile. Superintendents from the even-numbered conferences need to be surveyed before anything moves forward. This will be interesting to watch over the next several months.

  3. Looks like they cancelled the events.

    From their website:

The Director’s Choice plans to host several marching band contests this fall has been met with excitement from bands across the southwest United States. The design sessions have been spirited and productive with many insightful ideas being considered. The assistance and input from so many educators has been welcome and very helpful. However, at this time we have made the difficult decision to postpone until the fall of 2021 due to the continued concerns regarding the augmented spread of COVID-19 in the communities we serve.”

Very good insights on this podcast!!!  I had not thought of the hotel logistics you described.  Got me to wondering if all your logic and good points as to why San Antonio hotels are not staffed to handle BOA this year, then how would they be staffed to handle a UIL contest this year either?  Plus the extra bus, parking, and fans in stands concerns you raised.  Makes me think UIL state contests might not happen.

UIL does not have the “business obligation” like BOA does to provide the City of San Antonio with X amount of occupied hotel rooms. Programs are kind of on their own for State Contest.

What will make things interesting is if UIL decides to condense their 6A State Contest to one day instead of Prelims one day and Finals the next.

Tons of other factors and decisions need to be made well before we can think about talking State Contest.
