Because of stuff like this.... Cinco Ranch senior sparks benefit Katy ISD bands are raising funds for El Paso school By HELEN ERIKSEN Houston Chronicle Correspondent Jill Hegedus, a senior at Cinco Ranch High School in Katy (suburb of Houston), helped organize a fundraiser for students in an El Paso marching band. She hopes to light a fire in students involved in other programs such as sports to take on similar projects to help those at disadvantaged schools. The idea to hold a fundraiser came to Hegedus, 18, after she learned that some students at Mountain View High School in El Paso, where 100 percent of students qualify for free and reduced-priced lunches, could not be in the marching band program because they didn't have enough instruments. The Cinco Ranch Cougar band leadership team decided to hold a band showcase where all six Katy high school bands would come together at Rhodes Stadium in Katy to perform. Students have branded the event "Paws Out for Mountain View Lobo Band." Cinco Ranch will collect a $2 donation from people who attend the event, to be held from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday. All proceeds will go to the Mountain View Lobo Band. Hegedus said her fellow marching band members, a group of 300, were eager to help after learning about the disparity between their program and the Mountain View program, which has 88 members. "I think it's important to be socially conscious," said Hegedus, who plays bass clarinet. "Sometimes I feel like we live in a bubble here in Cinco Ranch, and it's important to see others' needs when we have so much to give." To promote the showcase, students made posters, wrote stories in the school newspaper and talked to classmates. Cinco Ranch band director Mike Ouellette told Hegedus about Mountain View's need. He heard about it from a colleague when he went to El Paso for a band contest two years ago. Ouellette hopes that the fundraiser will not only raise money but also awareness about less-fortunate students and what can be done to help them. He said the Mountain View band would be larger if it could afford to purchase more instruments. Because the school is in an area populated with migrant workers, sometimes the youths are left unsupervised when parents are working, he said. "Children who are involved in band tend not to be involved in bad things," he said. Hegedus, who is in the top 14 percent of her class, said being in band has strengthened her commitment to school and improved her time-management skills. "I have definitely matured a lot and I have learned to deal with all kinds of people," she said. "Band teaches you discipline and helps you to become more outgoing." Katy Independent School District executive director of fine arts Bob Bryant believes students benefit from belonging to art programs, such as band, and that art is valuable for helping them interpret the world they live in. "An effective education in the fine arts helps students to see what they look at, hear what they listen to and feel what they touch," he said. Katy students receive a big perk from participating in the showcase, Ouellette said. "It's a chance for the kids to see each others' shows before we go for our competitions on Oct. 23," he said. Ouellette said his students have already raised about $500 by going around the cafeteria during lunchtime to collect donations from students. Donations of cash or instruments can be made by calling Ouellette at 281-237-5046. ---------------- From the Cinco Ranch Band website: The Story The idea for the event was inspired by our students after Michael Ouellette, our band director, shared a story with his students after judging a UIL competition in West Texas last fall. He judged a band that was very obviously in need of normal band items. The uniforms where threadbare, the instruments were in poor working order and the band in general seemed to have a lot of issues. When he talked with the chairperson in charge of that region, she explained that the school was very happy with their director and band program even though they did not earn very good ratings. She went on to explain that most of the students in the band lived in shacks without running water

A lot of great Texas programs representing the state in Indianapolis for Grand Nationals. I feel that total domination or sweeping captions is stretching it a bit. Great things are going on down here, but the same goes for the Midwest bands (Avon, Carmel, Lawrence Central, Plymouth Canton, and etc....) as well as the defending National Champion, Broken Arrow. It's not going to be easy. Grand Nationals is getting tougher and tougher each year. I am pulling for a Texas band to win the Music caption again (to show that we have some fine music educators down here) and to win Grand Nationals. But first and foremost, I'm just proud that we have some fine programs representing our state in Indy and we should all be celebrating that. What a way to end a chapter in BOA history (with the demolition of the RCA Dome) with a fine year that we have in 2007. Looking forward to Lucas Oil Stadium in 2008! -
Yeah, I saw Cypress Falls. They had a strong performance at UIL Region. One of my favorite parts in the show was when there was a door slam sound effect and then you see all of the door props shutting automatically. It was pretty creepy. They utilized "The Shining" theme very well. Overall, Cy Falls has great show both musically and visually. This is my favorite show from the band since 2004's "Same Difference." They will be in the running for a Finalist spot at the BOA Super Regional.

Looks like a great line-up. A few heavy hitters in the last block with Cedar Park, Cypress Falls, Duncanville & Langham Creek. I saw all of the Cypress schools yesterday and they all looked and sounded great. I Hope Cypress Woods does well. They have a great show this year. I saw them at BOA Houston as well as Region 27 and I can't get enough of it. -

Houston area folks should know what I'm talking about but..... A show band that I always enjoy watching is Willowridge HS from Houston (Fort Bend ISD). They're a world renowned show band and even performed in exhibition at the BOA Houston Regional in 2005. Great group!

Great performance. I figured you guys had an incomplete show today. Looking forward to seeing the full show at BOA San Antonio.

Some fabulous stuff went on at Region 17..... Dickinson Dickinson performed the music of Respighi's 'Feste Romane' and 'Church Windows.' There were issues with individual trumpet players sticking out and not in tune. But overall, the band had a strong performance. They should be advancing out of Area F once again. Just clean up the music issues and you guys will be fine at State.. Friendswood Friendswood had a gorgeous ensemble sound...one of the best I've heard all season. I saw the band a couple of weeks ago at BOA and the band tonight when compared to the one at BOA was like night and day. The music execution was there. The band didn't perform the entire show tonight. They stopped right after the ballad. Looking forward to see the show in its entirety. From what I saw tonight, the show is worthy of a Finalist spot at State. Clear Brook It felt like the band was holding back on their sound tonight. I didn't get the same volume tonight like I did in Prelims at the BOA Houston. But overall, it was a strong performance in other areas. I love the percussion section and the color guard, as well as the bass effect coming from the synth. Outstanding soloists! Clear Brook's on-field warm up 'Adagio for Strings' gave me the first goosebumps of the day. Looking forward to seeing the band again at the BOA San Antonio Super Regional and BOA Grand Nationals in Indianapolis. Brazoswood There have been few times where I've teared up during a marching show but I did just that when Brazoswood took the field. The opening intro from "The Passion" and Eric Whitacre's "Water Night" did it for me. I was literally shaking because of how emotional the music was. The band had an astonishing sound---tone quality, balance, and clarity were all there. You could tell that Brazoswood had an "on" performance. I felt the energy in the stands. Can't wait to see the full BOA version of the program at the Super Regional in San Antonio. It's an all around great show. The design, the execution, and the effects are all there. You can find the rest of my pics on my Facebook at: http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=1002...0887&ref=mf
