  1. You can find all the info on the National Concert Band Festival and Percussion Festival on the website. NCBF: http://www.musicforall.org/Programs/MFANF/NCBF.aspx NPF: http://www.musicforall.org/Programs/MFANF/NPF.aspx As for Cypress Falls' percussion, I've seen them my share of times over the years and they have one of the best percussion ensembles in the country. Not just in marching band but in the indoor setting as well.
  2. The pre-recorded music in Westfield's show this past year happened during the "set up/warm up" time and not the actual judged portion of the show.
  3. Where have you heard pre-recorded music before? Because pre-recorded music is banned in BOA, UIL, USSBA, and pretty much every other marching circuit. If electronics is passed, I'm sure DCI will do the same and ban it. Now, sound effects that are recorded are fine because it's not music.
  4. That's what I was thinking. If anything, electronics makes it even more challenging. I'm talking about a synthesizer that's actually being played by someone rather than sound effects. Playing a synthesizer (which plays like a piano) takes as much talent as playing any other instrument. I recommend watching any of Ronald Reagan's shows from 2001-2004.
  5. Nope, we missed by one spot. We were in Area F and Friendswood, Santa Fe, and Dickinson were the three that advanced from F that year. That was probably the funnest year of marching band I had in high school though with all the BOA's, USSBA's, UIL's, and etc.
  6. You're super lucky if you get the opportunity to qualify for State two years in a row. When I was in high school, I only had ONE opportunity to qualify for State. We were a 5A school during my freshman year of high school (1999). Obviously, we couldn't go to State in '99 because that was a 4A year. UIL realigned the classes in 2000 and we were bumped down to Class 4A for 2000 and beyond. 2000 was a 5A State year (we were moved down to 4A), 2001 was 4A (our only chance to qualify for State, and 2002 was a 5A State year.
  7. As a spectator, this was probably the busiest fall season for me since graduating from high school five years ago. I miss marching season but certainly not the traveling. BOA Houston - October 6th Laredo Marching Festival - October 13th UIL Region 17 (Pearland) - October 16th UIL Region 27 (Cypress) - October 20th UIL Region 9 (Conroe) - October 23rd USSBA Texas State (Pearland) - October 27th BOA San Antonio - November 2nd-3rd BOA Grand Nationals (Indianapolis, Indiana) - November 15th-17th Physically exhausting at times but well worth it in the end.
  8. Too easy. Adagio for Strings (Samuel Barber) Medea (Samuel Barber) Grohg (Aaron Copland) That's neat. Same exact repertoire that Stephen F. Austin did in 2005. SFA's show was entitled, "Dance Symphony", and they opened with Grohg, Adagio for Strings as the ballad, and Medea as the closer.
  9. You can find the schedule to NTCA (North Texas Color Guard Association) competitions at the following link. http://www.ntca-online.com/schedules.aspx
  10. Agreed with the point. But just to clarify....2005 was the Bluecoats' best year score wise.
  11. A sweater from Banana Republic, gift card to Amazon.com, 300 dollars (I have an extremely large family), and a Best Buy gift card and basket of homemade oatmeal raisin cookies that my friend just dropped by. She's too nice.
  12. While I don't agree with the overall results from State that year, please keep in mind that the UIL judging system is MUCH different than every other marching circuit in the country. It has nothing to do with politics.
  13. Regarding the rule proposals: General Effect Double Panel: For Honestly, I would love to see a double judging panel at DCI Regionals and World Championships. Age Requirements for 2009 implementation: For Use of Water and other water based products: For I'm all for creativity in drum corps. As long as it's in a tasteful manner and does not create problems for the marching surface. Additional time for shows: For Amplification for Brass: For Amplifying brass instruments adds another layer of color to the music. Just think about Lassiter 2002 and Westfield 2003 with the amped french horns and the trumpet soloist in L.D. Bell 2006 that was amped with the vocoder. UNIQUE sounds. Use of Electronics: For Again, I'm all for creativity and innovation in drum corps. Adding the use of synthesizer, mallet kats, electronic drum pads, and etc adds another of color to the music. Eliminate Percussion 2 judge: For Sound Board controlled by corps members only: For -------- Prohibit use of amplified voice, breathing, effects, and etc: Against Ban all use of amplification: Against Why limit and put a cap on the activity? I know there's a difference between marching band and drum corps. But in my opinion, you're not a marching band until you're marching woodwinds. Adding electronics does not make you a marching band. I'm all about pushing the envelope and stepping outside the box. Most of the shows in drum corps as of late have lost me on an emotional level. That's why I love marching band more because you get to see ALL types of shows and be connected in different ways on an emotional level. Wes Cartwright said it best on the BOA Podcast several weeks ago. http://www.musicforall.org/multimedia/podc...reakranks15.mp3
  14. Just a little map I designed:
  15. Scroll all the way down on the San Antonio list and go to your school, Winston Churchill. You can order the individual DVD of your bands Prelims performance which comes with both the high and multi camera angles.
  16. They're probably just alternating the dates for the two Regional from now on. Just making it a little easier for the bands in both the Houston and Dallas areas. That way Houston bands don't have to travel all the way to Dallas every year for a mid-October Regional and vice versa with Dallas bands traveling to Houston for a later Regional.

  20. To me, it's an art form. I like to view the football field as the palette and the band/corps/color guard as the color.
  21. Dave Matthews Band Incubus Lifehouse Train L.D. Bell HS Ronald Reagan HS Stephen F. Austin HS
  22. I asked the same question on the BOA Forums last year. You can find a lot of responses at the following link. http://forums.bands.org/vb/showthread.php?t=3589 My question was at the bottom of page 1. The replies are on page 2-9.
  23. Anyone on here a member of Ars Nova's Open Winter Guard from last season (or anyone that knows the answer to my question)? I was wondering what music was being used in the show? Into the Sublime is hands down my favorite guard show, ever. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-z9gl0oIDOs Saw the show at the WGI Houston Regional and wow. Would LOVE to see a marching band tackle that music and concept (which was yoga).
  24. I wouldn't be surprised if we see less than three Texas bands at Grand Nationals next year. Stephen F. Austin, Richland & Ronald Reagan just went this year and I highly doubt they'll be going next year. Stephen F. Austin and Richland have never gone to Grand Nationals in consecutive years and Ronald Reagan is splitting with Lady Bird Johnson HS next year. The Woodlands have gone the past two years (2006 & 2007). L.D. Bell with three years (2005, 2006 & 2007). Although, I hope The Woodlands and L.D. Bell keep the streak alive and keep on going. Winston Churchill went in 2006. The last time they went to GN prior to 2006 was in 2002. Haltom & Westfield are due for a trip to Grand Nationals. The last time that those two bands went were in 2002 and 2003, respectively. I hope James Bowie, John B. Connally, and Cypress Falls goes again. And, I would love to see some new Texas faces in Indianapolis---Brazoswood, Cedar Park, Harlingen, Hebron, and Marcus.
