  1. I listened to this a few days ago and I figured that our (TWHS) director had listened to it as well as she said something to us that was similar to what you said but she just played your comments for the entire band! Figured you'd enjoy hearing that.
  2. The Woodlands - We do On the Waterfront again but instead of it being about being on a waterfront or personalities or whatever it was about (I was in it and don't even know...) it's about the sailors from On the Town going to war in the Pacific against Japan. We could even use the same props, just replacing "New York New York" to "Mid-way Mid-way" and give it an ocean backdrop instead. I meant Midway! Not Midland, whoops
  3. I was thinking Tarpon Springs before remembering that they're 2A so I went ahead and found out all 3A champions... Only thing is that all of them were before 2009 (the year that class 4A became a thing) so if you were wondering if any 3A band has won since then, the answer is unfortunately no. Here's the list of what 3A bands have won in the past. Rocky Mount 1986 PCEP 1990-91 Spring 1993 Center Grove 1995 Lake Park 1996 Lassiter 1998 PCEP 1999 Marian Catholic 2000 Lawrence Central 2001 Lassiter 2002 Westfield 2003 Lawrence Central 2004 Carmel 2005 Broken Arrow 2006 LD Bell 2007 Avon 2008
  4. Yes but they also beat the competition by 10 points and their score is likely deflated because of the competition they were against (though this season has proven that we can trust scores from contest to contest... Mostly)
  5. Can we talk about Indy weather for a second? It's supposed to have a high of 45 and a low of 32... The entire 3 days of the competition is gonna be just as bad with a lowest low of 26 and highest high of 49. Lemme tell ya, not looking forward to the walks between the convention center and the stadium this season
  6. I figured I'd bring this back. Idea not mine, originally from MadisonBandMan1 (I think). No need to limit it to finalists only! Best general effect: Best visual: Best music: Best visual concept: Best show idea/concept: Best solo: Best feature: Best musical selection: Most innovative show: Most original concept: Best crowd appeal: Most underrated: Most improved: Best colorguard: Best pit: Best drumline: Best brass: Best woodwinds: Best prop: Best uniforms: Best guard uniforms: Best overall pre-show: Best overall opener: Best overall ballad: Best overall closer:
  7. The difference in scores between the two is even more drastic in prelims: Vandegrift: Ind: 19.2 (2) Ens: 18.8 (3) Hebron: Ind: 19.1 (3) Ens 18.15 (13) The Woodlands: Ind: 19.3 (1) Ens: 18.25 (11) Pearland: Ind: 18.3 (12) Ens: 17.25 (32) It's interesting to see just how much the lack of field mics effect the scores. All of the top 3 bands in individual music didn't use them yet had a significantly lower ensemble music score. I didn't really notice a difference between Vandegrift's and Vista Ridge's volume but we were watching from a poor angle (we only saw those two and CTJ, and CTJ's speakers were pointed away from us so I can't give that great of an opinion on them).
  8. There was a lot to take in from this contest, especially for me personally. I can firmly say that I am really proud of our band for making 8th and what I believe is the highest score we've gotten here in the last 4 years? I'm not completely sure. Congratulations to all the bands that made finals (especially Pearland and RR) and a great job by everyone that participated in the contest. Typically I'd be against participation awards but here when there's so many good bands that don't get recognized at finals it is almost necessary. It kinda sucks to see bands like Coppell and Cedar Ridge miss out on finals. I really liked both of their shows. I've still got some mad respect for Cedar Park after that video of them finishing their show without being able to see a thing thanks to a powet outage. I can't tell y'all how ecstatic I am about finally beating Flower Mound after losing to them every single year. I'm sure they felt pretty bad about getting 9th following their amazing achievements these past 4 years but there's absolutely nothing to be ashamed of when you're at a competition like this. Nothing about that score or ranking takes anything away from their show, performance, or hard work they spent to get there. Looking at the scores... Prelims is a complete mess. Scoring is so all over the place but that's been the case at every competition this year so I'm not really surprised. I always find it interesting to see how judges tend to agree more in finals than prelims, namely Reagan's jump from 7th in music in prelims to 2nd in finals. That's not to say that they didn't deserve it. It was well earned and having watched their show a few times I agree with it. I'm still a bit shocked by how "low" Hebron placed musically (quotations cause 5th is not low by any means) simply because of how difficult it is. I don't think there will ever be a band that can play anything as challenging as that and make it sound THAT good. Congrats to Vista Ridge for getting 3rd, though I can't say I agree with it entirely. I got to see them live and personally I thought they were pretty dirty. What they were doing was really cool and looked really hard, but I saw quite a lot of mistakes (or at least what I thought were mistakes) visually which makes me wonder about their individual visual placement. Maybe it's because I haven't really seen many bands live that I disagree with the judges there. Otherwise spectacular performance and still deserving of 3rd overall. That's just about all my thoughts put down. Good luck to team Texas at GN in two weeks, I hope we all see each other at finals!
  9. I somehow forgot Hebron... Who in the world knows how I managed to do that
  10. Allen seems to be one of those bands that are really trying to get into more competitive marching and ooo boy, if they can manage to play louder individually then there's no beating their volume. Seriously though. Last year we had a football game against them at the same time as Region Band auditions and they announced that unfortunately they'll ONLY be performing with 500 of their marchers on the field. They had 300 of their members trying out for region. That's the size of our entire band. That is INSANE.
  11. I've heard a lot about staff changes and director changes and drill writer changes pretty frequently on here but they're almost always a big deal. Something I have almost never seen however is anyone mentioning a choreographer change. I figured that it'd be a bigger deal considering how much the choreography effects the show. I have a feeling that it's a bit different in TWHS compared to other schools because while it was never made that big of a deal and we transitioned fine, we had three choreographers between the start of 2016 to the end of 2017. Or at least I think we did cause I don't really remember the first one. The second stuck to more basic choreography that you see in the big hits of On The Waterfront and In The Garden. Then there's the third that we have now that's a bit more theatrical (and we absolutely love him). The show we ended up with each year would have been quite different depending on which choreographer we had. However it was never brought up as far as I'm aware and the same goes for many other bands I assume. Any thoughts?

  13. Now that it's not a secret I'm really liking our new sailor outfits for TWHS. It feels more comfortable than our old uniform and completely changes our show.
  14. I don't think you can really call those bands "local" just because they didn't perform at Nationals, or rather because they don't get the opportunity to perform at Nationals every year.
  15. The person that uploaded it decided to remove both my comment and the directors comment so we'll see if it gets taken down due to copyright
  16. 1. Oak Ridge 2. Brazoswood 3. North Shore 4. Spring 5. Pasadena Memorial 6. Porter 7. Klein Oak 8. Klein Collins 9. College Park 10. Willis 11. Dickinson GE: Oak Ridge Visual: Oak Ridge Music: Oak Ridge Percussion: Oak Ridge Auxiliary: Klein Collins Oak Ridge had a solid 2 point gap above Brazoswood with an 82.something and a majority of the bands in finals scored in the mid-upper 70s.
  17. That just implies that they're good technically but the show needs a bit more and I'm sure those last two movements will do just that.
  18. There's a forum for this on the upcoming contests forum, could we use that instead?
  19. All depends on how well they do at the Lonestar Preview as it'll be their first competition (at least I THINK it will be). If they show up and score anything above a 90 then they'll have a good shot at making finals, not to mention that it was only three years ago that they made finals at UIL State (Different contest, I know, but still impressive!).
  20. That applies to just about any of the past few years. Flomo in 2018, 2016 and 2015, CTJ in 2017. If every SA champion went to GN the same year, Texas bands winning eagles would no longer be a rare occasion.
  21. I haven't seen a show of y'all's yet but there is a lot of hype surrounding your band every year so I'm excited to see what it builds up to this season. We might even see you perform, if the schedule allows
  22. Crazy to think that THAT many LISD bands are defending champions of something or other!
