I heard this is the week when a number of school districts will announce they’re going non-competitive. Who knows if my rumor mill will bear out, but something to be on the lookout for.

I’ve also heard that are a number of other school districts that would be ready to announce a totally non-competitive season as a group, but for one or maybe two schools holding on.

At this point, nothing surprises me.

  2. My daughter will be a senior this year. She is involved in guard for her band. She also runs track and cross country. Her cross country coach has already started a training plan for the team and they start up tomorrow. I see the football team and volleyball team starting up all over the state. How do you keep these kids motivated for band?

So how are you keeping their spirits up right now?

  3. I listened to this last night.  A couple of thoughts.

    • I hear what you are saying about stadiums and the cost of cleaning them.  However, I think that we may be overthinking the cleaning.  Most regional BOA contests in Texas are held in the heat.  Depending on what we see in the next two weeks with athletes and band starting up, the heat may do a lot to kill Covid for us. Heck looking out my office window right now, I see the Westwood football team running drills in the Warrior Bowl!
    • I can see an element of not being in the stands for BOA San Antonio or any other place that is enclosed.

Like you said, we are gonna learn a lot over the next few weeks. With college football players being diagnosed with Covid as soon as they are returning to camp, we are gonna learn just how many of them fully recover, plus how many of them are truly sick.

I will remain positive, because that's what I do!  Thanks for the podcast..again..another good episode!

This is definitely a tough time for everyone around the world, and chances are, it could get even tougher.  HOWEVER, I do feel saddened for our Texas groups who would have been attending the 2020 WGI World Championships in Dayton, OH.  The competition was cancelled earlier this afternoon.

"At the direction of Dayton & Montgomery County Public Health, and in consultation with the Ohio Department of Health, and Governor DeWine, WGI Sport of the Arts is canceling the 2020 WGI World Championships for Color Guard, Percussion, and Winds.  The numbers involved in an event of this magnitude urge caution in light of recent national and international health concerns. Over nine days of competition, groups from 41 states and five countries would travel with over 16,000 participants.  While we are deeply saddened to cancel these prestigious events, our priority is, and always has been the health and well-being of all those involved with our organization...…."

I'm heartbroken for these guards...especially the seniors.  So sad.

  5. Yes, prelims are Thursday and Friday ending with a ceremony Friday night where the drum majors do a retreat and the 36 or so semi finalists are announced. Saturday morning thru afternoon is semi finals, again ending with a drum major retreat and class awards along with the announcement of the 12 finalists. After a dinner break, finals begin. Saturday at Grand Nats is very similar in set up to BOA San Antonio on Saturday. Thursday and Friday are much more laid back there.

I’m thinking of flying out after work on Friday and just doing all day Saturday in Lucas Oil.

    DO IT!

  6. A couple of things I'd like to bring up before the next weekend of guard competitions.

    • LeanderMomma..it was awesome to see you again!
    • Westwood got a 1.75 time point deduction.  So they would have medalled without it :(
    • Please tell your friends and family to DOUBLE CHECK THEIR SCHOOLS PERFORMANCE TIMES WITH WHAT IS ON THE WEBSITE. This is very much true for the middle school guard performances.  We had so many disappointed parents show up 30-40 minutes late because they listened to their color guard instructors who were flat out wrong.   TCGC runs a super tight..on time ship. They are never late.

It was a fun event.  So glad some of y'all could make it!
