  1. I've been to Legacy stadium once when it first opened. IIRC, the seating area is also double decked, so the shade isn't only dependent on the press box.
  2. So I did a rough and tumble guide for this weekend if you are viewing via FLO: I'd do something like (note times are Central time): 7:30 - Houston - College Park 7:45 - Houston - Dawson 8:00 - DFW - Keller 8:30 - Houston - Westfield 8:45 - DFW - Waxahachie 9:45 - Houston - James E Taylor 10:00 - Houston - Oak Ridge 10:15 - DFW - Hebron 11:00 - DFW - Marcus 11:15 - Houston - The Woodlands 11:30 - Houston - Stephen F Austin 12:45 - DFW - Prosper 1:00 - Houston - Pearland 1:15 - Houston - Clear Brook 1:30 - DFW - Owasso 2:00 - Houston - Cypress Falls Fourth blocks are outstanding at both shows, so tough choices.... 3:00 - DFW - LD Bell Houston - Westwood 3:15 - Houston - Cy-Fair 3:30 - DFW - Coppell 3:45 - DFW - Timber Creek Houston - Brazoswood 4:00 - Houston - Westlake 4:30 - Houston - Seven Lakes 4:45 - DFW - Flower Mound Houston - Ronald Reagan I didn't hit every timeslot, and these are what I would probably watch if I was bouncing between the contests. Of course your thoughts can (and will) be different.
  3. Some of these bands will be competing in the Houston BOA and some in the Lone Star Preview contest on the 12th (plus maybe others that I haven't looked at). We'll start to get a read on a larger cross-section with those contests.
  4. I suppose that if someone peeked at a not quite peaked show, she might be a bit piqued. Anyway, what little I do know is that there are going to be some unexpected things with this show. Green is so yesterday!

  6. Sure. Feel free to reach out and I'll help as best I can.
  7. It is a shame the cold front isn't expected to come through until Monday afternoon. That means the Houston Regional will be hot with air that you can just about wring the moisture out with your hands. The area to watch in the Caribbean is still there, and has creeped up from a 10% to a 20% chance of developing over the next 5 days. Still should have no impact on Saturday, other than sending moisture our way.
  8. Did you see both the finals and prelims runs? The angle from the stands on the finals run was a little better and that run in general was a little better than prelims.
  9. While I certainly don't know the status, I did go back to last year, and they were using metronomes at football games at various points at least through the 4th game of the season. I really thought that is what I recalled, but had to make sure. Also, if you notice, they aren't starting with the opener at the last couple football games. As to props, from comments elsewhere it appears some of them at the least are ready (and maybe all). They won't use them if there is a chance of rain at all during a football game. My assumption is that they are practicing with either the props or appropriate placeholders to be used to them during the show.
  10. I think Klein Cain may possibly do well too. They had a show that grew pretty well last year. Haven't seen anything about any of the Klein schools this year.
  11. Don't know much about US Bands, so I went digging to find info. November 2, 2019 Attending bands: Aldine Pasadena Bridgeland Magnolia West Lumberton Seven Lakes Grand Oaks Kempner Dickinson Tomball Memorial Klein Ridge Point Channelview La Porte Clear Lake Klein Collins Humble Klein Cain

  13. I watched a prelims and finals video of Clear Brook. My opinion is they make finals here unless something bad happens during their prelims run. While videos can be deceptive (crow may be on my menu), I really think they were clearly ahead of the pack behind them with where their show was on Saturday. But BOA is a different thing and judging system....
  14. Pretty much. I also find it interesting to see how much scores increase for bands that attended Austin a week prior. So Pflugerville, Cypress Woods, and Westwood will be interesting to compare week to week. The last couple years it has taken around a 79 to make finals, so Westwood was right at that last week, and with improvements should make that cut. Cypress Woods needs 9 points, and Pflugerville needs 10, and I don't expect to see that level of increase, but it could happen I suppose. My best guess (and boy, is this a guess) right now is something like: Probably the clear top 3: Ronald Reagan The Woodlands (I've not see the show this year, so I have no idea what to expect - I no longer have a student there) Westlake I think a very solid middle 4: Cy-Fair Westwood Seven Lakes Clear Brook Donnybrook for the remaining finals spots: Oak Ridge Pearland Dawson Stephen F Austin Westfield Cypress Falls James E Taylor Brazoswood College Park Cypress Woods Klein Oak Richland Pflugerville and I'm probably missing someone(s)...
  15. There is now an area to watch in the western Caribbean that is going to drift west-northwest over the next 5 days. Currently not expected to develop, and is expected to stay in the southern Gulf of Mexico. Just something to watch.
  16. I guess it depends on the size of the charter? TWHS gets either 737's or A320's that hold about 170-180 people each. There are usually some spots available for parents to purchase seats.
  17. That happened again in 2017 (remember all those pyramids and silver posts on the carts), just earlier in the season. I think the band member that was injured made it back for Grand Nationals. Had nasty bruises but nothing was broken.
  18. That reminded me of this topic: http://www.txbands.com/forums/index.php?/topic/6848-gruesome-and-not-so-gruesome-band-injuries/ edited to add: The one that is really documented is https://www.collegem...uit-performance Don't click through if blood bothers you.
  19. I finally watched the Friendswood videos, and I think that Clear Brook will do really well on Saturday. They have an intense, story driven show that I think should be well received by the BOA judges. It is in the same vein (Ha!) as the vampire show in 2017, but a little bit harder musically and visually (in my opinion). It is called Siren's Fury.
  20. Don't have a kid in band anymore, but TWHS will charter flights.
  21. It is a topic that comes up fairly often, and we all have our opinions. I've had the chance to see it from both sides (as a performer at a relatively poor, rural school in Kentucky, and as a parent with The Woodlands). The Woodlands program makes it clear that they will attend Grand Nationals every 2 years. This is learned at the first booster meeting for the incoming freshman class. And when you haven't paid attention, and your freshman year also happens to be an Indy year - yikes! Band fees are around $2k (and increasing, of course) for Indy years at TWHS. Roughly half that on the off years.
  22. Did not major in music. Went on to get a degree in Physics, with a minor in Mathematics. Didn't have time to do college band, but I rather wish that I would have done so at least for 1 year.
  23. Sure. Wasn't making a case of a finals appearance for them in Houston but toward the general polish statement in vacon3`'s post. Cypress Woods was ahead of all but the finalists plus Round Rock and Hendrickson of the SA and Austin area bands was my point, and Cypress Woods is not considered a first or even second tier band in the Houston area. Was that because they are taking a step forward this year to move up to second tier status?
  24. Perhaps, but Cypress Woods is not considered by most to be a contender for finals at this regional, but ended up 13th at Austin. Are they having a break-out type year? Perhaps. We'll know Saturday.
  25. Having money allows a program to focus on getting stuff done. They don't have to worry as much about how to afford to get stuff done. Money alone is not sufficient to have success, but it certainly does act as a good lubricant to turn the wheels a little easier. I would also point out that median rather than average is probably a better statistic. Some places may have enclaves of senior corporate executives or old money areas that can really skew averages.
