It appears that my former band kid will also be joining me in San Antonio this year. He has a Saturday class, but is arranging with his instructor a way to miss that one. We'll be driving over Thursday night.

Texas Marching Classic 2019
TWHSParent replied to FaultLineBlues's topic in Past Contests, Events, and Festivals Archive
First, I ran some numbers from Prelims, since we do have a recap, to make sure that everything calculated correctly. I then took the HornRank numbers for finals (sub captions are in BOA format, but averages are in TMC format) and ran the sub-caption calculations in reverse, then checked that the totals matched what we know from the finals announcements. Everything checked out, so I saw no reason not to proceed under the assumption that HornRank had info we don't on finals. -
Just do a search for "Texas Marching Classic", and there is a trove of videos to choose from...

They had some director issues, and ended up 20th in 2017 when we last went. Last year they recovered quite a bit and finished 7th.

It tightens up slightly, but just by a tenth or two: Finals Ronald Reagan Finals MPI MPE Avg VPI VPE Avg MGE VGE Avg Sum Total Score TMC 27.75 26.85 27.3 26.85 26.4 26.625 35.8 36.8 36.3 N/A 90.225 BOA 18.5 17.9 18.2 17.9 17.6 17.75 35.8 18.4 N/A 54.2 90.15 Vandegrift Finals MPI MPE Avg VPI VPE Avg MGE VGE Avg Sum Total Score TMC 27.00 26.325 26.6625 26.55 25.05 25.8 35.2 36.0 35.6 N/A 88.0625 BOA 18.0 17.55 17.775 17.7 16.7 17.2 35.2 18.0 N/A 53.2 88.175 Leander Finals MPI MPE Avg VPI VPE Avg MGE VGE Avg Sum Total Score TMC 26.55 26.4 26.475 26.7 22.8 24.75 34.5 35.4 34.95 N/A 86.175 BOA 17.7 17.6 17.65 17.8 15.2 16.5 34.5 17.7 N/A 52.2 86.35 -

So as an exercise, I renormalized Reagan's scores from TMC to BOA: Prelims TMC: 89.275 BOA: 89.95 Finals TMC: 90.225 BOA: 90.15 Why did the score increase in prelims, but drop in finals? MGE. There is only 1 judge at TMC, and with the weighting BOA places on that caption the fact they went from a prelims score of 36.6 to 35.8 in finals made that much difference in the BOA weighted scores. My numbers Prelims MPI MPE Avg VPI VPE Avg MGE VGE Avg Sum Total Score TMC 25.95 27.6 26.775 25.2 27.0 26.1 36.6 36.2 36.4 N/A 89.275 BOA 17.3 18.4 17.85 16.8 18.0 17.4 36.6 18.1 N/A 54.6 89.95 Finals MPI MPE Avg VPI VPE Avg MGE VGE Avg Sum Total Score TMC 27.75 26.85 27.3 26.85 26.4 26.625 35.8 36.8 36.3 N/A 90.225 BOA 18.5 17.9 18.2 17.9 17.6 17.75 35.8 18.4 N/A 54.2 90.15 Anyway, just another academic exercise. And yes, they will have strong competition at SA. Just a little over 2 weeks away. -
I am not offended in the least. I love debating - it keeps the mental faculties sharp, and makes one consider words more carefully. A respectful debate is pretty much always welcome with me. I'm an old, cantankerous, crotchety, get-off-my lawn type that really appreciates intelligent discourse. I'm not always right, or is that, I thought I was wrong once, but I was mistaken? Now, I will respond to your last comment about bias, as that is a double edged sword, which I believe you know full well. What I would suggest is that you make clear your bias (your screen name does some of that - but are you from Indiana living in North Carolina, or vice versa?), and there will be much more respect on that front. We are all able to account for bias, and we have no problem with someone who thinks a reputation is being impugned and stepping in to attempt to rectify the situation. I think in this case it was a false alarm, but I can understand the position from which you are speaking. Speaking for myself, don't go completely silent - we all need to be jarred from our thought patterns from time to time, and outside opinions can do just that.

Why not take it there? Seems that some humans like to run possibilities through our heads, and we gain some enjoyment, or at least distraction, from it. So yes, many people would consider it fun. They could also consider it educational to spend the time reviewing the shows and learning what each band did, and how the judging panels reacted and then extrapolating from that. Was the intent to tarnish someone's shine? Well, I suppose you read it that way. If you consider the larger string of comments and really consider the context, perhaps you will come up with a different take on the intent. Or perhaps not - that is an exercise left up to the reader.

I believe I was quite clear when I used terms like "purely academic", "could/would", "didn't attend", etc. Your point was implicit in my comment (some may say it was actually explicit). To your other point about not making such comments, I will respectfully disagree. I am not hating on Carmel or any other band, just pointing out some facts regarding attendees and opinions regarding shows. Heck, I could say the same about TWHS in 2013 - I've heard the rumblings that if BA attended that year they would have won. This is not unique to Carmel 2016, and is part of the fun - imagining what-if scenarios. Edited to clarify a point in the 4th sentence.

2019 BOA San Antonio
TWHSParent replied to CTJBandPops's topic in Past Contests, Events, and Festivals Archive
Many bands would have been happy to just meet the goal, but I thought Porter went out during finals and took a step forward over the prelims performance. That is exactly what you have to do - so keep it going through the rest of the season, and always make your most recent performance your best! -
There is another disturbance that is forecast to enter the GoM this week. Currently has a 50% chance of development. Also currently forecast to stay east of the Texas coast due to a cold front pushing it away later this week.

I think many people develop narcolepsy when they read rulebooks. But you are so very right - it is very informative!

I was impressed by what Porter put on the field. I thought you guys were really clean and had a really good show. I think you caught some people by surprise by making finals, and finishing 6th overall. That was an outstanding accomplishment! -
Nothing wrong with your eyeball test. But sometimes we see what we want to see instead of what is really going on. That's why it is instructive to do what you did - take a look at what finished ahead. The challenge with bands from other places is that they have a different approach. Texas really focuses on music, while other areas focus on visual and show production. Both ways are different approaches with the same goal. That's why Grand Nationals can be so interesting (and frustrating) - the different approaches all the bands take. Sometimes those of us here in Texas also need to get out more too, not just our friends in the midwest. Something about variety and spices......

Lone Star Preview
TWHSParent replied to TWHSParent's topic in Past Contests, Events, and Festivals Archive
Perhaps, but LSP is judged by straight up BOA rules, not UIL. Different years, different judging panels. I try to dig a little into the judges backgrounds, and the panel that was here has a very strong DCI and BOA background. -
They aren't a notch above the rest of the country. What they do have is a very high level of consistency, they attend every year, and set a very high competitive floor that is required to be exceeded in order to win GN. We've all seen Avon not win, and most of us have seen Carmel not win, too. Carmel has had a run of shows that have melded with the right performers to make shows that win GN. 3 in a row is not unprecedented. While it is purely academic, most/many of the people we trust with informed opinions have stated that BA, FM, and TWHS in 2016 could/would have beaten Carmel. None of them attended GN that year. So it is really a combination of having a great show, and who the attendees are that may have shows that can beat yours. So, just go out and do your best with the material you have. That is all the performers can do. The directors have to take the feedback they receive and adjust the show accordingly. That is why I think it is beneficial to have either a full or nearly full show for some of these early contests - the judges can give really pointed informed opinions about what they see for the whole thing.

I can find them in the system, but there is some odd stuff mixed in that I don't have the right to make public. While I may have edit rights, I wouldn't want to touch historical data. I can state that the scores were much higher last year. I think it was a week later too which would explain some of the difference. Maybe the wayback machine or other internet archive has the 2018 info stored somewhere? -
That's right. Maybe I was thinking of James Madison from VA?

I understand what you are trying to say. Maybe if bands like Rosemount and Lafayette decide to attend it will be a stronger field for making finals.

Just in case anyone is wondering why Montgomery has a "0" for auxiliary - they are a military style band with no guard. Hence they had nothing to score, and the system doesn't recognize N/A. -

If they do that, then I would expect finals will mirror GN - 12 rather than 14.
