UIL is dictated and controlled by the directors - they vote routinely on the scoring process - your issues should be addressed there -

the only people that can change the scoring process are the directors - that is where the conversation needs to be had - at the end of the day, we are all sitting on the outside looking in and our opinion means nothing - so t is a matter of accepting the status quo or moving on......... -

i think it is time to move on - great points by TWHS Parent - but for every winner there is a loser and at the end of the day -while we all have opinions, none of us have been hired as judges - so let;s move on and accept what it is. have a great day - -

Danpod - here is your commercial break it is 1 am - you just left a marching band competition - you are stressed or elated - but more than anything - you are hungry - But fortunately you are in Texas and there is a WhataBurger somewhere close by - so open that app and find you a whataburger or some breakfast on a bun - relax - take a breath - and enjoy your food cause marching band in Texas is like the weather - wait a few hours and it will change #whataband -
I am hoping for 6 or more of the bigger 6A programs myself - time will tell

every band can find a judge that "kept them out" be it BOA, UIL and or any other competition that is subjectively judged. as a parent that has seen scores that I did not understand or agree with because of a wide swing, at the end of the day - it is a subjective scoring process and will remain as such - time to move on -
I can assure you that most of the directors of the big or growing programs in Texas were at GN this past weekend - just like every NFL coach is at the Super Bowl - even if they are not playing - it is part of the job.

I think that at this point we can assume that TWHS will return as it has been their history to go in non-state years for the past decade as for those that you have listed as confirmed, likely and rumored to attend. it has been my understanding that this is the time of year that the programs start to assess what they are willing to do pertains to the finances. some of these programs do not yet have a show decided for next year. I would assume that we will see in the coming months who will go and who will forgo the Nationals. I hope that we see a very large TeamTexas in Indy next year.

lets stop for a minute and review a few things that have been discussed on these posts in the past as well as conversations I have had and consider it as part of the overall conversation. There are some known dynamics that play into the overall visual or Marching response for a band program - these are factors that play into both UIL and BOA competitions. What is the most common uniform color??? - it is black - if you watched both the BOA and UIL events in the past week you will see that Black is the most common color and if you are not familiar with a particular program - you cannot tell many of them apart - WHY - against a green turf, Black hides the dirt - white stands out and will accent the marching transitions or lack their of. Headgear - we have seen a number of programs that went without headgear/hats as it accents the body movement or lack of such and can impact the visual score or in the case of UIL - the marching/maneuvering scores Plumes - in addition to headgear - the plume highlights the body movements - a plume that stands out in white or a bright color can have an impact. Some of you may have noticed that there were a number of programs that changed plumes, eliminated plumes, or even eliminated head wear between BOA and UIL this past week Leg Sashes - like everything else that defines the body movement - this could be an issue - in UIL more so than BOA IMO every director understands the visual impact that they put on the field and it is on them to address it accordingly just my thoughts -

i think we are getting hung up in the weeds - there are many things that may play into the judges interpretation of the marching. there are 5 judges in UIL and at the end of the day, it is what it is. we can all agree that their needs to be a change in the UIL judging process - but I think that stating that a specific judge had a vendetta against Round Rock is a bit out there and does no one any good - I would assume that the kids have all moved on and that we should do the same. -
Grand Nationals 2018???
CTJBandPops replied to bingogooberman's topic in Past Contests, Events, and Festivals Archive
great point - I have always been a fan of their program - but that makes the point. while Marion deserves praise for making finals for 34 consecutive years (no easy feat in and of itself) - they had the chance to compete in 34 consecutive Grand Nationals - and their are not many, if any, programs outside the Indy area that have that ability we can call it grand nationals all day long but this is not an earned right to perform and based on the cost it is prohibitive to many outstanding programs. Over the past 28 years - TWHS has performed 10 times between 1998 and 2017 - making finals all but once and winning gold in 2013 - More than any Texas program in that time LD Bell appeared 9 times between 2001 and 2013 with a stretch from 2005 and 2010 where they won a medal every year including a Gold in 2007 (1 Gold, 3 Silver and 2 Bronze) I see this as a reason that why we need to see the G Nats move around to ensure that the Grand National Champion is not decided by who is the closest to Indy and can go every year, but more about who has the best show. we sent emails to help TWHS attend Conroe Finals - will we do the same to get support for a Grand Nats that offers a slightly more fair playing field for those that reside outside of Indy just my thoughts -
Grand Nationals 2018???
CTJBandPops replied to bingogooberman's topic in Past Contests, Events, and Festivals Archive
I would agree and have been saying so for the past few years. While G Nats is the bigger stage and is recognized as the grand daddy of them all. Every year that we see programs that miss finals in SA but make finals in Indy. it goes to show that the field is much stronger top to bottom in San Antonio. Yes, you have the big hitters in Indy like Carmel, Avon, BA and Tarpon to name a few. but compare that to the finals in SA and it's underwhelming. I would love to see more of those top bands make the trip to San Antonio, but as it has been stated earlier, that there is no upside for them to do so - as we saw Avon come here last year and finished 4th - when was the last time that Avon finished 4th in a BOA event? there have been many conversations on these posts about programs that are perceived to have more money than others and can afford more props, equipment, instruction, etc. Factor into that a program that is based in Indy (Carmel/Avon) and has no significant travel cost to be in GNats every year - compared to a Texas program that has to spend $300K or more for a trip to GNats and as they have to commit years in advance, they have to hope that is the year that their show clicks with the judges. in some ways, the same could be said for BOA SA - I am sure that programs from other parts of Texas (DFW/El Paso/Valley) that come for BOA SA and UIL state have to absorb some significant costs to remain here for 4-5 days gives an advantage to SA and Austin programs. looking back to 2013 - TWHS was the last BOA SA winner to go to Indy the week after winning in the dome and they brought home the eagle. Since then we have seen Flo Mo and CTJ win the past 5 BOA SA events and none of those shows ended in Indy - and I would have to say that at the very least, they would have taken a medal - if not the gold. it will be interesting to see how many Texas bands will make the trek to Indy next year, but I venture that it will be less than we all currently think - Props to Prosper for representing Team Texas this year. -

i heard a funny story about that - wont share the details here other than to say that had nothing to do with the alamodome - it was more to do with an organization based in Indy -

I post this as someone that has been in the doghouse on more than 1 occasion over the past many years that I have been on TX Bands. we all get there - lets just talk about it and how we can avoid it. so, here are the rules. - here is how you address that post that Piss*s you off YOU SEE A POST THAT YOU LITERALLY CAN'T BELIEVE THEY COULD SEE THAT WAY, LET ALONE ACTUALLY SAY THAT START TYPING, ELOQUENTLY ATTEMPTING TO TELL THEM WHY THEY ARE SO ABSOLUTELY FULL OF SH*T AND WHY YOUR THOUGHTS ON WHY YOUR BAND OR OPINION IS BETTER SIT BACK AND READ IT TO MAKE SURE IT REALLY GETS YOUR POINT ACROSS SO THAT IT WILL ACTUALLY SINK IN AND ULTIMATELY CHANGE THEIR MIND. REALIZE THAT THERE'S NO WAY YOU'RE GOING TO EVER CHANGE THEIR MIND SHORT OF A BRAIN TRANSPLANT HIT BACKSPACE UNTIL ALL YOUR TYPING IS DELETED MOVE ON as an active member that is routinely in the doghouse, I offer this up, but do not recommend it - this is a forum for discussion. but I ask that you support your option with something more than "I do not like your opinion because that is my band" - lets be some what academic. show me some facts or trends - not just your personal feelings.- don't get butt hurt - it is a discussion so lets bring it on
