This site looks great on the computer! There are some minor bugs on the mobile version though, such as the site taking extraordinarily long times to load and Poster's names not showing above each post as each post runs into the other, as well as the heading of the site being cluttered and hard to use as different features are covered up. Also, I miss the ability to see the leader board that shows top posters in terms of number of total posts. IIRC I was almost top ten and I just wanted to check in on that. The leaderboard on this site is a tad more confusing and less helpful.

Thank you and sorry for all of the nitpicking, just trying to help you make the transition smoother and the website run better!

Thank you - this is really helpful! It was definitely intentional to make these changes in the slow period of the site so I can uncover some of the inevitable bugs. I spent a lot of time on the rest of the site outside the forums, but our forums are actually a commercially available software package (invision board) to which we made minimal modifications.

    • Are you noticing the slowness on the whole site or is this specific to the forums?
    • I will go back and revert some of the design updates I made to the forums and see if I can get the display bugs fixed.
    • Does the post above from @TWHSParent answer the leaderboard question? I never really looked at that section so I'm not sure what may still be missing.
  2. In a sense, the directory section of the website is somewhat of a relic of a different era of the website. When I built the website back in 2005, that and the forums were the first thing I created. Sure it was cool to go and see your school in the directory, but are people looking up things besides that? The site has shifted from the forums being super active with a lot user-generated content to a focus on the live blog almost exclusively.

It has admittedly gotten harder to "moderate" the directory as well. Back in the day, I created it wiki-style, where any registered user could go in and add schools, make updates, etc. Eventually though, I got sick of merging duplicates (we would have "Clear Creek", "Clear Creek High School", and "Clear Creek H.S." all with separate entries, for example) so we moved to the current method with the "tell us what needs to change" button and a free text field. While this has definitely helped with invalid entries, it makes it a lot harder for the moderator to update anything because you have to cross reference a bunch of user submissions and also have the database open - a lot of work for someone. If there is value in it, we could definitely look at going back to the original update method.

More importantly though, there may be a lot of

gained from really breaking down the directory into just a combination of data from other places on TxBands.com. Already the contest results section of each school's card is just an overlay of data from "Scores" - could the predictions game feed all it's data into scores? Probably! Any suggestions on how we can make these pieces of the site more sustainable and valuable are always welcome.
  3. Sorry for the delay in response to your question, JTApex!

Predictions is designed to support events with up to 14 finalists (i.e. a BOA Super Regional). When the analysis is calculated we take every participating band in the list and look at how people are predicting them. Every time a band appears in 1st place on a prediction list they receive 14 points. Second place gets 13 points. Third place, 12 points, etc. Those points are summed per band and each school is ranked.

Probably not super scientific. We're always open to tweaking anything if someone out there has a better suggestion on how to analyze the data.

  4. Marching season always creeps up on me! I added all the BOA Texas events for prediction: http://www.txbands.com/predict/

State can't go live until we have area contest winners, and area predictions can't go up until the results from regional contests are finalized, so that will be later.

If there are additional, non BOA events that you'd like added, please feel free to post them here, or you can add them yourself at the following link:

    http://www.txbands.com/predict/public_addevent.php

Keep in mind, some events don't lend themselves to the way TxBands predictions work such as events where there are multiple divisions and classes, rather than a standard 1 through 10 ranking.
