It's just like college football rankings. Alabama beats Georgia beats Texas A&M beats Alabama. So who is top dog? It's all nonsense at some level. Like, there is no meaningful distinction between bands ranked in the same tiers. Clearly a 2021 Hebron is superior to a band scoring 2's at region UIL level, but Hebron is not clearly superior to Flower Mound, and Cinco Ranch is not clearly superior to Langham Creek, nor are the Blue Devils clearly superior to Phantom Regiment. Within tiers, rankings become almost entirely subjective. It's actually worse than college football--at least in college football, you have concrete results you can point to. Victories, points scored, yards run or passed. We are judging and scoring art, which is really kind of ludicrous. Speaking of which, I've had an idea for a show for some time that points to the absurdity of the entire system. Take a "top" band like Flomo and have them do an "evolution" of the life span of a championship band. Their first part is full of missed notes, flubbed set assignments--all very obvious, all pointing to the first years of a school's life. Each part gets progressively better. The second-to-last part is Flomo in all its perfection and glory. And then the last part is diminished again, the inevitable cycle whereby every champion band eventually dies and reverts to being solidly mediocre - at best. Who's got the guts to do that show?5 points -

Basing predictions for this contest on previous results seems rather futile because you can point to any combination of previous results to justify which 5 groups go to state. EX: -Cy fair won BOA north houston over bridgeland so they should be above them -Cy woods beat Cinco and JET at boa north houston so they should be above them -7L beat Cy woods who beat cy fair at boa south houston and jordan beat 7L at KMF so Jordan should be above all of them -JET was behind Jordan, 7L, Cinco at KMF so they'll be behind them just about any of these results you can pull up a contradicting result from somewhere else to discredit5 points -

Ok but what do you want the alternative to be lol? Area makeup dates have always been weekdays for many many years. I feel for the parents and boosters who can’t take off but also…what’s the alternative? Bands have KNOWN the makeup dates for years now since they’re usually the Monday after barring a few exceptions in a few areas. Bands have KNOWN this was a possibility. This isn’t some last minute decision. Through all of the 2010s this has been a contingency and widely used as the worst imaginable case scenario. Is it a good system? No! But what ELSE is left? Genuinely nothing…..at least be thankful UIL is trying to hold a fair contest instead of resorting to a system that doesn’t incorporate student performance. If BDs are complaining about it being indoor and it’s too rainy for students to safely compete on Saturday….then what’s left? They can’t move it to next Saturday because bands across the state already have paid for, budgeted and have planned competitions for that date already. You can’t ask every band in the state with a postponement to just forgo a planned competition because of UIL. Sorry I’m just a little lost on what we’re complaining about here and I’m trying to figure out in earnest and honestly what you think the better solution is here.4 points

For all I know, Cy Woods will come in first 😁 but I'm predicting based on the most recent videos I've seen. Success in marching is strongly tied to show design. Even highly capable groups will struggle with a poor design. Cy Woods' design this year doesn't appeal to me as much as past years. You could say the same about Bridgeland's show design this year, but it has elements that can set it apart. Jordan has a great show, 7L has a great show. Cinco, maybe it's wishful thinking - we'll see.3 points -

Ok, Here is my attempt at a unbiased prediction. 1st- Bridgeland- Winning obv I don't know why you would think otherwise. Clean, hard book, and dam. 2nd- Cy-woods- Havn't seen them in a min, but they are normally really clean and sound good. Could go lower. 3rd- 7L- Good but I personally don't think it was as good as last year. I think its going to be clean and good I could see them higher. 4th - Jordan- Best show I have seen from them, Made 8th at BOA San Marcos, won KMF, and won GCMC beating clear brook. They have to be a bit cleaner visually but I think they have it in them. 5th- Cinco - Not as clean as some but they fit in nicely here 6th- Cy-fair- A bit to much park and bark for me and rarely do they march. I think they are going to get killed by a visual judge. (might be a hot take) 7th - Tomkins - They are good and I love what they do I just don't see them in the picture as much as I do other bands. Please prove me wrong like in 2022 when y'all got 3rd. 8th - JET - in my thoughts they are really clean visually but there music isn't clean (last I saw them) nor is it hard. 9th- Langham- I like where there going and will be looking to seeing them in finals. 10th- Cy- springs I honestly think 8-10th could go anyway but I like what springs is doing and think they fit in nice. first out- katy- I'm just not a fan. IDK why, ii just don't see them making finals. These are just my thoughts don't hate me. Any performer should NOT pay attention to these. Placements don't matter at the end of the day. What matters is that you go out there and leave everything on the field. You do the best that you can do and prove me wrong.3 points -

After watching multiple bands of our area (specifically some of which would be in state contention) Lumberton does have a block rotation which has looked pretty clean and has drill which looks way better than their last shows. I wouldn’t put them out as proved last year when many people did. They were 4th in prelims last year before dropping to 6th in finals. I think them and bridge city will be the 4th and 5th spots. 1. Sulphur Springs 2. Celina 3. North Lamar 4. BC/Lumberton/Farmersville 5. Likewise 6. Likewise I just think these bands stand out among other bands. So many bands in our area deserve a spot in the Alamodome, but that’s the way it is. I’d say if Sulphur can perform like they did in prelims last year (being 1st), they could beat Celina again this year. Celina is the one to beat, and if they did get second, like I predict, it would be a pretty big deal, but if they won, it wouldn’t be big news. North Lamar took a very slow approach (having only around 1-2 minutes on at their first game and finishing their show late). It is clean, which is why I have them up here, but I could see them dropping anywhere in the top 6. Bridge City had a breakout season last year, jumping to 3rd at the area (maybe the highest they’ve ever placed, don’t quote me). They look very clean and sound good musically, could even make a run at the state finals. Farmersville show doesn’t do it for me, I think it’s so greatly performed by the students, but if the soprano player has an off day, it could be a very sloppy rep. (Don’t get me wrong, he’s a great player and I hope the best for him, but even the greatest can crack under pressure, but I hope he doesn’t.) Lastly, Lumberton, I think, is my dark horse this season. I think they have some of the hardest music in the state for the entire band (not just the soloist, as that would go to Farmersville). The soloists are very solid all around. Despite the most recent regional performance, their tuba soloist had a tiny bit of trouble finding the tempo, but their tone and abilities are very solid. The students play into the character very well, and if this isn’t the show that brings them further than ever, I don’t know what will. But that’s just my takeaways. Best of luck to all the bands this weekend or Monday. I’d also like to know everyone else’s opinions on Lumberton, as I talked a good bit about it!3 points -

Every effort will be made to complete both Prelims and Finals (if applicable), but marching band is an outdoor activity, and dangerous weather cannot be ignored. Light precipitation alone won’t cause a delay or cancellation of a performance. However, lightning, heavy rain, or high winds could cause a contest to be postponed or rescheduled. The priorities will be as follows: PRIORITY ONE is student and audience safety. Weather and lighting will be electronically monitored, and in case of danger, the Contest Director will evacuate the field and stands. It is possible the delay could be 30 minutes or longer. The event will not continue until conditions are safe. The decision of the Contest Director is final. PRIORITY TWO is to complete Prelims competition. In case of weather delay, every effort will be made to allow all bands to perform in Prelims on the scheduled contest day. In the event there is mist or drizzle, but no lightning detected in the area, bands will be asked to perform. A weather delay may be announced if it can be determined (with some certainty) that the precipitation will move out of the area in a timely manner. If a director chooses not to have his/her band perform under these conditions, there will be no re-scheduling, and that group will forfeit the opportunity to perform. If weather is too severe to complete Prelims, the alternate contest date will be used. The posted schedule will be followed as closely as possible. PRIORITY THREE is to complete Finals competition. However, according to the UIL C&CR, under extenuating circumstances such as severe weather that prevents completion of Finals performances, the Contest Director may declare Prelim results to be the final contest and certification to the State Marching Contest. Final decisions concerning delays, cancellations, and rescheduling will be made by the Executive Secretary in consultation with the UIL State Director of Music.3 points -

The current entries can be found here: https://www.wgi.org/currententries/cg-current-entries/ So far, only those going to Dayton have been allowed to register. The contests should fill up in the coming weeks. It's exciting to see Warren Central from Indianapolis making a trip down to San Antonio. They seem to enjoy attending a new out-of-state regional each year. Texas will be lucky to have them! Update: Dayton has really filled up. Only IW and SO have a few spots left. It's going to be a very competitive World Championships. Current Texas entries for Dayton: Independent A: Allure Independent, DTX Independent, RGV Winter Guard, Redemption Guard, and Seven Lakes Independent Open: Industry Independent, NOVA Independent Winterguard, ORIGINS Open, and Undaunted. Also true. The point still holds if you're comparing just the music and vis captions and weighting them more similarly to UIL sheets.
