Boa is a great experience for all schools regardless of size. Obviously more beneficial for larger schools but getting to perform in front of large crowds is more fun for the students, especially if they win their class, and they are still receiving great adjudication

In the past, KMF has advanced 14 bands to Finals.

Maybe. I’m more of a mid/small school band fan. There’s a few bands I follow in 5A but it was because I got to know them in 4a and below.

I wish I can watch big schools too but for me there is too much going on at times and some of the schools go from end zone to end zone and I end up missing stuff. The smaller schools is more my style. I do try and see some big schools but for me sometimes less is more.

LET'S GO JORDAN GOT A GOOD TIME! (i don't wanna wake up at the butt crack of dawn.... and 2nd to last is good i guess)

I got the privilege to make it to Rock Hill and Walnut Grove high school’s parent showcase and I’m very impressed to say the least. Rock Hill and their show was a big step up creative wise from past years and it finally feels like they’re stepping away from crowd pleasers and heading towards more competitive shows like they had in 2022. Also enjoying their visual aspects which I feel like struggled last year. I also really like their trombone parts (I’m slightly biased). Walnut Grove in the same way surprised me. To be frank they haven’t been the best since their opening in comparison to other PISD schools but watching the content in their first two parts was really entertaining and challenging. It feels like they’ve finally created a show that represents their program. On top of that a parent over there was talking about how they had 3 ensembles qualify for music for all’s convention in Indy. So I’ll be curious to see how that’ll transfer from concert band to marching! Lastly, I think if performed to the best of their ability both of these schools could make a deep impact into finals!

I bet that was hard for them. I remember a lot of people thinking that this contest was showing that they were going to be dominant again. Lots of folks were thinking them and Farmersville were going to take out NL. I’d like to see Canton reclaim there place as the powerhouse of 4A.

Exactly, most shows especially State shows are maybe 50-75% done by the time the Melissa contest kicks of. The week of the Melissa contest is when most bands start the competition season and then for the next 3-4 weeks go to other competitions where they add on or tweak what they have before Regionals. I was shocked as well about Canton not making it to State but with the previous realignment it made 4A Area C a gauntlet to try and make it out of there to State. I got a feeling a couple of schools are going to move up to 5A next year or quite possibly 1-2 or 2 schools get moved to Area B.

Honestly really fun to predict DCI this year. Can’t wait to do predictions for BOA, and maybe this time I won’t stop forgetting to submit my predictions and be the first one out. 😂

Lol definetly. I'm hoping they keep the full band retreat in play. It would suck if the rain from last year made it go away for good.

I remember this contest last year. It’s so early and most of the shows are unpolished. Most schools only had maybe half their shows or a little more on the field and only a handful of visuals. While I think the contest is useful for determining some early placements, there’s still a lot of time for changes to occur. For example, Canton made the 4a exhibition last year but didn’t make it out of area for the first time in a few DECADES, which I know was a heartbreak for those kids and directors.
