[Major Event] UIL State Contest
bluebellbrass07 replied to Xenon's topic in Past Contests, Events, and Festivals Archive
Everyone watch as I state an opinion without being a jerk to anyone. Its really not that hard to do, I promise L.D. Bell's show, to me, came off as far more physically demanding than Marcus's. Like, I wouldn't even put it in the same ball park. And to say "Bell marched slow easy tempos" is absurd. If they aren't in the ballad they are usually pushing 180-190. Thats about the speed most drum corps march at on average, with bits of 200+ thrown in there. I thought the music was much more challenging to not only in terms of playability, but in the sense that they had a much wider variety of music to execute. They had everything from a soft slow chorale at the beginning, to crazy technical licks, to incredibly loud in your face brass moments, to full out moments at the end of their show. Marcus's music to me always comes off to be as kind of "one-dimensional", but very well performed none the less. And on a side note, it seemed that the only consistencies in judging were with Marcus and Hebron. So its obvious that the panel of judges at least decided on a clear winner -

Its not about winning! Its about putting out a product that you can enjoy performing and hopefully the crowd can enjoy watching, and the process it took to get there. I enjoy both "modern" shows and the old school blow your face off march crazy drill shows equally. Don't get so caught up in a number! -

STOP posting attacks on individual people and bands. Its tactless, annoying, and its going to get deleted -

In other words, the directors didn't want to confuse the audience with a crazy story-line or some deeply intellectual concept. So they instead chose to design a show full of high intensity drill and high intensity music because its just plain fun to watch. See Bell 2000-03 Totally respectable and I definitely enjoyed watching the show. It was a nice change of pace -

I don't think props are really that distracting. You just....don't look at them. Is it really that hard? You'd think with props just sitting there and 200 + kids running around on a field the kids marching would seem to stand out more -

If your going to argue, can you at least keep it civil and not come up with mundane attacks such as "you're dumb" thanks -

Equally as offensive! And you can have your 10 bucks in the form of me calling him out the next time I see him -

All in favor of revamping the UIL judging system? Here's one thing we can be thankful for. At least we have a vast number of quality music programs in the state of Texas. Even the programs at the bottom of the state contest placement wise are far better than some of the bands here in colorado. -

From what I hear the judging for Marcus was the only consistent thing. I hear they got a 1 1 2 2 2 The rest of the placements just dont make any sense at all. Its going to be very very interesting when they release the actual finals recaps. 10 bucks says it was gordon henderson that put bell in 10th... -

Apparently the scores for Bell were as follows: 3 2 10 5 1 Anyone see a problem with this? And congrats to Marcus on the win. -

One of the kids told me the directors said they did the best they could have. So, best performance of the year I'm guessing. -

Off topic: If you want to discuss politics, please..please, PLEASE start a new thread. Theres an off topic forum for that. I really don't want to hear about it anymore Apparently Marcus did "really really really really well" if anyone was wondering. Not the best review but hey, its better than nothing I suppose -

Oh please, I was making a joke. Calm down.... Lets try not to get into politics here, we've got enough of that going on as it is! Back to marching band! Any predictions for top three tonight? -

Correct. They wanted to enjoy the shows And did it not send a confirmation message to your phone when you signed up? Your phone won't get a text everytime the blog is updated, only for results of a contest -

Word from alex, there likely is not going to be a review after each band. There will be live updates and text alerts when they announce the final placements. I'm sure someone will post a review in the next few days. Until then, go watch the presidential election or something! Or if your like me you are so sick of the election already you could just hang around here and continue to talk about band, haha -

Word from the members is that is was much more emotional than prelims and the directors told them that it was the best that they could have done. What more can you ask for really -

I think we went on like 3rd when we won in 2004? Don't quote me on that because I really don't remember, but I remember it being somewhat early. I'm hoping they set the bar high, looks like they are going to have to. Though based off their performances this weekend I don't think they'll have to much of a problem with that. -
Hey guyysss
bluebellbrass07 replied to Fortisimo's topic in Drill Writers, Arrangers, and Composers Corner
Awesome, East West has some great samples, not to familiar with their orchestra stuff but from the sounds of it its definitely high quality. The arranger for the Blue Stars, Frank sullivan, was telling me how he uses the Vienna philharmonic instruments for stuff in cubase. Apparently the sample library is like a TB. I can't even imagine where I would even start with all of that... I just use all the sounds that came with Reason, there's a pretty heft variety and the sounds are way above average. Haven't really had the need for anything else yet. Just started toying around with logic too
